Zhong Kui's Diary
Damn, this Ten Directions Bald Donkey is truly inhumane. His words are like a butcher with a face full of fat grinning at a pig, saying, "Eat well, eat more, and when the New Year comes, I'll stab you to death."
Is there anything more heartless and outrageous than this?
I snorted coldly, "Even if I have to pull out my gun and end it all, I won't do as you wish!"
The Ten Directions Monk smiled strangely, "You won't end it all because you have too many things you can't let go of. As long as there's a glimmer of hope, you won't give up. For example, Fatty from Black Wind Village..." Before he could finish, he suddenly looked surprised at something behind me.
Instinctively, I turned around and saw Linzi lying unconscious on the ground. Other than that, there was nothing unusual. Realizing I had fallen for the Ten Directions Monk's trick again, I turned back angrily and said, "Hey, is this funny to you?"
The Ten Directions Monk didn't respond; he just looked at me with a strange smile.
"What the hell do you mean?" I shouted loudly.
The Ten Directions Monk remained motionless, his bizarre smile still on his face.
Unable to contain my anger, I stepped forward and shoved him. To my surprise, with that push, the Ten Directions Monk transformed into a burst of red smoke. Instinctively, I took a big step back and assumed a defensive stance.
The smoke swirled in the air and quickly formed a line of red characters—Reincarnation begins. Defeat the Lion Knight Guardian to pass this level.
Reincarnation has started? What is this Lion Knight Guardian? How am I supposed to find this Lion Knight Guardian? And how can I defeat it?
As for the Ten Directions Monk suddenly turning into smoke, I wasn't too surprised. It was clear that while I turned around, he had already left behind an illusion to prompt me.
Damn it, this bastard didn't even give me a hint. Playing tricks like this is infuriating; if I could beat him, I would have killed him by now.
While feeling depressed, doubts began to arise in my heart. Just now, the Ten Directions Monk seemed to know me very well, even mentioning Fatty's name. How did he know about Fatty?
After thinking for a while and finding no answers, the red smoke text in the air had already dissipated, as if nothing had happened. If it weren't for the hole I had blasted in the wall of the wooden house with my shotgun, I would have thought I was dreaming. I approached and shook Linzi awake, telling her what had just happened. Linzi's face turned as pale as snow as she murmured, "Are we going to continue the Reincarnation?"
I comforted her, saying, "This time's Reincarnation is similar to a game upgrade Pass; we won't turn into other characters anymore."
Only then did Linzi take a deep breath, give a bitter smile, and stand up.
I also stood up and looked around. "I wonder where the Lion Knight Guardian is?"
Linzi stretched her limbs and frowned. "Hmm, strange. My injuries seem to have healed."
Reciting a spell, Linzi summoned three giants, directing them to dismantle several thick logs from the roof of the wooden house to use as weapons. Once prepared, Linzi called for me to come down the mountain.
"Should I call you Yu Qi or Yurou Lin?" I asked with a smile as I followed behind.
"Call me whatever you like; just Linzi is fine. After all, that's the name I used when I met you. After hundreds of Reincarnations, names have lost all meaning for me," Linzi smiled.
"Oh, Linzi, where are we going?" I asked curiously.
"We can't just wait here. Let's go down the mountain and ask someone; maybe we'll find out what's going on with the Lion Knight Guardian," Linzi said with another bright smile. Having shed her strong facade, she no longer appeared as indifferent as before; her expressions began to come alive.
"Is it possible that this era is filled with monsters?" I joked casually. "That old Stupid Donkey wants me to upgrade Devouring Energy; isn't upgrading all about fighting monsters?"
"If that's the case," Linzi said with a smile while looking at me, "then from now on, no matter what monsters appear, you'll be the one to face them. After all, it's your ability that needs enhancing, not mine."
"No problem."
...
The two of us were just joking around, but unexpectedly, as soon as we reached the foot of the mountain, we really encountered a monster.
The monster didn't look very scary; it resembled an egg with six thin tentacles underneath. At the top of the shell was an eye that protruded like a glass ball, and the eyeball was spinning around, looking quite comical. I could probably crush several of these monsters with a single kick.
"Zhong Zhengnan!" one of the 'eggs' shouted loudly. "If I call your name, will you dare to respond?"
Oh, it can talk and knows my name? I exchanged glances with Linzi, surprised yet somewhat amused.
Clearing my throat, I replied, "What if I dare to respond?"
"Since you dare to respond, then I won't call you anymore. Hahaha, do you think I'm a bit crazy? Sorry, my cultural level isn't high. If I've offended you in any way, feel free to come and hit me." The 'egg' let out a series of chuckles.
