"Master Xu, you truly are a remarkable person," Jiang Jingsheng said as he stepped forward, admiration evident on his face.
"Just a trivial skill, nothing to boast about," Master Xu replied lightly, raising his chin slightly, embodying the demeanor of a reclusive sage.
"Master Xu, I invited you here today not just for my mother's birthday celebration, but to showcase your extraordinary abilities to everyone. Moreover, there is also a distinguished person present today," Jiang Guangming said with a smile, deliberately emphasizing the words "distinguished person."
"Is that so? I have lived in seclusion for many years and have not engaged with the world. If I can meet a distinguished person during my visit to Qingcheng, that would be wonderful. It would be a good opportunity to exchange insights and test the results of my years of seclusion," Master Xu replied with a smile.
"Where is this distinguished person? Come out and meet me," Master Xu said, scanning the crowd with his gaze and speaking loudly.
"Master Xu, that person is the distinguished one," Jiang Guangming pointed at Jiang Chen and proclaimed loudly. "You mean that young man?" Master Xu looked at Jiang Chen, his tone darkening with displeasure, thinking that Jiang Guangming was mocking him.
"Master Xu, please do not underestimate him; he is quite impressive. Just look at how he treats you," Jiang Guangming said with a laugh, further stirring the pot. At this moment, Jiang Chen appeared very calm, seemingly indifferent to Master Xu's demeanor. He didn't even bother to look at them.
Upon hearing Jiang Guangming's words, Master Xu was slightly taken aback and scrutinized Jiang Chen again. Jiang Chen sat at the table with his back turned to him, remaining composed. Yet Jiang Chen remained seated without moving, casually grabbing some sunflower seeds and continuing to crack them open as if no one else were present.
Jiang Chen's calmness appeared to Master Xu as blatant disrespect.
Master Xu's expression darkened immediately, becoming ominously severe.
"I am speaking to you; did you not hear me?" Master Xu spoke again, his tone clearly laced with anger.
"If you have something to say, just say it," Jiang Chen turned slightly to face Master Xu again and smiled lightly.
"What kind of attitude is this? Do you really think of yourself as a distinguished person?" Master Xu said coldly, his gaze sharp as he fixed it on Jiang Chen.
"In your presence, I naturally am a distinguished person. Considering you are here today to celebrate my grandmother's birthday, I won't hold it against you; just find a seat and don't make things difficult for yourself," Jiang Chen replied calmly.
Jiang Guangming couldn't help but feel delighted upon hearing this! He hadn't expected Jiang Chen to be so arrogant! The more he acted this way, the more it would infuriate Master Xu—this was exactly the effect Jiang Guangming wanted to achieve.
Master Xu's face turned pale with rage; if Jiang Chen were closer to his age and disregarded him, it would be understandable. But Jiang Chen was merely in his early twenties yet displayed such arrogance—this was intolerable for Master Xu.
"Youth, you are too arrogant; you have no idea who you are speaking to right now. Not even your master would dare speak to me like this," Master Xu retorted angrily.
Jiang Chen found it amusing; it seemed that this Master Xu wouldn't shed tears until he faced real consequences.
"Today is my grandmother's birthday; I do not wish to harm you. You should sit down quietly; if you keep talking back like this, it won't end well for you," Jiang Chen said with a smile.
Jiang Chen offered this advice kindly, but Master Xu was completely unwilling to listen.
"Do you really think you can hurt me? Ha, that's utterly ridiculous. No matter how talented you are, in my eyes, you are nothing. Today, I will show you what the Mystical Arts of the Xuanmen truly are," Master Xu said in a deep voice, then took out a piece of yellow talisman paper from his body.
Master Xu quickly folded it and soon formed a small figure, only three inches tall, holding a Paper Knife in its hand. He cut his finger, squeezed out a drop of blood, and placed it on the forehead of the Paper Man. Then he chanted a strange incantation, and the Paper Man stood upright in Master Xu's palm before lightly jumping down to the ground, moving like an agile little figure as it waved the Paper Knife.
The onlookers were all curious. "This Paper Man is interesting, but surely Master Xu isn't planning to use it against a real person? I could crush this Paper Man with a single step," someone joked.
Although the Paper Man was fascinating, it was still just a paper figure with negligible attack power, and everyone regarded it as a toy.
Master Xu snorted coldly, "You mere mortals dare to underestimate my Paper Man? Open your eyes and watch closely." He settled into a firm stance, hands forming seals, his expression solemn. As he exerted his power, white mist began to rise above his head.
"Slash!" With a flick of his finger, the Paper Man suddenly raised the Paper Knife and struck it down onto the marble floor.
The spectators couldn't help but laugh; after all, even if the Paper Knife struck fruit, it probably wouldn't cause much damage. Just as they were chuckling, there was a loud "bang," and the Paper Knife actually cleaved a notch into the marble floor as if an axe had struck it hard.
Now everyone was left speechless, terrified at the unexpected power of a mere Paper Knife. Master Xu continued to control the Paper Man, which leapt high and swung down at a Solid Wood Chair, splitting it cleanly in two.
"Who said my Paper Man could be crushed with a single step? Come and try if you dare," Master Xu proclaimed proudly.
The onlookers turned pale and retreated repeatedly. What had once seemed amusing and even cute about the Paper Man now instilled fear and dread, making them hesitant to approach.
After causing some destruction with the Paper Man, Master Xu turned to Jiang Chen with a smirk that didn't reach his eyes. "Young man, do you now understand my strength? Don't even think about fighting me; you can't handle my Paper Man."
"Do you take me for a three-year-old child? Using this trick to provoke me is laughable," Jiang Chen replied, feeling exasperated. Master Xu's folding paper skills were indeed impressive for someone from Xuanmen, but using such tricks against him was simply absurd.
"In my eyes, you're no different from a three-year-old. By the time I became famous, you probably hadn't even been born yet," Master Xu scoffed.
Jiang Chen shook his head slightly in disbelief and flicked a sunflower seed lightly; it shot toward the Paper Man like a bullet.
