Kevin pushed open the classroom door and walked in. As soon as he entered, the atmosphere in the classroom seemed to split open like an invisible blade, drawing everyone's attention to him. He walked through the classroom to his seat, exuding an undeniable presence.
"Wow, Kevin, you're so cool! Smoking and drinking at school, how dare you be so bold?" a classmate asked excitedly, with almost an admiring look in their eyes.
Kevin touched his nose and responded in a relaxed manner, "Ah, those are just small things. If you're interested, I can take you to experience what real excitement and freedom are next time."
As soon as he finished speaking, the classroom was filled with a chorus of admiration and appreciation, as if everyone was drawn to Kevin's boldness and confidence.
Then, another classmate couldn't help but ask, "Kevin, I heard you were recently called to the instructor's office. What happened?"
Kevin squinted his eyes and said smugly, "Well, you know what kind of person the instructor is, right? He thought he could threaten me and make me bow down. But he was wrong. I'm not easily intimidated. I stood up to him, even threatened back, saying if he dared to do anything to me, I would let the whole school know how incompetent he is."
"Wow, you're so hardcore!" a classmate couldn't help but exclaim, and others echoed with praise and admiration.
Kevin was becoming more and more proud, feeling like a conqueror standing on everyone's heads. He enjoyed the feeling of being admired by everyone, completely unaware that he was actually playing with fire.
However, at that moment, he suddenly noticed Alan sitting in the corner of the classroom, looking at him with a cold expression. Kevin locked eyes with Alan, and in that moment, he suddenly felt a sense of unease, as if Alan's gaze conveyed a warning: arrogance and showing off will only bring you closer to the abyss.
But Kevin chose to ignore that unease, continuing to bask in the halo he had created for himself, completely unaware that this would be his first step towards destruction.
As soon as the school bell rang, the students immediately scattered into several small groups and hurriedly left the classroom as if they had been liberated. Kevin, however, sat leisurely at his desk, engrossed in his own social world with his phone in hand. A smug smile still lingered on his face from the admiration of his classmates just moments ago.
Alan sat nearby, watching Kevin's every move, and finally couldn't help but remind him, "Aren't you supposed to be cleaning up the environment? Remember the teacher's punishment?"
Kevin listened, without looking up, he just waved his hand dismissively and said, "Oh, that? I'll clean it up later."
His fingers continued to dance busily on the phone screen, as if the whole world didn't matter, and only the social interaction on the phone screen was worth his attention.
Alan slightly furrowed his brow, but ultimately just nodded nonchalantly. He knew that Kevin's arrogance and immaturity were not likely to change in the short term.
Just then, Mary walked over and stood beside Alan, asking curiously, "Bookworm, what are you reading today?"
Alan glanced at the book beside him, then looked at Mary with curious eyes and smiled, saying, "This book mainly discusses how to manage and operate code more effectively. It talks about multi-threaded program scheduling, which allows different parts of the code to run simultaneously to improve execution speed."
Mary listened, although she didn't understand any of the professional terms, but the interest and passion revealed in Alan's tone made her feel that this must be very "cool."
"Wow, it seems very high-end!" Mary nodded excitedly, "Can you give me some specific examples or applications?"
Alan smiled and considered for a moment, then said, "Well, for example, in a large-scale network application, there may be millions of users online at the same time. If we use a single thread to handle all the requests, it would be very slow and would waste a lot of computing resources. But if we use multiple threads, we can distribute the requests to multiple processing units, which can greatly improve efficiency."
Mary's eyes became even more bright and focused, as if she was completely captivated by Alan's words. "Wow, it sounds like commanding a huge army!"
Alan couldn't help but laugh, "You can see it that way, except this 'army' is made up of data and code."
"Even though I don't understand a single word, I feel like what you're doing must be amazing!" Mary said with a smile, her smile shining like sunshine, lighting up Alan's usually aloof and cold heart.
Alan looked at Mary's smile and suddenly felt a strange warmth. He knew that this simple exchange in this moment might be more valuable than all the knowledge he had learned from books.
Just as Alan and Mary were immersed in that special resonance, Kevin suddenly broke the spell.
"Okay, okay, stop talking about code and all that stuff. Mary, you're just a fool, you don't understand anything," Kevin said impatiently. He stood up and walked towards an area where cleaning tools and other equipment were stored.
Mary pouted immediately, getting angry: "Kevin, shut up! I like listening to Alan talk about these things. Who needs your comments?"
Kevin responded with a cold laugh: "Like listening? Liking to listen but not understanding is useless. You might as well stay in kindergarten, where you might actually understand the stories."
Mary blushed with anger, "You're just like a primary school kid! Always criticizing others, what makes you so great anyway?"
Alan sat there, watching Kevin and Mary argue back and forth, feeling a bit awkward but understanding that this kind of bickering was not uncommon among this group of friends. Kevin was always arrogant, enjoying using sharp words to judge others, while Mary was emotionally rich and easily hurt.
"Thank you, Mary," Alan sincerely thought to himself, "Sometimes, even the smartest person needs a friend to remind them that life is not just about cold numbers and codes."
