Chapter 56: Adding Insult to Injury
Zhang Qiu stared at the note from Gao Zhi, lost in thought. Who was targeting him? Was it Liu Xiaolong or Liu Xiaofei?
For the entire class, Zhang Qiu couldn't concentrate. After class, he intended to find Gao Zhi to talk, but saw that Gao Zhi had already approached him.
Zhang Qiu said to Gao Zhi, "Let's go outside." Gao Zhi nodded and followed Zhang Qiu out of the classroom.
Zhang Qiu and Gao Zhi walked slowly along a secluded corridor in the campus, which was rarely used and perfect for a conversation. The warm yellow light from the nearby streetlamps filtered through the willow trees, casting beautiful shadows on the ground. A breeze blew by, causing Zhang Qiu to tighten his jacket as he looked at the swaying shadows on the ground and asked, "Do you know who is after me?"
"Song Dongwei," Gao Zhi replied.
"Song Weidong? The one from our grade?" Zhang Qiu was surprised; he had no grievances with Song Weidong, so why would he want to cause trouble?
"Yes, that's him. Tonight when I came back from the restroom, six or seven of them were in the hallway, looking aggressive. One of them stopped me and told me to go into the classroom and call you out. I told them you were on leave, and then they left."
Zhang Qiu nodded, stopping in his tracks to think. Gao Zhi added, "Sounds like this guy is quite formidable."
"I know; our senior year has two major figures—one is Song Weidong, and the other is even tougher, named Zeng Fan. But I don't recall offending him," Zhang Qiu said, puzzled as he couldn't figure out why Song Weidong would act this way.
Suddenly, Zhang Qiu quickened his pace and reached the edge of the playground's wall, with Gao Zhi closely following behind.
This area was one of the few blind spots for school cameras—a good place for couples to meet secretly and also a great spot to evade the school's watchful eyes. After ensuring no one was nearby, Zhang Qiu took out his phone from his pocket without hesitation in front of Gao Zhi and directly dialed Yang Yu's number.
The phone rang a few times before it connected. Zhang Qiu immediately said, "Yang Yu, are you free tonight? I need you for something."
"Sure, Brother Qiu! What time do you need me? How many people?" Yang Yu's voice sounded excited on the other end. They had fought together in middle school for various reasons; this was a code only he and Zhang Qiu understood.
"9:35 PM. The more people, the better. The person we're dealing with is named Song Dongwei; you can check him out first," Zhang Qiu instructed.
"Alright, I've heard of this person. No problem, Brother Qiu, whoever it is, let's just get it done."
"Of course, let's just do it," Zhang Qiu laughed as well.
After hanging up the phone, Zhang Qiu looked at Gao Zhi and said, "Let's go back."
Gao Zhi nodded silently, lost in thought, hesitating to speak. From the phone call he just overheard, he realized that this usually honest-looking Zhang Qiu was not someone to be underestimated. However, this only piqued Gao Zhi's interest further; he found Zhang Qiu to be quite an intriguing person. "Zhang Qiu, I'll go with you tonight."
Zhang Qiu glanced at him, shook his head, then nodded and said, "Alright, if you want to go, then go."
Seeing Zhang Qiu agree, Gao Zhi felt a surge of excitement inside.
During the last evening study session, Zhao Guohong indeed came into the classroom. Zhang Qiu watched as the homeroom teacher approached him and smiled gently at her. Zhao Guohong shot Zhang Qiu a glare and said, "Pay attention and stop grinning like that."
Zhang Qiu quickly lowered his head; he wasn't in the mood to pay attention anyway. Things were already bad enough, and now they were getting worse. Outside of school were Liu Xiaolong and Liu Xiaofei, and now there was also Song Weidong inside the school. Why did they all have to show up right before the college entrance examination? Was this some kind of test for him? Zhang Qiu helplessly recalled a line from classical literature: "To entrust great responsibilities to a person, one must first torment their mind and body..."
Lost in thought throughout the entire class, as soon as the bell rang for dismissal, Zhang Qiu dashed out of the classroom. He needed to find Song Dongwei to clarify things. Since he had sent someone to find him before, why not go directly to him? Being proactive was always better than being reactive; Zhang Qiu disliked being passive.
Zhang Qiu had heard of Song Weidong. He came from a wealthy family; his father was the chairman of a company in the city. He enrolled in Beiluan No. 1 High School by paying a school selection fee. Because of his wealth and tendency to stand up for friends, Song Weidong had gathered a group around him and had quite a reputation—much better than that second-generation rich kid named Zeng Fan. In this school, Song Weidong was quite popular. But why would someone like him want to cause trouble for Zhang Qiu?
After a bit of inquiry, Zhang Qiu found out which class Song Weidong was in. He didn't call Gao Zhi; if things turned physical, it would be two against one and they would definitely be at a disadvantage. It was better for him to go in alone.
Standing at the classroom door, Zhang Qiu asked a girl sitting closest to the door, "Could you please call for Song Weidong?"
The girl glanced at Zhang Qiu and turned her head to look around the classroom. She quickly spotted her target and shouted loudly, "Dong Ge, someone is looking for you."
At that moment, Song Weidong was leaning back in his seat with two students chatting beside him. Hearing someone calling for him, he shifted his gaze toward the classroom door.
There was only one boy standing at the door; it must be him. With slightly long hair and a tall stature, he wore a black hoodie on top and jeans on the bottom. Even from afar, Song Weidong could tell that this person wasn't wearing any brand-name clothes. This kind of person would blend into a crowd easily; however, Song Weidong sensed an unusual aura from his eyes.
Song Weidong stood up and walked towards the door, followed by the two people he was chatting with.
"Who are you?" Song Weidong asked.
"Zhang Qiu," Zhang Qiu replied calmly, while asking him, "I heard you were looking for me?"
Song Weidong smiled, realizing that this was Zhang Qiu. He seemed like a rather honest person; it was unclear how he had offended Brother Long. However, that wasn't the main point. The key was that he needed Zhang Qiu to handle things for Brother Long.
"I'm looking for you because you've offended someone, you know? Here's the deal: I don't want to make things difficult for you. Let's each give you a few hits, and we'll call it even, alright?" Song Weidong said casually. He knew everyone who mattered in Beiluan Middle School. This Zhang Qiu was just an unknown character, one of those people in every school who lacked ability but loved to stir up trouble.
"Heh." Zhang Qiu sneered, "I want to know who wants to mess with me."
In the past, if someone spoke to him like this, regardless of whether he could fight back or not, Zhang Qiu would have slapped them right away. But Song Weidong's words clearly indicated that there were others behind him. Recent events had made Zhang Qiu increasingly patient.
Patience is for a better strike. A person who could handle himself in front of Police Chief Wang Guodong would not be easily intimidated by Song Weidong. The urgent matter was to understand who was targeting him.
No matter who it was, Zhang Qiu would not let them off easily.
