Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Conversation Between the Directors
At a critical moment, two police cars with flashing red and blue lights and sirens blaring burst through the main gate, coming to a sudden stop just one meter from the scene. The doors of the police cars swung open simultaneously, and officers armed with Type 64 76 pistols jumped out, quickly taking positions and aiming their weapons at the gang members at the scene.
The officers in uniform clearly had more deterrent power than Wang Hailong and his companions in plain clothes. The chaotic scene began to calm down as the agitated gang members halted their actions, but the situation remained precarious.
One gang member, his face flushed from drinking too much, waved an empty beer bottle wildly and shouted, "Let our Brother Long go!"
"Let him go! Let him go!" echoed the others in agreement.
Wang Hailong furrowed his brow; the arrival of reinforcements gave him more confidence. He shouted, "Are you really going to resist law enforcement violently?" Wang Hailong held his gun firmly, ready to fire a warning shot at any moment. His colleagues also prepared themselves; if it came to a confrontation, they would not be at a disadvantage.
"Xiao Long!" Zhao Zhonghua hurriedly signaled from the side. If a fight broke out now, it would escalate significantly. Although it had nothing to do with him personally, being associated with them would not reflect well on him.
Liu Xiaolong blinked; he was not drunk enough to be confused. Moreover, after the recent scare, he had sobered up considerably. He quickly stepped forward and shouted, "Brothers, put down whatever you have in your hands."
A few gang members dropped their beer bottles, but some merely lowered their arms while still tightly gripping their bottles. Liu Xiaolong observed everything quietly, mentally noting those who continued to hold onto their beer bottles. He turned to Wang Hailong, who was surrounded in the middle, and said, "Comrade Police, let's go."
"Take him away." Wang Hailong waved his hand, and immediately two colleagues flanked Liu Xiaolong as they escorted him toward the police car. One of them placed a black hood over Liu Xiaolong's head. Before the hood was fully on, Liu Xiaolong kept his eyes fixed on Zhao Zhonghua. Zhao Zhonghua felt uneasy under that gaze and could only smile awkwardly.
...
After He Jun left the interrogation room and reached his office door, he heard someone calling him from behind. He Jun turned around and asked kindly, "Li, is there something you need?"
"He Bureau, Director Wang wants you to go to his office. He has something to discuss with you."
"Okay, got it." He Jun replied and strode over. Along the way, He Jun wondered if Wang Guodong had discovered his plan. That couldn't be possible; the people he sent were often marginalized, and what he did was a matter of shared fate—if one prospered, they all prospered, and if one suffered, they all suffered. They would never leak information to Wang Guodong. With that thought, He Jun calmed down; when doing big things, one must not lose composure.
At the door of the director's office, He Jun took a deep breath and lightly knocked three times. A neutral voice from inside said, "Come in!"
He Jun pushed the door open and, without any pleasantries, walked straight to the chair in front of Wang Guodong's desk and sat down. "Wang Bureau, what do you need me for?"
Wang Guodong picked up his tea, took a sip, and then gently set it down before slowly saying, "I don't have any specific instructions; I just wanted to chat. You just went out on a call regarding that fight at the county hospital, right?"
He Jun was not surprised and smiled slightly. "Yes, I went to the scene of the brawl and brought back some troublemakers." He sighed, "These young people nowadays don’t know what they’re thinking. Instead of focusing on school, they insist on getting involved in society."
"The movies today... ah, they have such a harmful effect on teenagers..." After expressing his views, Wang Guodong felt a sense of relief and sank deeper into his chair to find a more comfortable position.
"That's true." Although He Jun didn't completely agree with Wang Guodong's statement, he did think that some movies were indeed unsuitable for teenagers. He added, "If movie ratings were enforced properly, it would be better."
Wang Guodong chuckled and didn’t pursue that topic further. Instead, he asked, "What kind of people were those troublemakers? Why fight in a place like the county hospital?"
He Jun explained, "Two men got into a dispute over a girl who works at the county hospital. They each brought along some young people from the community. When both parties met and couldn't reach an agreement, they started fighting. After someone called the police, we rushed over and managed to control the situation before it escalated further."
"With you sitting in the deputy director's position and still leading from the front like this, it's something everyone should learn from," Wang Guodong remarked ambiguously.
He Jun thought to himself that once he had Wang Guodong's nephew arrested and the reporters blew the matter up, it was likely that this position wouldn't belong to him anymore.
"What are you laughing at?" Wang Guodong suddenly asked.
He Jun quickly realized and blamed his coat, hurriedly explaining, "Of course I'm happy to be praised."
"Hahaha..." Wang Guodong laughed heartily. This is just how He Jun is. If it were someone a bit more clever, they would surely have been praised by the director... but He Jun never goes along with anyone. However, because of this, while Wang Guodong marginalized He Jun, he was also willing to let him handle the subordinate tasks. Wang Guodong never expected that the docile kitten could grow into a tiger with fangs.
