Zhong Kui's Diary
I recovered a bit of strength with Fatty and got up from the ground, finding a chair to sit down. Yurou Lin paid us no mind and walked into a room by herself. After a while, sounds of pots and pans came from inside. Fatty clicked his tongue twice and said, “Ghost Brother, with Linzi being so beautiful, how do you think her cooking skills are?”
“Should be pretty good.”
“Not necessarily. Life is fair; since Linzi has such a beautiful appearance, she definitely wouldn’t have equally beautiful cooking skills. How about we make a bet? I bet Linzi’s cooking is average.”
“What’s the wager?”
“The loser has to bark like a dog during dinner.”
“Alright, I bet her cooking is excellent.”
……
More than half an hour later, Fatty started barking, “Woof Woof Woof.”
After the meal, I had regained most of my strength. I stood up and moved my limbs a bit, then smiled at Linzi, saying, “Linzi, you’re not from Black Wind Village, right?”
Linzi looked at me calmly and replied, “I’m just their guest doctor.”
“So you’re not from the Black Guk Tribe either?”
“Correct, I am not.”
“Then how can you speak Guk Language fluently?” I asked in surprise.
“Does being fluent in Yardie mean one is Japanese?” Fatty interjected dismissively.
That makes sense, I thought as I scratched my head and said, “Linzi, why do people from the Black Guk Tribe have the surname Fang? Isn’t Fang a Han surname?”
“The original name of the Guk Tribe was not only difficult to pronounce but also very similar in sound, which was quite inconvenient. However, because the four major branches of the Guk Tribe didn’t get along with each other and wanted to change it but lacked the means to do so, several hundred years ago, a great hero emerged from the Guk Tribe. After unifying the four major branches—black, white, red, and flower—he began reforms. The first thing he did was to change their names to Han surnames. Although decades later the great hero passed away and the four major branches split again, the practice of using Han names continued.” Linzi explained eloquently.
"Is that so? Since you are not Dark Gukren, why don't you come down the mountain? Just this Recovery Pill alone, if sold, could fetch a lot of money. Why do you want to stay in Black Wind Village? Fang Xiang treats you this way, so I assume your usual status isn't that high either. I'm not bragging; as long as you're willing, I can introduce you to a few jobs that definitely offer better treatment."
I'm not exaggerating. Through Lou Wei's connections, introducing Linzi to someone close to Number One would guarantee her a position as a personal physician, given her medical skills. With that identity, living well wouldn't be difficult. Even if she didn't become a personal physician, opening a clinic in Star City would be far better than being at the mercy of others in Black Wind Village.
"This has its reasons," Linzi replied with a calm smile.
"What reasons?"
"You don't need to know for now." Linzi glanced at me, causing Fatty to chuckle.
"Uh, by the way, how much do you know about Fang Zhan?" I asked casually, but that was the core issue behind my earlier questions.
"What do you want with him?" Linzi countered.
I was taken aback; I certainly couldn't tell her we suspected Fang Zhan was the Dark Overlord. But without a good excuse, I struggled to find one and cleared my throat, hoping Fatty would cover for me.
As expected, Fatty jumped in: "We're both reporters from the Star City Television The Most Dazzling Ethnic Style program. We heard that Teacher Fang Zhan is well-versed in various arts at Star City University, and we wanted to do a special interview with him. Of course, many people are skilled in arts, but why seek him out? Because he is from the Guk Tribe, and our program is called The Most Dazzling Ethnic Style."
Damn, where did this guy learn such tricks? He sounded convincing enough that even I started to believe it.
"Is that so?" Linzi smiled lightly. "Your television station has great benefits; they even give you a Rocket Launcher when you go out."
"You are our savior, so it's fine to tell you the truth. We used to be reporters stationed in Tokyo but left in frustration because we couldn't stand the heat there," Fatty said mysteriously while lowering his voice.
"What does that have to do with being stationed in Tokyo?" Linzi frowned slightly.
"You wouldn't know this, but nine out of ten foreign correspondents are actually spies," Fatty claimed confidently. "Otherwise, do you think our Spatial Bag just appeared out of nowhere? As new-generation agents, the Spatial Bag is standard equipment."
I nearly burst out laughing. When Linzi cast a suspicious glance at my face, I quickly put on a serious expression and said, "These weapons are merely for self-defense; the situation is too dangerous right now, and we had no choice but to use them."
Linzi nodded and pondered for a moment. "Since you're interviewing Fang Zhan, why not do it directly at the school or notify him in advance by phone?"
No wonder some people say that one lie requires ten more lies to cover it up; this statement is absolutely true. Faced with Linzi's questioning, I really wanted to reveal the truth of the matter, but fortunately, there was Fatty. He chuckled and said, "We received this mission just two hours ago. By the time we learned about Fang Zhan, he had already gone home to visit family. As for why we came here, it's because filming the local customs and culture will make the program more enriching."
