"But—what if she doesn't see you as her real brother?" Zhou Kexin still felt uneasy.
"That's impossible. She and I have grown up together since childhood; our bond is closer than that of relatives. She is my sister, and she would never fall in love with me," Chen Haoxuan replied earnestly.
Zhou Kexin patted her chest and sighed in relief. She thought to herself, "That scared me! So Chen Haoxuan's feelings for Chen Yina are those of a brother for his sister. I thought it was romantic love! Hehe... Now, no one will compete with her for Chen Haoxuan." Zhou Kexin seemed to forget about her good friend Hua Lingwei, who also liked Chen Haoxuan and had a good relationship with him.
Wanting to spend more time with Chen Haoxuan, Zhou Kexin decided to skip class and stayed in the security room with him. Gradually, the security room at New City University became Chen Haoxuan's territory. The security guards discreetly left, and Chen Haoxuan was generous, giving them a pack of Red Double Happiness cigarettes every day and often bringing them snacks.
For a while, Chen Haoxuan hardly attended classes. He spent his days running a business, seemingly intent on extracting money from all the students and faculty at New City University. He had become the owner of a convenience store; whatever you wanted, just let him know, and you would soon get it—clothes, shoes, socks, books, snacks, various daily necessities... even underwear and sanitary pads were available from him.
Chen Haoxuan rented a 300-square-meter warehouse near New City University for over three thousand yuan a month. In just a week, he transformed the warehouse into a beautiful living space. From the outside, it looked like an ordinary warehouse, but inside, it felt like a five-star hotel. The warehouse was spacious; if he had decorated it entirely with high-end items, he wouldn't have been able to afford it. So he used mostly inexpensive materials and second-hand goods, many of which he crafted himself.
Chen Yina loved their current living situation even more because of the small room Chen Haoxuan made for her. Her room was spherical and very cozy, filled with many charming little things.
During this time, something interesting happened: Chen Haoxuan met someone influential at New City University—the student council president Liu Junfeng, who was in his fourth year. The way they met was somewhat amusing; Chen Haoxuan treated the campus like a marketplace for his business. As the student council president, Liu Junfeng felt compelled to manage him. Liu Junfeng was somewhat introverted and not as articulate as Chen Haoxuan; during their conversation, he lost his temper and ended up fighting with Chen Haoxuan.
As they exchanged blows, Chen Haoxuan realized that Liu Junfeng was a hidden expert. Just as they were getting into it, Yang Lin arrived. Yang Lin and Liu Junfeng were close friends—almost like brothers—and he stepped in as a mediator. Thus, Chen Haoxuan became friends with Liu Junfeng.
Having someone powerful like Liu Junfeng at New City University significantly benefited Chen Haoxuan; at least when he conducted business there, other students dared not interfere.
On April 28th, New City University went on break for Labor Day in a few days, giving four days off—two of which were Saturday and Sunday. Students returned home, leaving no one to buy from him. Therefore, Chen Haoxuan and Chen Yina decided to go home as well. He asked Zhang Qing to watch over the warehouse while continuing business casually since not all students had gone home; some remained on campus.
New City wasn't too far from Chen Haoxuan's home; it took two or three hours by car. During the ride, Chen Yina was very excited because she had brought back quite a bit of money! Her father's medical expenses were covered; her brother's tuition fees were taken care of; her family's living expenses were secured—she no longer had to worry.
“Chen Family Village has arrived, everyone please get off the bus!” A rude middle-aged woman selling tickets urged the passengers to disembark.
After getting off, Chen Haoxuan glanced around at the scenery and found the place quite nice. The mountains were lush and the waters clear; there was a river in front of the village and high mountains behind it. If one were to consider feng shui, this was indeed a treasure land.
“Is this really Chen Family Village?” Chen Haoxuan turned to Chen Yina, as this was his first visit to his birthplace since arriving in this century.
“Yes, yes, this is our Chen Family Village. Come on, Brother Xuan, let’s go home,” Chen Yina said happily, taking Chen Haoxuan’s hand and walking briskly into Chen Family Village.
As they approached the village entrance, Chen Yina let go of Chen Haoxuan’s hand, fearing that the villagers might gossip. Under a large Banyan Tree at the village entrance, several elderly people were chatting. When they saw Chen Haoxuan and Chen Yina, they greeted them warmly. “Xuan, Nana, you’re back!”
Once Chen Haoxuan and the others left, the elderly began to gossip: “Do you think Chen Haoxuan is being supported by a rich woman? Look at that suit he’s wearing; it must have cost several hundred!”
“I think so too. If he wasn’t being supported by someone, how could he afford such expensive clothes?” another elder chimed in.
“I noticed that Chen Yina seems to be close with Chen Haoxuan. Just now, I saw them holding hands before they entered the village!”
“Oh, isn’t that our talented young man from Chen Family Village? Wearing a suit too; he wouldn’t be turning into a gigolo, would he?”
“Damn it, a good-for-nothing wearing a suit! He should take a look in the mirror; no matter how fancy his clothes are, he’s still useless. Even in royal robes, he wouldn’t look like a prince!”
Hearing all the gossip along the way made Chen Haoxuan very unhappy. How could the villagers of Chen Family Village look down on him like this? He had a fair complexion and handsome features that might resemble a pretty boy, but he wasn’t involved in any shady business or being supported by a rich woman. The suit he wore cost only a few thousand; surely he could earn that much.
Noticing Chen Haoxuan frowning, Chen Yina realized he was upset. She gently reassured him, “Brother Xuan, don’t pay them any mind. They can’t stand to see others do well. Now that you have money, they’re just jealous and want to bring you down.”
"That's true," Chen Haoxuan sighed.
Chen Yina led Chen Haoxuan to a flat made of yellow mud and stopped. Upon seeing the yellow mud house, the first thought that came to Chen Haoxuan's mind was that this was his home. He wanted to cry; how could he be so poor? However, what he didn't expect was that Chen Yina beside him suddenly ran inside, happily shouting, "Dad, Mom, Brother, I'm back!"
