In the distance, a girl with braided hair walked towards him, warmed by the bright sunlight.
The young girl was focused on the ground and didn’t notice the boy in front of her. As they brushed past each other, the boy quickly caught up and said, “Qingxi, where are you going?”
“Ah? Oh! It’s you! What brings you to Village?” Liu Qingxi had been lost in thought and hadn’t noticed anyone around her.
“I’m looking for Village Chief for something. What about you? I can help!”
“No! That’s not necessary. I’m just going up the mountain! You should rest more since your health isn’t great!” Liu Qingxi expressed her genuine concern.
However, Yang Yichen felt sad upon hearing this because he thought she was dismissing him.
“It’s fine! I’ve been feeling much better lately. Exercising really helps, so let me go with you!” The once confident boy suddenly changed his demeanor.
Liu Qingxi’s big, wet eyes left him defenseless: “Okay, I’ll go up the mountain. Let’s go together!” She thought to herself that she would walk slowly.
This way, Yang Yichen could keep up without getting tired.
Unconsciously, she slowed her pace, and the boy beside her sensed her silent consideration. A fleeting smile appeared on his lips, charming yet brief.
The back mountain wasn’t far away; it took about the time of an incense stick to reach it. However, Liu Qingxi's destination wasn’t at the foot of the mountain: “Yang Yichen, can you climb?”
“I can!” The boy nodded vigorously, suddenly filled with anticipation for this trip.
The usually quiet boy was particularly talkative today: “Qingxi, did you finish repairing Uncle Sanyou’s house? I’m really sorry about what happened before; it wasn’t intentional!”
“It’s fine! We fixed it well; it’s definitely sturdy. When I do something, it has to succeed!” The girl’s confidence quickly infected the boy, making him even more chatty.
"How did you do that? How do you know these things? We’ve never had such methods for repairing houses here!"
"You probably don’t know, but we learned it from an old man while fleeing. I remember it quite well; otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to do it now!"
Liu Qingxi had used this excuse many times and had become accustomed to explaining it without changing her expression.
"Oh, that’s impressive! Will a lot of people come to you in the future?" The boy asked seemingly casually.
"Maybe. I think they will, because this way more people won’t have to rebuild their houses."
"Then Qingxi, you can’t just help them for free! You should set a price. Once the repairs are done, they can pay you, and you and Yan won’t have to worry about making a living!"
"Yang Yichen, you’re thinking along the same lines as me. That’s what I plan to do too, but my reputation isn’t enough right now; many people might not believe me yet!"
Yang Yichen pondered for a moment: "People need time to accept new things. Since you’re sure you can do it, don’t worry. Good wine needs no bush!"
Unknowingly, Yang Yichen and Liu Qingxi had begun to speak more freely, no longer treating her as an ignorant farmer girl; even references Liu Qingxi made were understood.
This surprised him. Why did a farmer girl who couldn’t read know so much? He had gained his knowledge through extensive reading, but why was Liu Qingxi different?
He kept many of his doubts to himself; perhaps everyone had their own secrets. Wasn’t he a perfect example?
Meanwhile, Liu Qingxi was unaware that some things deep down could not be changed. It was difficult for her, an educated modern woman, to pretend to be an illiterate farmer girl.
Fortunately, the villagers were quite simple-minded and wouldn’t ask deep questions. The first person to doubt her was a good friend who wouldn’t reveal her secret.
Unknowingly, they had been climbing for quite a while when Liu Qingxi spotted a marked tree and quickly ran over.
"Qingxi, what are you doing?"
"Yang Yichen, come here!" Liu Qingxi called out excitedly, urgently needing someone to share her joy with.
The boy followed the spot where the girl had stopped and saw a deep trap that had been disturbed, with dry grass scattered around. The girl was kneeling on the ground, her hands digging for something.
"Yang Yichen, look what I found!" The girl raised her hands, revealing a small white animal in front of the boy.
"It's a rabbit! Did you dig this trap?"
"Yes! How about that? I'm pretty amazing, right? Last time we even caught a wild chicken, but we sold it in town. This one we can eat together!" Just thinking about it made her mouth water.
The girl seemed to envision a large bowl of braised rabbit meat, ready to be devoured.
Her inner smile dazzled the boy's eyes.
Under the lush green tree, Liu Qingxi squatted on the ground while the boy stood beside her. A gentle breeze blew, causing two strands of hair to fall across her forehead, accompanied by the fragrance of flowers that lifted one's spirits.
The boy felt a flutter in his heart; on this clear morning, beside this ancient tree, he felt a dark emptiness within him being filled.
"Let's go! There are still several traps ahead. I wonder if we'll find anything else!" Liu Qingxi couldn't help but feel fortunate that her traps were well-hidden among the dense bushes; otherwise, they would have been discovered long ago.
Their luck continued to hold. After their first catch, she had taken the time to dig three more traps, making a total of six. Today they had caught two wild rabbits and one wild chicken.
"Wow! I'm so lucky today!" After days of difficulties, Liu Qingxi's mood had been low, but now she finally felt a sense of release.
For some reason, even though she was in her mid-twenties, her actions and expressions at this moment resembled those of a carefree teenage girl.
"Then I must savor your cooking!" Yang Yichen was infected by her happiness, his smile gradually widening, making his already beautiful face overshadow the surrounding flowers.
Liu Qingxi was momentarily captivated and quickly shook her head. "You're already at the aunt level; how can you be tempted by a child?"
"Alright, alright, let's hurry back. We're having this rabbit for lunch!" Liu Qingxi's backpack was filled to the brim, along with a few mushrooms that had sprouted after the rain, perfect for stewing with meat.
When they returned home, Liu Qingyan had not yet come back.
Since leaving the Liu Family, Kid had become lively and no longer clung to Liu Qingxi all the time; he quickly blended in with other children his age.
He was having so much fun that he didn't want to come back.
Rarely did Yang Yichen manage to keep up without panting heavily. "Not bad! It seems like your health has really improved!"
Liu Qingxi remembered the first time she met Yang Yichen; he looked so frail that it seemed a gust of wind could blow him away.
"Yeah, I've really improved!" The boy's gaze lingered on the girl, following her movements closely.
Liu Qingxi remained completely unaware!