I quickly added, "Of course, we are just gathering information. We will take a few shots with our phones first, and the actual filming will be done later during post-production."
Linzi pondered for a long time before saying, "Fang Zhan is Chief Fang Boda's son from Black Wind Village."
"Fang Boda? Haha, the Chief is named Fang Boda, the second village leader is Fang Zhongda, and I suppose the third village leader is Uncle Fang Da and the fourth is Fang Jida?" I casually remarked. The terms for elder brothers and younger brothers are just ancient ways to distinguish age.
"Black Wind Village only has two village leaders," Linzi replied calmly.
"Since Fang Zhan is the eldest son, why isn't he staying at home? Instead, he’s out wandering around," Fatty joked. "He wouldn't be out meeting a lover, would he?"
Linzi shot a glance at Fatty: "Fang Zhan is my fiancé."
"What?" Both Fatty and I couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
"I stayed in Black Wind Village to marry Fang Zhan," Linzi said lightly, as if discussing someone else's affairs.
"But... but..." Fatty stammered. "Doesn't this Fang Xiang know you are Fang Zhan's fiancée? How can he treat you like this?"
"I am Fang Zhan's fiancée; however, my agreement with the Chief is not known to others, not even to Fang Zhan himself. Fang Zhan returned this time because his father called him back to get married. But after he came back, he hurriedly went to Wild Boar Mountain Peak for something and will return later; I don't know what he needs to do." Linzi smiled calmly.
He is the Dark Demon King Chaos; he must be going to break through at Wild Boar Mountain Peak! I felt extremely frustrated but couldn't show it. I forced a laugh and said, "Our time is tight as well. How about this: Fatty, you rest here with Linzi while I go look for Fang Zhan at Wild Boar Mountain?"
Given Fatty's current condition, aside from being able to stand up to relieve himself, even doing a set of calisthenics would be difficult for him; he could only agree reluctantly.
To my surprise, Linzi insisted on joining me in searching for Fang Zhan. I immediately wanted to refuse. How could that work? Am I supposed to fight his fiancé in front of her?
But then I thought about it; she was worried about her fiancé, which was reasonable. Besides, she was a master of curses and could summon one or two giants without fear of ordinary poisonous insects or fierce beasts. Moreover, this was her territory; what reason did I have to refuse her?
I could only pretend to be pleasantly surprised and agree: "With you by my side looking out for me, it feels like I've bought insurance; I don’t even need to look at the traffic lights when crossing the street."
Linzi also arranged a room for us to sleep in. Exhausted, I slept until dawn.
When I woke up again, it was already nine-thirty in the morning. After having breakfast and bidding farewell to Fatty, Linzi seemed to be worried that I would be concerned. She somehow managed to bring three giants, making a total of four giants guarding the entrance, before we left Black Wind Village.
It felt a bit cold outside. I wanted to pull out a jacket from the Mustard Seed Pendant but realized that I hadn’t brought one this time, which made me quite frustrated. I took out Yun Zhihan's jade pendant and found a jacket to wear. Linzi glanced at the pendant and asked, "Is this your Spatial Bag?"
"Yes," I replied with a smile, casually stuffing the pendant into the pocket of my jacket.
After crossing the stone bridge adorned with red flowers and green grass, I casually asked, "Linzi, is the only defense for Black Wind Village at the Copper Door? If someone breaks through the Copper Door, wouldn’t Black Wind Village be left defenseless?"
"Black Wind Village is certainly not as calm as it appears on the surface; it is filled with traps inside. For instance, just like the stone bridge we just crossed, if the Engine is activated, countless poisoned arrows will rain down," Linzi said with a faint bitter smile. "However, even if there are traps and poisoned arrows, what does it matter? If it were the era of cold weapons, Black Wind Village would indeed be impregnable. But in today's world, just one special forces team could easily destroy the Copper Door with a few shots from a Rocket Launcher."
I fell silent. Indeed, in this modern age of firearms, such fortifications have lost their original significance. Even if Black Wind Village were surrounded by deep chasms, what difference would it make? A few anti-aircraft guns could bombard you; how could you withstand that? Even without anti-aircraft guns, dropping in a special forces team could sweep through Black Wind Village effortlessly.
"Sending Fang Zhan and Fang Xiang out to study was actually an attempt to change the current situation. Unfortunately, Fang Xiang's ambitions are too great while Fang Zhan is too dull. I estimate that there will be some turmoil in Black Wind Village soon," Linzi said with an undertone of concern.
The two of us continued forward along the edge and came to a cliff. Looking around, this cliff was about a hundred meters high and completely smooth; there was no path for anyone to walk on or even any place to climb. I asked Linzi in surprise, "Is there really no other way? How do we get up this kind of cliff?"