I couldn't be bothered to chat any longer and stepped forward to kick this 'egg.' I expected it to dodge or resist, but surprisingly, it stood still and let out an exceptionally shrill cry: "Ah, I'm going to die! I'm finally going to die! Brothers, I'm going ahead..."
Amidst the 'egg's' noisy cries, I stomped it underfoot. It felt like stepping on a SpongeBob—soft and quite elastic. I tried to stomp harder to crush the 'egg,' but no matter how much force I applied, the strange cries continued from beneath my foot: "Ah... I'm going to die... Ah, I'm going to die... Ah... Oh... Uh... Ah oh uh yi mu yue, bo po mo fo de te le..."
After stomping for a while, I lifted my foot and saw that the 'egg' had instantly returned to its original state, its eye on top looking at me in surprise: "Huh? Why am I not dead yet? Hey, Zhong Zhengnan, why haven't you killed me?"
"Damn it, do you think I don't want to? I'm still wondering why you're not dead!" I was extremely frustrated.
"Did you use Devouring Energy?" the 'egg' asked suspiciously.
"No!"
"Damn it! According to the rules, you have to use Devouring Energy to kill us. Otherwise, how are you supposed to increase your Devouring Energy's Experience Points?" The 'egg' seemed even more frustrated than I was. "I'm a famous Exploding Bug from Hanlu Plain; there's no way you can kill me without using some Devouring Energy!"
"Day!" I stepped on the Exploding Bug again, this time using Devouring Energy. Sure enough, a crisp 'pop' sounded beneath my foot, just like the moment you pop those bubble wrap sheets.
Lifting my foot to take a look, I saw that the Exploding Bug had turned into a shattered eggshell. In the center of the shell, a row of Red Smoke Numbers rose—100/00 (1).
The smoky text quickly dissipated, and then dozens of Exploding Bugs began to shout.
"Step on me, step on me, please step on! Please step on!"
"Step on me, step on me, I'm big; you'll feel more accomplished after you pop me!"
"Fire at me, fire at me; my homeland is proud of me!"
"…"
Feeling frustrated, I walked forward and channeled Devouring Energy into my foot. With a series of pops, I crushed each Exploding Bug. Every time I popped one, a burst of red smoke numbers would appear: 0/()… 100/()… 00/()… 00/()… /600()… Until I finally crushed the last Exploding Bug, floating above were the red numbers—1/10 (5).
Having played Online Game, I naturally understood what these numbers meant. The number after the slash indicates the Experience Points needed for leveling up, while the number before the slash represents current Experience Points. The number in parentheses indicates the Level.
For example, 00/() means that the current Level is level X and requires 00 Experience Points to level up; /600() indicates that the current Level is level Y and requires 600 Experience Points to reach level 4. From the numbers, it was clear that each time I crushed an Exploding Bug, I gained 100 Experience Points. According to my current value of 1/10 (5), to level up to level 6, I would need 10 Experience Points, meaning I'd have to crush about ten more Exploding Bugs.
Damn, this really is a monster-hunting and leveling-up setup, but I didn't feel any change in my body’s Devouring Energy. Perhaps it was due to my low Level.
After crushing these Exploding Bugs, the two of us continued forward. Ahead lay a forest. Just as we reached the edge of the woods, about twenty Zombies emerged from within. These Zombies looked slightly different from those I'd seen on TV; their arms were severed at the elbows, where dark iron claws were attached. As they moved, their claws clashed together with a clanging sound.
"The king sent me to patrol the mountains…" sang the leading Ironclaw Zombie in a strange tone, while those behind it clapped along with a rhythmic beat.
I exchanged glances with Linzi and Noodles. Were these monsters here to fight or just to entertain?
Singing a few lines, the Ironclaw Zombie raised his hand, the iron claw shining brightly in the sunlight. "Zhong Zhengnan, you don't take the path in the hall, yet you enter hell without a door. Do you have any last words to say?"
"I have no last words, but I do have a question," I replied with a smile.
"Go ahead."
"Where is the Lion Knight Guardian? And how many levels do I need to reach to qualify for a duel with it?"
Seeing my inquiry, the Ironclaw Zombie quickly lowered his iron claw and kindly explained to me. "The Lion Knight Guardian is in Fogwind Valley. To enter Fogwind Valley, you need to use the Devouring Energy within you to shatter the Amethyst at the valley's entrance. You should be at least level fifty."
"Level fifty? Damn, how much experience is that?"
"Let me think... Level one requires 100 Experience Points to level up, and level forty-nine requires 18,000,000 Experience Points," the Ironclaw Zombie shook his head in disbelief. "Honestly, I also think the experience required for leveling up is a bit excessive; I can only express my sympathy for you."
"Damn it, an Exploding Bug only gives 100 experience. How many Exploding Bugs do I need to kill?" I was extremely frustrated.
