"Ah, you scared me!" The villager was startled by the sudden voice.
After calming her racing heart, she turned around to see Wang, dressed in a gray coarse cloth shirt, her hair tied up, and covered in dirt.
Wang approached with a flattering smile, "Sisters, what are you doing? I heard the name of that Dead Girl from Qingxi."
"Oh, it's you! We were just at your place! No, it's not your place anymore; those two came back from town with a lot of stuff!"
"Yes, yes! They even brought a pot. I really don't know where they got the money; it's impressive!"
"At my age, I wouldn't dare to buy so many things at once. Did you give it to them? I heard you're in charge of the household now."
Hearing this, Wang's anger flared up, but with so many people around, she couldn't say much and awkwardly smiled, "That's not true! I don't know where they got the money; they must have stolen it!"
With that, she turned and left, not wanting to engage further.
"Hey? Wang, we're not done yet! Are those kids' purchases real or fake?"
"Of course they're real; otherwise, how could I have chased them away?" Wang said without looking back but still took the opportunity to tarnish their reputation.
She hurried towards the cave, muttering to herself, "Those brats! I've worked hard to raise them, and they dare to take money and leave. They must want to get themselves killed!"
However, Wang was also puzzled; there was no income at home, so it was impossible for them to steal from her!
The more she thought about it, the more engrossed she became and didn't notice someone in front of her until she bumped into them.
"Oh dear, Sister-in-law, what are you doing? Why aren't you watching where you're going? Everyone moved aside for you, and you still bumped into me!" It was the distinctive sharp voice of the Jiang Clan.
"It's Second Sibling! I was lost in thought and didn't see you. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. But Sister-in-law, please watch where you're walking in the future. If you bump into someone else, it could be trouble!" The Jiang Clan rolled her eyes; this Sister-in-law seemed completely unaware of what she was doing.
"Alright then, I won't keep you. You hurry along; I'm going home!" Wang replied.
In a rush to leave and flustered as she went, the Jiang Clan rolled her eyes again and left with her basket.
As soon as Wang arrived home, she pulled Liu Eldest into the cave. "Head of the family, guess what I heard in the Village? I heard..." She then recounted everything about Liu Qingxi buying a lot of things.
"So what?" Liu Eldest responded slowly, not understanding Wang's point.
"Hey? Why are you acting so dense? They just got chased away, and now they bought so many things. Where did the money come from? Isn't it from our family?"
Only then did Liu Eldest realize, "Right! If it's ours, others definitely wouldn't know; they would surely believe us!"
With excitement on his face, Liu Eldest began to imagine, "Then all the things they bought must belong to us!"
Suddenly, his previously excited expression darkened. "Wife, who will go ask them for it? That Qingyan's Brat is a real pain! I can't go!"
Liu Eldest was greedy but feared for his life even more.
"I... I...!" Wang stammered. Thinking of Liu Qingyan covered in red spots was terrifying, but she forced herself to appear calm and puffed out her chest.
"It might not even be a pain; didn't the village chief leave with them?"
"If you want to go, then go. I'm definitely not going!" Liu Eldest shook his arms. He was scared; he wouldn't risk his life for a few items.
Those two Brats couldn't have any real ability; they could only buy a few cheap things, Liu Eldest thought.
Hearing her husband's words made Wang even more frightened. The thought of retrieving Liu Qingxi's items vanished instantly.
"I... I won't go either!" She was scared too; dealing with a pain was not something to take lightly.
What if it was the village chief? What would they do then?
Finally, gritting her teeth, she reluctantly gave up. "Fine, let's forget about those things. Let those two Brats have them; it's their lucky day, hum!"
Meanwhile, Liu Qingxi had just put down the items at home and had no idea about Wang's thoughts.
He also didn't know that Wang had intentions of snatching them back and was completely unaware that they had escaped a disaster due to Liu Eldest's cowardice.
"Yan, put these two inside the house. I'm going to get some water!" Liu Qingxi rubbed her sore shoulders. It may just be one pot and a few pounds of grain, but it felt heavy.
After walking for an hour, her back ached and her legs were tired; it was getting heavier with each step.
"Okay, sister, you rest for a bit!" Liu Qingyan was unusually excited.
He wasn't carrying anything, and his energy was much better than Liu Qingxi's.
"No, I need to get some water first and wash the pot properly. We still have to go up the mountain to look for food later; this little bit of grain won't last long."
Liu Qingxi knew that this pot was being used for the first time and needed a good amount of water to clean it.
After rubbing her sore waist, she stepped outside with two large gourd ladles. These were sent over by Zhang Hongling at the village chief's request since the siblings had nothing to store water in.
Such gourd ladles were not worth much in the countryside; planting a few around the house would suffice.
Not many families had wells here, but there was a large one in the center of the village where those without wells went to fetch water.
Liu Qingxi didn't go to the well because it was too far. There was a river just behind their house, located upstream, with clear water that was perfect for washing things.
After cleaning the bowls and chopsticks and placing the pot on the old stove in the yard, Liu Qingxi clapped her hands: "Finally done!"
With everything set up, it instantly felt like home.
"How is it, Yan? Our home is not bad now!" Liu Qingxi felt a sense of accomplishment.
"Yeah! It's better than before, hehe!" Kid laughed happily.
"Alright, alright, let's take a break. We still have to go out later. If we run around too much now, we won't have any energy!" Liu Qingxi said sternly.
Kid stuck out his tongue and made a funny face: "Got it, sister!"
After returning to the room for a short rest—since they hadn't fully digested the big bowl of noodles they had in town—they only drank some hot water before packing their things and preparing to head up the mountain.
"Rock, we need to repair the house in a couple of days. The roof is completely gone. When we come back later, let's gather some reeds to dry and fix the roof!"
Liu Qingxi walked alongside Liu Qingyan, although Kid couldn't understand a word.
However, Liu Qingyan was one of the few people she could talk to here. After being here for so long, she had communicated the most with Liu Qingyan, while she hardly spoke to anyone else.
After working on the mountain for about two hours, Liu Qingxi noticed that the sun was about to set and packed up her things to head down with Liu Qingyan.
The path down led directly to the south side of the village, passing by a dozen households before reaching their yard.
As soon as they entered the village, Liu Qingxi heard a burst of crying.
"How unlucky can we be? The house was fine, and now it's falling apart! What are we going to do? It costs several taels of silver to tear it down and rebuild it; it's a matter of life and death!" a woman cried.
"Sigh! What can you do? If you don't tear it down, it might collapse and hurt someone!" a man squatted on the ground, shaking his head in despair.
Liu Qingxi slowly approached them. She only caught snippets of their conversation about a house collapsing and felt curious enough to walk over.
But their house wasn't in such dire straits. Thinking this, she spoke up: "Uncle and Aunt, why do you need to tear down your house? Can't you just repair it?"
As soon as she finished speaking, the man and woman suddenly looked up at her with wide eyes filled with hope.
