When Bu suggested that she stay put, Eve snorted lightly, raising her chin in a rather proud manner and glancing sideways at Bu. "You think too highly of me. I'm not some decorative pillow. You all are afraid to confront this Poison Bee swarm, but I can handle it. If you stick close to me, I guarantee you will Anran through."
"What?" Bu was somewhat astonished, but before he could ask further, Eve had already dashed ahead.
"Hah, this girl," he shrugged and followed closely behind with Hong Lian. He was curious about how Eve planned to Anran through a swarm that even he wasn't confident about facing.
After passing through layers of mist and crossing a cliff-like mountain peak, the three of them approached the territory of the Poison Bee swarm. This area was indeed one that Byron and the others had not dared to enter easily. Without the trouble of Shadow Crystal, Bu and his companions only needed to get past the Poison Bees occupying this place to reach the mountain summit.
From a distance, the buzzing sound of wings flapping rapidly pierced through the mist. The sound was dense and intense, becoming increasingly irritating over time. Bu's expression grew serious as he looked at Eve, his eyes revealing a hint of inquiry.
Eve frowned at that moment, rubbing her temples as she said softly, "In a moment, I will use a special Mental Technique. This secret technique falls under the category of forbidden arts, and using it puts a great strain on my body. You must stay close to me and move through this Poison Bee swarm at maximum Speed."
"A Forbidden Technique?" Bu asked with curiosity, nodding to indicate he understood.
"Let's go!" With a sharp command, Eve stepped forward first, rushing into the layers of trees shrouded in mist. Bu did not dare to lag behind and quickly followed with Hong Lian.
Buzz buzz buzz!
Almost as soon as they set foot in the area, the entire northwestern path occupied by the Poison Bees erupted violently, like pouring boiling oil onto a raging fire. Nearly a hundred hives trembled simultaneously as countless black dots formed by the Poison Bees surged forth like a black wind.
"Mental Storm!" Eve paused for a moment; as her eyes suddenly closed, invisible Mental Power erupted from her mind in circles, forming a Mental Storm that swept outwards in all directions.
The scene was indescribably astonishing; the ground covered with Poison Bees resembled suddenly condensed storm clouds descending with an overwhelming buzzing sound. However, just as they were about to approach, waves of invisible Mental Storm swept through like cutting wheat with a knife. The buzzing became chaotic as rows of Poison Bees fell to the ground with flapping wings, creating a brief moment of emptiness in their ranks.
"Run!" Eve's face turned pale as she stumbled forward several steps; her footing faltered as if she were about to fall.
Bu's gaze sharpened; without hesitation, he rushed forward and caught Eve in his arms at her cry. The warmth and softness he felt momentarily halted his movement, but it was only for an instant. As Eve bit her silver teeth and suddenly opened her eyes wide, the sound of rushing wind filled the air as their figures quickly broke through.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh!
The Mental Storm continued to surge in waves, but after experiencing initial chaos, the Poison Bee swarm quickly retaliated. Countless sharp stingers pierced through the mist towards the three of them, almost sealing off all areas and leaving no escape route.
Swish!
The figure of Hong Lian surged forward at that moment, a tremendous energy erupting from within, forming a protective energy shield that firmly guarded the three of them.
The sound of rapid, sharp impacts erupted like rain hitting a pipa, as the three moved at an incredible speed within the energy shield. For a time, they withstood countless attacks from the Poison Bees' stingers. However, this state could not be maintained for long. Although these Poison Bees were not magical beasts and had limited individual strength, their stingers were sharp and highly toxic. Once they formed a swarm, their lethality became terrifying.
"Quickly break out! I can only hold on for ten more breaths. Once the threat of Mental Storm is gone, the attacks from these Poison Bees will become even more intense!" Eve spoke urgently, her face pale. Her trembling finger pointed at her brow, and faint traces of blood began to appear in her light purple eyes.
Bu Chenmo said nothing as he held Eve's delicate body tightly, his feet never stopping as he ran wildly along the northwestern mountain path. Wherever he passed, the Mental Storm swept ahead, causing groups of Poison Bees to fall to the ground and carpet the area with a chilling layer of them. Hong Lian followed closely behind, maintaining the energy shield despite the continuous sharp stinger attacks that caused it to vibrate violently; it never shattered.
