It was not easy to break through, and what was even more surprising was that the Yin Ghost Clan and the Giant Clan had shown no signs of pursuing them at all.
"Phew, I didn't expect that this time the Initiative Strike would fall into their trap. I said, it's been quite a while since the Yin Ghost Clan suffered a big loss from us, and they haven't made a move," Wang Long said. After hearing the sequence of events from him, Jiang Xue and the others felt that his speculation was likely true; they just didn't know how the enemy had discovered their whereabouts without them noticing.
"Enemy attack!" Just as they breathed a sigh of relief, Wang Long and the others heard a warning sound coming from behind the Army.
"Don't worry, those are our people." Seeing two figures flash in mid-air, Wang Long guessed their identities. "Ha, I was wondering why the Yin Ghost Clan and the Giant Clan were so kind as to give up such a great opportunity to pursue us. It turns out you two have stabbed them in the back again."
"We've worked so hard to divert their attention and disrupt their formation for you, and yet it sounds like you're not saying anything nice. What do you mean by stabbing them in the back? Can't you phrase it in a more positive way?" Princess Liling said unhappily upon hearing Wang Long's words.
"Hehe, what's wrong with you, Princess Liling?"
"He’s probably jealous seeing how anxious you are about Jiang Xue," Song Shuping bluntly pointed out Princess Liling's feelings without holding back.
"Shunshen!"
"Hahaha, what's going on? The usually calm and composed Princess Liling is getting anxious now. This seems unusual," the heartless elders began to tease about their leader's "personal relationship issues."
"Um um!" Two authoritative coughs immediately interrupted them. "Shunshen, Princess Liling, what’s the situation behind us now?"
"We're not Taiqing Chu," Song Shuping said seriously as he put away his joking demeanor. "We did indeed launch a surprise attack on the rear guard of the Yin Ghost Clan earlier, but with their strength, they shouldn't still be in disarray at this point. Could it be that they set a trap to lure us back in and then ensnare us again?"
Wang Long frowned and asked, "So do you have any thoughts about going back now?"
"No!" the elders shook their heads in unison.
"That's right. We are still within the territory of the Giant Clan, and we never know when a large force might come to attack us. How could we possibly rush back at this moment? Therefore, they are not encountering any trouble; rather, they have voluntarily given up on pursuing us."
"Voluntarily given up?" They found Wang Long's speculation even harder to understand. "There’s no need for that. This is still their territory, and the Yin Ghost Clan has been plotting for so long that they must have thoroughly studied us and know that no reinforcements will come to support us. In this situation, they don't need to take any risks."
"That's right, but that only means they are not afraid of us," Wang Long replied. "In my opinion, perhaps they have more important goals, which is why they gave up on pursuing us."
"How could the Dragon Lord come to such a conclusion? Is there anything more important than striking at our strength right now?"
"Heh heh, who told you their goal must be to strike at us?"
"Isn't it obvious? The Yin Ghost Clan has been keeping an eye on us for a long time, and we just ambushed several of their tribes and killed many of their warriors. Isn't that reason enough for them to chase us down?"
Wang Long waved his hand. "First, you need to understand one thing. The competition for survival among the various races in the divine realm is far more intense than what we've experienced before. During the previous war between gods and demons, they fought fiercely; now, they are resting and recuperating after a millennium without conflict. However, as their power accumulates, it has reached a point where a great battle is needed to determine the future ruler of the divine realm for many years to come. All their goals will revolve around this, especially for a clan like the Yin Ghost Clan. Now look back at our conflict with them. Their greatest enemy should be the divine race; we should not yet be on their radar. Defeating us brings them little benefit and could result in significant losses. As for our recent raid on the Giant Clan, don’t forget that the Yin Ghost Clan has been watching those giant tribes for a long time. If they truly cared about it, why didn’t they stop us earlier?"
"Uh." The others exchanged silent glances, having to admit that what Wang Long said made a lot of sense; at least it was an issue they could not avoid.
"So we have reason to believe that this ambush was merely their 'casual effort.' They have even more terrifying objectives. We must be cautious of their actions in the future; conversely, we currently face no danger and can withdraw calmly."
"Are we really going to retreat now?" Jiang Xue asked thoughtfully.
"Uh~~~?" This rhetorical question gave Wang Long and the others an ominous premonition.
"Have you all forgotten the purpose of our visit to the Giant Clan? We came to take advantage of the Human Emperor's current inability to retaliate, to expand into the Giant Clan, establish a solid foothold, and strengthen our power in preparation for the Human Emperor's counterattack. Have we achieved that goal now?"
"Of course not," Ying Sang sighed. "Although we inflicted significant damage on the Giant Clan this time, our own strength has not only failed to improve but has actually suffered considerable losses due to this ambush. The only gain we have is probably some precious materials obtained by the leader in the Secret Valley and the Suppressing Spirit Sword, but we have no idea how much power they can actually wield."
"So, if we retreat now, it would mean a strategic failure. Although we have gained temporary stability, will we be able to withstand the Human Emperor's counterattack when it comes? More importantly, we don't know how much time the Human Emperor will give us. Even if we wanted to shift our target to deal with the now-hidden Demon Clan, we might not have enough time."
"That's true, but isn't that a bit too risky?" Li Yanchen understood her intentions and couldn't help but smile wryly. "After all, we've just escaped from their grasp. If we charge back in, it would be easy for them to detect us."
"That's why we can't directly lead the Army back in," Jiang Xue seemed to have already thought through everything and said without hesitation. "The Army must first leave the range of the Giant Clan. We will select a few top experts to secretly infiltrate deeper into the Giant Clan. I don't believe they are strong enough to prevent or track our infiltration with such a small number of elite experts."
