Chapter Sixty-Three: The Truth Comes to Light
As Zhang Qiu and Yang Yu reminisced about the past, neither of them noticed the time passing. It wasn't until Zhang Qiu suddenly remembered that it was already eleven o'clock. The two hurriedly parted ways, and Zhang Qiu hopped on his electric vehicle and sped home. Upon entering the house, he found his parents still awake, sitting in the living room with a look of concern on their faces. He Mei stood up as soon as she saw Zhang Qiu and asked, "Why are you home so late?"
When He Mei walked closer, she wrinkled her nose and said, "Why do you smell like alcohol?"
Zhang Qiu smiled awkwardly and replied, "I ran into Yang Yu and we had a meal together."
"Go take a shower quickly and get to bed," He Mei insisted, pushing Zhang Qiu toward the stairs.
While chatting earlier, they had been full of energy and didn't feel tired at all. However, once things quieted down, exhaustion hit Zhang Qiu all at once. He climbed to the second floor, took off his clothes, and stepped into the bathroom. The shower sprayed a gentle stream of hot water over him, making him feel completely relaxed.
When parting ways with Yang Yu, they had discussed their future plans. They both agreed that relying solely on students from their school to engage in violent activities was utterly nonsensical. However, it was sufficient to deal with Zeng Fan. Zhang Qiu had no intention of pursuing that path; what he was doing now was merely a temporary measure.
After finishing his shower, Zhang Qiu lay comfortably in bed and fell asleep. He felt as if he had just closed his eyes when the alarm clock began ringing incessantly.
Zhang Qiu blinked awake and got out of bed, instinctively going through the motions of getting dressed and washing up. As soon as he stepped outside, a sharp breeze rushed into his collar, jolting him awake.
Upon entering the classroom, all eyes turned toward him. Many classmates had witnessed what happened last night outside the teaching building. Even those who hadn’t seen it firsthand had heard about it. No one expected the quiet and honest Zhang Qiu to show such a fierce side, especially with those masked individuals wielding baseball bats who were truly ruthless—without hesitation, they swung their bats.
Jiang Xue stood up from her seat as soon as she saw Zhang Qiu enter the classroom. She rushed over to him and lifted his arm to check for injuries while asking, "Did you get hurt anywhere?"
Zhang Qiu shook his head with a smile and said, "No, I reassured you before leaving the classroom; I had to follow through."
Suddenly, Jiang Xue punched Zhang Qiu lightly in the chest and scolded him, "I told you not to go, but you insisted! Do you know how worried that made me?"
So focused on her concern for him, Jiang Xue forgot about her surroundings in the classroom. All her classmates were casting ambiguous glances at Jiang Xue and Zhang Qiu. Jiang Xue's face turned red as she lowered her head. Zhang Qiu's ears also flushed; however, he found this feeling quite pleasant.
Zhang Qiu reached out to pat Jiang Xue's head and said, "This time it was my fault. But if there's another chance like this, I would still do it."
"Why?" Jiang Xue looked up at Zhang Qiu.
"I can't stand them arguing with you," Zhang Qiu replied.
"I saw everything downstairs yesterday. You were really cool at that moment," Jiang Xue said, gripping her clothes. "But, can you be a bit more careful in the future?"
"Okay, I promise you," Zhang Qiu said with a smile.
Zhang Qiu watched as Jiang Xue happily jumped back to her seat. Remembering her concern for him made his previously groggy mood lift.
Zhang Qiu glanced at the four brothers who had fought alongside him last night; they were all looking at him. Their eyes met, and all five of them burst into laughter, understanding each other without words.
Another session of language self-study began. Zhang Qiu took out "64 Must-Know Classical Poems for College Entrance Examination." Before long, Xu Qing Chu walked into the classroom and stood at the podium, saying, "Today, we will recite 'Ode to the Red Cliffs' in the first half of class and then check it. Write down those commonly mistaken characters I asked you to highlight on paper to reinforce your memory. Don't just stare at them; it's easy to fall asleep."
As soon as Xu Qing Chu finished speaking, the classroom door was pushed open, and Director Zhao's somewhat bulky figure squeezed in. He looked at Xu Qing Chu and said, "Teacher Xu, I need to find a few students."
"Sure, Director Zhao," Xu Qing Chu nodded slightly.
Upon hearing Director Zhao's words, an ominous premonition arose in Zhang Qiu's heart. He couldn't help but look up and happened to see Xu Qing Chu glancing at him.
Director Zhao scanned the classroom and slowly called out several names: Zhang Qiu, Gao Zhi, Zhao Pingchuan, Wang Zhengxiang, and Yao Yu were all included.
After calling out the names, Zhang Qiu immediately understood what was happening. It must be that the director found out about the fight from last night; it seemed there was no way to avoid this.
Zhang Qiu's expression darkened; he didn't want to face punishment, but what could he do? While the others hesitated, Zhang Qiu stood up first and walked toward Director Zhao. Seeing Zhang Qiu already standing up, Gao Zhi and the others followed suit.
As Zhang Qiu passed by the podium, he noticed Xu Qing Chu looking at him meaningfully. He smiled awkwardly; it was indeed embarrassing since he had been causing problems during her self-study sessions ever since she joined this class.
Director Zhao walked ahead, with Zhang Qiu and a few others closely following behind. Zhang Qiu felt a bit worried; the last time Director Zhao had let him off was because the situation was indeed minor. But this time, it seemed that it was no longer just a matter of making a show. What was worse, he had inadvertently dragged these friends into it.
In the Director's Office, Director Zhao's expression was grim as he coldly looked at the group and said, "What were you all doing last night?"
The group fell silent. Zhang Qiu stepped forward and said, "Director Zhao, last night during self-study, a student named Wang Zhen came with about ten others to find me. They were making a racket at the door, and the duty student tried to stop them, but they insisted I go out before they would leave. Seeing how disruptive they were, I felt uneasy about affecting my classmates' studies, so I had no choice but to go with them..."
Director Zhao suddenly interrupted Zhang Qiu, raising his heavy hand and slamming it on the table with force, his words filled with anger: "Get to the point! How did you get into a fight?"
Zhang Qiu could tell that Director Zhao was genuinely angry. However, whether he was angry or not didn’t change the fact that the incident had already occurred; what could he do now?
"Director, can I start from the beginning? Because without that, I don't know how to explain."
"Go on," Director Zhao maintained his cold demeanor.
"When I went outside, that student named Wang Zhen and his group surrounded me. I didn't know them and had to ask what they wanted. They intended to beat me up, but I was confused; we had no grievances against each other. Why did they want to hit me? Although I had various questions, in that situation, I could only comply and go with them."
Director Zhao angrily replied, "Those are just excuses! You're not a child anymore. Since you didn't know them and they wanted to hit you, why didn't you report it to a teacher? I see there are still issues between you!"