After eight breaths, the swarm of Poison Bees remained dense, their buzzing sounding like a demonic chant that clouded their minds.
After five breaths, Step was horrified as he sprinted over a hundred feet. Behind him, the ground was covered with struggling Poison Bees, forming a long carpet. However, there were still many Poison Bees surrounding them from above and below.
The energy shield created by Hong Lian dimmed as it endured the relentless stinger attacks that fell like rain. The piercing stingers carried impact and terrifying toxins that severely drained Hong Lian's energy, showing signs of exhaustion.
With only three breaths left, blood began to seep from Eve's mouth. The swarm of Poison Bees that had obscured the sun finally started to thin out. Some trailing behind even showed signs of turning back. Ahead, through the mist, a rugged slope could be faintly seen.
Whoosh! Another series of sharp sounds pierced through the air as fewer stingers struck against the energy shield with great force, creating ripples of energy. After the impact weakened, many stingers fell to the ground.
This wave of attacks was also the last one. The buzzing swarm of Poison Bees circled in the air for a moment before abandoning their struggling companions on the ground and returning in groups to their hive as the mist receded.
"We made it out!" After running some distance and reaching the steep slope, Step stopped and looked back with relief.
"That was really close!"
Reflecting on their journey, Step felt a lingering fear. If Eve hadn't used forbidden techniques to eliminate most of the Poison Bee swarm, they would never have been able to withstand all those attacks with just Hong Lian's energy shield. Under such terrifying assaults covering the ground, even an Intermediate Level 5 mage casting Level 5 magic Guardian Barrier would struggle to survive; let alone a simple energy shield.
"If things had gone poorly, only Hong Lian might have been able to escape this swarm of Poison Bees with sheer physical strength; Eve and I would probably have been done for!" As he pondered this, Bu Wei smiled down at Eve in his arms. However, his expression suddenly froze.
"Have you had enough holding onto me? Is my body soft? Are you reluctant to let go?" Eve cooed softly like a bird, her beautiful face adorned with a sweet smile. Yet her light purple eyes glared at Step with resentment; the murderous intent in her gaze sent chills down his spine.
"Uh... well..."
Step felt awkward and grinned sheepishly. He instinctively wanted to loosen his grip but reacted quickly enough not to let Eve fall to the ground. However, in that unintentional moment of loosening and tightening his hold again, his left hand accidentally brushed against a soft and ample area. The instant contact sent an electric shock through both their bodies, leaving them momentarily frozen in place as their minds went blank.
Eve was completely stunned, her pupils slightly dilated. The trace of blood at the corner of her mouth appeared so vivid, and her dark purple hair, tied into two bunches, seemed to freeze in place with her current emotions.
"Ugh!" Bu's breath nearly stopped. His hand dared not move an inch as he held Eve tightly, pressing down on her so forcefully that even Hong Lian, who stood behind them, wore a dazed expression.
"Ah!! You!" A scream pierced through the mist, startling the beasts and causing the trees to rustle. It was Eve reacting at that moment, almost fainting from embarrassment and anger.
"Ah!! Me!" Bu, lacking composure, followed suit with a shout. Then, acting quickly and with great awareness, he gently set Eve down on the ground. His heart raced rapidly, his hormones nearly out of balance; the sudden stimulation made him feel a strange thrill. Even as his hands released Eve's body, he felt a hint of reluctance and loss.
The atmosphere suddenly fell into silence. Bu felt awkwardly embarrassed while Eve forced herself to remain calm, though her heart was tumultuous.
Despite her cunning nature and seemingly frivolous demeanor, all of this was a deliberate facade she presented to others. In terms of self-love, she was no less than any virtuous woman.
Having mingled in the treacherous world of mercenaries for many years and being dubbed the Colorful Rose, she had never been involved with any man. Otherwise, she wouldn't have felt such shame and anger at Bu holding onto her so tightly. Now, Bu's unintentional offense shattered her inner peace, leaving her feeling both embarrassed and at a loss.
"Uh, I'm really sorry about earlier!"
Eve's silence overturned her image in Bu Xin, but more importantly, it left Bu feeling somewhat unfamiliar and lost. He didn't know what to say; a simple apology might have provided an escape from their awkwardness but could also have drawn a line between them.
