"If only he weren't so outstanding, but if he weren't outstanding, how could I possibly have taken a liking to him? Sigh, I must have owed something in my past life," Hua Lingwei thought to herself.
Chen Haoxuan sat up and moved closer to Hua Lingwei. He quietly asked her, "I feel like you've been intentionally avoiding me lately. Why is that?"
"I... I..." Hua Lingwei stammered, unsure of how to respond to Chen Haoxuan's question.
"Come on, let's go talk in the school's back garden," Chen Haoxuan suggested softly. He stood up and headed towards the back garden without greeting Zhou Kexin and the others, clearly not wanting them to know.
Watching Chen Haoxuan's retreating figure, Hua Lingwei kept repeating to herself, "Should I go... or not go? Go..."
In the end, Hua Lingwei couldn't control her feelings for Chen Haoxuan. She didn't even know what she wanted to say to him in the back garden; she just wanted to spend some time alone with him.
Not long after Chen Haoxuan arrived at the back garden, Hua Lingwei showed up. Chen Haoxuan was sitting on a bench and waved at her. Hua Lingwei sat down next to him, leaving a person's width between them.
Chen Haoxuan turned to Hua Lingwei and said, "Tell me, why have you been intentionally avoiding me lately?"
"No... I really haven't been avoiding you on purpose," Hua Lingwei mumbled, her head lowered and her voice barely audible.
"Huh...? What did you just say?" Chen Haoxuan couldn't hear her because her voice was too soft.
Hua Lingwei repeated herself again, "I... I really haven't been avoiding you."
This time Chen Haoxuan heard her and responded, "Then why is it that every time I call you out, you keep your distance? That's not like you; you used to be very clingy."
Hearing Chen Haoxuan's words, Hua Lingwei thought to herself, "You already have a girlfriend now, and two of them at that. How can I still cling to you?" Though she thought this way, she didn't dare say it out loud. Instead, she explained to Chen Haoxuan, "You have a girlfriend now! If I act clingy like before, won't your girlfriend get jealous?"
"If you keep being clingy with me, they'll get used to it over time. Besides, it's not like you're hugging or kissing me or anything intimate," Chen Haoxuan smiled as he said this.
"Hmph, it's easy for you to say that. It's precisely because of this that I've developed feelings over time," Hua Lingwei silently cursed in her heart.
"I really don't want them to misunderstand me!" Hua Lingwei spoke sincerely.
"Don't worry! They won't misunderstand you because they all consider you their best friend," Chen Haoxuan said with a smile.
"Even though you're a very smart guy, no matter how clever you are, you still can't understand a woman's heart, because sometimes women don't even know what they're doing! Just like..." Hua Lingwei quickly covered her mouth with her hand at this point, almost revealing her feelings for Chen Haoxuan. Luckily, she caught herself in time; otherwise, she wouldn't know how to face him in the future.
"Just like what?" Chen Haoxuan pressed.
"Well... oh right, just like Zhou Kexin. She's clearly a very proud person who dreams of finding a perfect prince charming. But after meeting you, she changed; she let go of her wealthy young lady identity and became your mistress. Don't you think a woman's heart is hard to understand?" Hua Lingwei said.
"Now that you mention it, women's hearts really are quite difficult to comprehend," Chen Haoxuan replied with a look of realization.
"Exactly! So I try not to get too close to you; otherwise, it would be bad if Zhou Kexin and the others misunderstood," Hua Lingwei said.
"Then if that's the case, wouldn't it be better if we didn't meet?" Chen Haoxuan said lightly.
Hearing his words, Hua Lingwei felt nervous. She was genuinely worried that Chen Haoxuan would ignore her. She quickly waved her hands to explain, "No, no, no! That's not what I meant. I just think we shouldn't be too intimate; otherwise, Zhou Kexin and the others might misunderstand."
"What are you afraid of? What exactly are you scared of? Do you like me too? Is that why you're worried about Zhou Kexin and the others finding out?" Chen Haoxuan asked seriously.
Hua Lingwei covered her mouth with both hands in surprise, thinking to herself, "Oh no... does he already know that I'm secretly in love with him?"
"Looking at your expression, it can't be true, can it?" Chen Haoxuan questioned.
"No... absolutely not! You're Zhou Kexin's boyfriend; how could I compete with them for a boyfriend?" Hua Lingwei explained while her heart raced nervously.
"If that's the case, then what are you afraid of? If they misunderstand, just explain it to them! There's no need to deliberately avoid me!" Chen Haoxuan said.
"Okay... fine!" Hua Lingwei lowered her head and replied softly.
"That's more like it! Come on..." Chen Haoxuan patted the space beside him, signaling Hua Lingwei to sit down.
Hua Lingwei slowly leaned against Chen Haoxuan as she sat down. Just as she settled in, a middle-aged woman passed by them. When the woman noticed Hua Lingwei and Chen Haoxuan, she paused her hurried steps and smiled kindly at Hua Lingwei, saying, "Vivi, is this your boyfriend? He's really handsome! When did you start dating?"
Hua Lingwei, startled like a frightened rabbit, quickly stood up and waved her hands to explain, "No... Teacher, he... he's not my boyfriend. He is Chen Haoxuan."
"Chen Haoxuan? I've heard of him. They say he's a very smart guy; even teachers can't solve the problems he comes up with. Vivi! Don't lie to the teacher. If he's not your boyfriend, why are you sitting so close to him? Vivi, he's a genius; you should cherish him!" The middle-aged woman said to Hua Lingwei with encouragement.
"Teacher, he really isn't my boyfriend," Hua Lingwei insisted seriously.
"Not? Oh, that's okay! Just work hard to win him over, and then he'll be your boyfriend! Go for it! The teacher supports you," the woman said happily to Hua Lingwei.
"Teacher, you're mistaken. He has a girlfriend. His girlfriend is Chen Yina, so there's no hope for me and him. Please don't misunderstand us," Hua Lingwei explained.
"Then... what about you two?" The middle-aged woman pointed at Chen Haoxuan and then at Hua Lingwei, her expression filled with doubt. She was questioning whether Chen Haoxuan and Hua Lingwei were having an affair.
Hua Lingwei could see what her teacher meant and clarified, "Teacher, Chen Haoxuan and I are good friends, so it's normal for us to sit close."
"Oh, then you two continue chatting. The teacher has things to do, so I'll be leaving now. Bye!" The middle-aged woman said as she walked away, still filled with doubt. She didn't believe Hua Lingwei's words! Can friends sitting together show the kind of sweetness that only couples do?
