Early the next morning, Li Mu was dragged out of bed by Sima Shang. Ever since he caused trouble at Lightwolf Fortress, Sima Shang had been keeping a close eye on him, fearing that he might cause another major incident. If it weren't for Li Xin coming up with a solution last time, he would probably have already been sent to the front lines!
However, there hadn't been any bad news lately, which eased some of the original worries. Moreover, with the Qin Army launching their summer offensive, over fifty thousand brothers would no longer be able to return home. The blame for the death of the general would likely fade into the annals of history.
Thanks to the trust of Old General Lian Po, Li Mu was working overtime to repair the Danhe Defense Line. He knew this was the last line of defense for the Zhao Army, and if it fell, they would have no choice but to become bandits in the Taihang Mountain! Therefore, he couldn't afford to slack off and personally ensured that the quality of construction reached unprecedented heights. During this time, domestic contractors came wanting to get involved in the construction project, but he angrily chased them away one by one. His practical experience had fully demonstrated the robustness of the defensive works he supervised.
It wasn't that Li Mu wanted to be lazy; it was just rare for him to get a little sleep. He had been so tired in recent days! Until last night, he hadn't had a good night's sleep! Rubbing his bleary eyes, he finally realized it was Sima Shang. "Old Four! What's going on? Who died?!"
While battles were raging ahead, you were dreaming like Zhou Gong! You're not the only one who can't rest; I'm sleep-deprived too! Naturally, Sima Shang wasn't in a good mood and snapped, "With such a great enemy before us, can't you say something auspicious?!"
Hearing that he should say something auspicious made Li Mu unable to help but curl his lip. If it weren't for us holding up against domestic pressure, the defensive works built along the river would be nothing but shoddy projects! If that time really came, would anyone even have the luxury to talk about auspiciousness?! Stretching lazily, he then asked, "If no one has died, why did you come here with such bad news?!"
Seeing that this guy was as stubborn as a rock in a latrine, Sima Shang quickly waved his hand to change the subject. "I just heard from the Eighth Patrol Team that there were abnormalities discovered in the river, so I hurried over to find you. Our Old General has entrusted us brothers with the responsibility of the Patrol Team, so we can't afford to doze off at a critical moment!"
Upon hearing there might be enemy activity, Li Mu immediately woke up. He hurriedly dressed and hung his Sword at his waist without even bothering to wash his face and urged, "Let's go! We need to check it out!"
Noticing that he looked disheveled and his Military Uniform was dirty, how could he look like a proper sergeant? Sima Shang quickly grabbed him and reminded him, "When you go out, you represent our Zhao Family Army! Looking like a beggar all day long is unacceptable!"
Li Mu pointed at his heart and smiled, "This is clean inside and better than anything else! If your heart is dirty, what's the point of looking good on the outside?! Let's go! Who said we have a great enemy before us?!"
Anyone who argued with brother number two, Li Mu, never won; thus, Sima Shang could only shake his head helplessly and hurriedly followed him. He actually understood why he often lost arguments with Li Mu: it was because everything he said was about serious matters. With no personal motives involved, it was naturally straightforward and honorable.
The two rushed out of the Main Tent and mounted their horses.
Li Mu suddenly swung his whip and shouted, "Go! Follow this general to the Sentinel team's garrison!"
When a unit of the Zhao Army arrived at the landing point where Luzi and the others disembarked, Li Mu raised his hand to signal the cavalry to stand by. To ensure the accuracy of this location, he ordered the soldiers from the Eighth and Ninth Patrol Teams to accompany him for confirmation. He gestured for the soldiers who had previously stayed here to dismount and recreate the movements from that night.
As all footprints were carefully examined, there were no additional prints on the snow-covered ground.
"Something's not right!?" Li Mu ordered the Patrol Team to return, leaving only his subordinates to secure the area, then he began to inspect the footprints coming from the riverbank. For some reason, he felt that there was something off about these tracks.
At this time, the Qin Army on the opposite bank had ceased their attack, making things much safer compared to yesterday. Not knowing what this inspector Li was looking for while bowing his head, Sima Shang could only wonder if he could disrupt the scene.
The site had already been surveyed, so it was natural for him to come over. Li Mu did not speak but waved his hand.
Sima Shang jumped over following Li Mu's footprints and asked, "If we get another heavy snowfall, the River Surface will probably freeze over. In this cold weather, how could anyone dare to swim across? I think that soldier who urinated must have been seeing things!"
"Don't move!" Li Mu saw Sima Shang standing on one leg and quickly commanded, "I order Sima General to halt!"
Upon hearing this, Sima Shang leaned forward and fixed himself in place on one leg. "What now, you damn sergeants!?"
Sima Shang had been a Centurion for several years, while Li Mu was just recently promoted from being a sergeant! The soldiers standing on patrol couldn't help but chuckle at seeing a junior officer commanding a senior officer. Fortunately, they were used to it and found it amusing.
Seeing only a pair of footprints left behind by Sima Shang, Li Mu suddenly understood why he had felt strange earlier. So that's it! He waved his hand to indicate that everything was fine and turned back towards the riverbank.
It was safe on the shore, but approaching directly from the riverbank posed a danger! The range of Qin State's crossbows could easily cover this distance!
Sima Shang saw Li Mu preparing to jump into the riverbed like an outdoor enthusiast and couldn't help but panic. "Are you crazy? The Qin Army is on the other side!" Before he could finish speaking, Li boldly jumped in. He quickly turned around and shouted, "What are you all standing there for? Hurry up and come provide cover!"
The soldiers waiting on patrol heard the command and realized that the two generals had already jumped into the riverbed. If something happened to the generals, they would all be in trouble! They hardly cared about the situation anymore and hurriedly took off their shields, running toward the riverbank. Just a few steps in, they heard Li Mu's voice from the bushes.
"Get back! Do you want to get Sima killed? He's worried about finding our officer, and if you gather around, you'll expose him!"
"Listen to him!" This was Sima General's voice.
The soldiers were hesitating about whether to heed Li Mu's advice when they received a command from the Centurion and hurriedly returned. The Qin Army on the opposite bank had powerful crossbows, and their shields were merely for show. Jumping into the riverbed was essentially a death wish; it was better to stay away from danger if they didn't have to take risks.
If the snow on the bank could be walked on by following footprints, then the traces on the riverbed could not be completely erased. With drops of water forming beads from clothing and ice footprints appearing, Sima Shang was greatly alarmed.
"General Li! You really found him! It seems these Qin Army crossing the river are all skilled!"
Li Xin nodded heavily, rubbed his chin, and turned to look at the flowing river. "This is all our oversight! We only thought about how the enemy could cross over once but overlooked their cold resistance. If I'm not mistaken, they crossed in two stages!"
