Chapter 44: The Just Editor-in-Chief
Zhang Qiu hurriedly said to Editor-in-Chief: "Right now, Liu Journalist is in the detention center in Beilan County. She is temporarily safe, but this situation is extremely unreasonable. I hope you can report on this matter." While speaking, Zhang Qiu felt anxious. Although Editor-in-Chief had made his stance clear, he might not be willing to offend local leaders over Liu Fangfei's issue, which could put himself and News Agency at unnecessary risk.
To Zhang Qiu's surprise, Editor-in-Chief readily agreed. He said, "Don't worry, in a situation like this, we at News Agency will definitely not stand by. We have already arranged for reporters to go to Beilan County, and if necessary, we will also produce a special report on this matter."
Zhang Qiu exclaimed in astonishment, "That's really great!" It seemed that this Editor-in-Chief was better than he had imagined; he truly had a sense of justice. After hanging up the phone, Zhang Qiu checked the time—he had a little over ten minutes before he needed to go to school. He quickly lay down on the bed, cherishing these few minutes to rest.
After hanging up with Zhang Qiu, Editor-in-Chief muttered to himself, "I really underestimated Liu; this unassuming girl has such influence. Fortunately, I didn't discourage her back then. Once she gets out and I win her favor, my future will surely be bright." With that thought, a barely noticeable smile appeared at the corner of Editor-in-Chief's mouth.
The person who had answered the phone earlier stood respectfully nearby and asked Editor-in-Chief: "Sir, may I ask you a question?"
Editor-in-Chief glanced at him and replied, "What question?"
"Why did you let Liu Journalist publish that report when so many people were skeptical?"
"Well, think about it yourself. Once you understand, you'll be ready to take my position as Editor-in-Chief." With that, Editor-in-Chief turned and left the person pondering his words.
Zhang Qiu had not fallen asleep; he was merely resting with his eyes closed, but his mind was restless. He sat up and tried to call Wang Jinghan. With Liu Xiaofei detained, there would temporarily be no one bothering her.
As expected, Wang Jinghan had not turned off her phone. When the call connected, her sweet voice came through: "Aren't you going to school today?"
Zhang Qiu replied with a smile, "Of course I am! I'll be going soon. Before I do, I wanted to chat with you and hear your voice."
"Pfft! What's so great about my voice?" Although Wang Jinghan said this, she couldn't help but feel happy inside.
"I think it's lovely," Zhang Qiu laughed. "Let me tell you something amazing: my family actually has a family heirloom! My dad gave it to me today."
"Family heirloom? What is it, an antique?" Wang Jinghan asked.
Zhang Qiu replied, "It's a jade pendant. There’s an incredible story behind this pendant that will surely shock you."
Wang Jinghan became interested. "Really? Then tell me about it! I love hearing stories."
Zhang Qiu glanced at the time and reluctantly said, "I have to go to class now. Let's wait until the weekend. I'll take a half-day off to come and hang out with you and tell you the story."
"Hmph, you just want to ask me out!" Wang Jinghan said, feeling pleased that she had figured out Zhang Qiu's intentions. "Don't bother taking time off; just focus on your studies. Alright, I'm hanging up!"
Zhang Qiu shook his head helplessly while holding his phone, recalling a line from a song: "Boys, don't guess a girl's thoughts; no matter how much you guess, you won't understand..."
After putting his phone on silent and placing it in his pocket, he prepared to go to school. Although the school prohibited students from bringing phones, he felt he had no choice but to carry one. Liu Xiaolong could come for revenge at any moment, and he needed to be on guard. Fortunately, there were no dedicated personnel checking for phones at school; as long as he wasn't caught using it by a teacher, it would be fine.
...
In the detention center, Liu Fangfei was inside a large room with beds on both sides. In one corner of the wall was the area for washing and relieving oneself, while the other side had cabinets for toiletries. From the moment she was apprehended, Liu Fangfei knew that her own report had brought her trouble. However, she wasn't worried about what would happen to her; once her family learned of her situation, they would surely find a way to get her out.
What Liu Fangfei was most concerned about was whether the inmates around her would bully her. She had heard about the darkness of detention centers; they represented filth, dirtiness, and cruelty... At that moment, Liu Fangfei crouched in a corner, trembling under countless piercing gazes directed at her.
After a long while, a female inmate called out to her, "Newcomer, come here."
Liu Fangfei raised her head in fear and looked at the person speaking. She hesitantly walked over and stood in front of the female inmate without daring to say a word. The inmate sat in the middle of the bed with several others attending to her on either side. Liu Fangfei silently thought that this must be the Boss around here.
The Boss scrutinized Liu Fangfei while several inmates stepped down from their beds and surrounded her. Liu Fangfei stood helplessly in place like a sheep caught in a wolf pack, frozen with fear.
The person sitting next to the Boss pointed at Liu Fangfei and asked, "The newcomer, what did you do wrong?"
Liu Fangfei looked at the person asking the question in fear and replied, "I didn't do anything wrong."
"Hahahaha..."
As soon as Liu Fangfei finished speaking, the crowd burst into laughter, with the questioner doubling over in amusement. Once he straightened up, he slapped Liu Fangfei across the face and scolded, "Damn! Everyone who comes here claims they haven't done anything wrong. You think this is a joke? Now that you're here, stop pretending."
Liu Fangfei covered her face, feeling a sharp pain where she had been hit. Growing up, she had always been cherished at home; her father spoiled her, her mother loved her, and even her brother couldn't bear to see her suffer, let alone be hit by someone. Liu Fangfei had never experienced such hardship before and couldn't hold back as a tear rolled down from the corner of her eye.
Seeing Liu Fangfei cry, the man struck her again and laughed loudly while pointing at her, boasting to the crowd, "This worthless girl is crying; it's just too funny, hahahaha."
The crowd erupted in laughter once more. Liu Fangfei covered the other side of her face, desperately trying not to cry.
At that moment, the Boss, sitting among them like a central figure surrounded by stars, coldly asked, "I advise you to be honest; this group can easily take you down. If you understand the rules, it will be easier for you. Just answer whatever you're asked. Do you understand?"
Liu Fangfei mechanically nodded her head, her mind blank.
