Wang Long was a big businessman, so he wouldn't pay any attention to someone like Chen Haorong, who had no money, power, or reputation. Therefore, he didn't even want to meet Chen Haorong. Unlike Chen Haoxuan, who had Hua Lingwei to introduce him, Chen Haorong had no such backing. Regardless of the circumstances, he had to give Hua Lingwei some face since her father was a tycoon in New City.
Since Wang Long ignored him, Chen Haorong sought out other partners for collaboration. He already knew whom to approach to compete for Chen Haoxuan's business. He found a merchant who specialized in planting saplings. Although this merchant wasn't as wealthy as Wang Long, at least others were willing to collaborate with him.
The merchant Chen Haorong found wasn't running a large business, so he couldn't purchase various mountain goods in bulk like Chen Haoxuan did. However, he wasn't in a hurry; he wanted to grow his business gradually and was confident that he could replace Chen Haoxuan's current position in a short time.
When Chen Haorong returned to Chen Family Village and heard that Chen Haoxuan had stopped purchasing mountain goods and instead was buying strange stones, he was filled with questions about how much money could be made from stones. However, he thought it was good; the more chaotic Chen Haoxuan became, the happier he felt. That was just the kind of person he was—unable to stand seeing others do well.
Chen Haorong contacted his old friends, those who used to hang out with him before he went out to work and lost touch with them. He asked them to help notify the villagers in Chen Family Village and nearby areas that he was also purchasing various mountain goods just like Chen Haoxuan.
Chen Haorong's plans reached Chen Haoxuan through Li Ping. Upon hearing this news, Chen Haoxuan merely smiled lightly. Most of the sellable items on the mountain had already been collected by him; although not everything was cleared out, it was akin to Chen Haoxuan eating while Chen Haorong only got the leftovers.
With Chen Haoxuan leading the way, Chen Haorong had no choice but to follow his example of paying cash on delivery. Initially, Chen Haorong thought that helping those who planted saplings purchase mountain goods would earn him a lot of money. However, after spending a day collecting mountain goods and delivering them to the sapling merchant he found, he realized that purchasing mountain goods could actually lead to losses.
Chen Haorong acquired some Osmanthus Trees and various attractive plants and mountain goods. Since he couldn't accurately assess how much these items were worth, he ended up losing several thousand in just one day. He had no choice; the sapling merchant explained that this line of work also involved risks and that many things relied on guesswork—experience was crucial.
Thus, Chen Haorong learned his lesson and began purchasing mountain goods at lower prices. After all, since Chen Haoxuan wasn't buying mountain goods anymore and he was the only one doing so within a ten-mile radius, who else would they sell to?
Because Chen Haoxuan purchased at high prices while now Chen Haorong bought at low prices, many villagers were dissatisfied with him and often secretly called him a heartless businessman. Despite their complaints, they still sold their hard-earned mountain goods to Chen Haorong because they had no other option; since Chen Haoxuan stopped buying, they were eager to earn more money and change their lives—even if it meant selling at a loss.
Chen Haoxuan's acquisition of various strange stones went smoothly; every day many villagers brought bags of stones to his home. Many people collected stones for sale, but very few could sell them successfully because Chen Haoxuan only accepted high-quality items. If someone had particularly beautiful stones, they could easily fetch thousands or even tens of thousands—this was what Chen Haoxuan told the villagers.
One day, a little girl brought a fist-sized Water Stone along with a group of children into Chen Haoxuan's home. The other children also held various peculiar stones in their hands. They had heard adults say that collecting beautiful stones could be exchanged for money at Chen Haoxuan's place, so a group of children without pocket money decided to go together to the riverbank to collect stones.
"Brother Xuan, I found a stone, do you want it?" The little girl said anxiously to Chen Haoxuan. Although she knew him, she had never spoken to him before, so the 12-year-old was quite nervous.
"If it's pretty, I promise I'll take it. Show me the stone you found," Chen Haoxuan joked with the unfamiliar little girl in front of him.
"Here." The girl held out the stone with both hands and handed it to Chen Haoxuan.
Chen Haoxuan took the stone from the little girl, and when he looked at it, his eyes lit up. The stone was indeed very nice—round and smooth, with beautiful patterns on its surface that gave it an artistic flair. It was definitely a collectible stone.
"What's your name, little sister?" Chen Haoxuan playfully asked the girl.
"My name is Chen Xiumin. Brother Xuan, can I sell this stone for money?" Chen Xiumin asked sweetly.
"Of course you can! This stone is very beautiful. I really like it, so I want to buy it from you. But you'd better call your family over because I'm worried about giving you so much money without them being here. If you trust me, leave the stone with me for now and go get your family. I'll give them the money, okay?" Chen Haoxuan said jokingly.
"Okay, I'll go get my mom and dad right now!" Chen Xiumin replied happily. After saying that, she bounced out the door, followed by the other children who had come with her.
Before reaching home, Chen Xiumin started shouting, "Dad! Mom! Come out! Brother Xuan said he wants to buy my stone and told me to bring you over for the money!"
Chen Xiumin's dad wasn't home; he had gone to gather mountain goods, but her mom was there. She walked out of the house, somewhat skeptical, and asked, "You’re not lying to me, are you?" She had also picked up stones before but found that none were good enough for Chen Haoxuan. She thought he was just fooling around; there were so many stones, yet he only picked a few. So she stopped picking stones and focused on gardening at home.
"It's true! It's true! If you don't believe me, ask them!" Chen Xiumin pointed at her friends.
"Yes, yes! Auntie, it's true! We all heard it; Brother Xuan really told Xiaomin to go home and get you for the money," her friends chimed in.
Chen Xiumin's mother believed it now. She took her daughter's small hand and, filled with excitement, headed to Chen Haoxuan's house.
Sitting in the living room at home, drinking tea, Chen Haoxuan saw Chen Xiumin, who had just come in after selling stones, accompanied by a woman. Chen Haoxuan smiled and said, "Xiumin, you're here! Is the one holding your hand your mother?"
"Yes, Brother Xuan, this is my mom," Chen Xiumin replied excitedly. Although she was a bit curious as to why Chen Haoxuan didn't recognize her mother and had just asked for her name, she chose not to ask. What she was thinking about now was getting the money from selling the stones.
