Lan Ningshan was struggling because Zhang Qiu couldn't help him. Although he knew Jiang Xue, he was completely unaware of Zhang Qiu's situation. Now that Yang Yu was helping, things had improved significantly; at least there was someone who understood the details. Lan Ningshan couldn't wait to meet Yang Yu and simultaneously reported the case to the police station, initiating an investigation to rescue Jiang Xue.
Lan Ningshan drove to the police station and saw a young man standing under the eaves. He rolled down the car window and asked, "Are you Yang Yu?"
Yang Yu was anxiously waiting under the eaves when he saw a white sedan stop at the entrance. As the window slowly lowered, a beautiful female detective leaned out and asked him. Yang Yu quickly replied, "That's me." Lan Ningshan waved her hand and said, "Get in!"
Yang Yu opened the car door and got in. Lan Ningshan drove straight to the basketball court. Yang Yu leaned over from the back seat and asked, "Aren't we going to rescue Jiang Xue?"
Lan Ningshan slammed on the brakes and stopped at the basketball court, turning around to say, "Of course we are."
"Then why are we stopping? Shouldn't we leave immediately?"
"Leave immediately? Do you know where Jiang Xue is?" Lan Ningshan smiled, bringing Yang Yu along just to get some details first. After all, Zhang Qiu was in the hospital, and since it involved a case, some things had to be approached cautiously.
Yang Yu said, "It must be Chen Hu's people!"
"Are you so sure about that?"
"Of course! Who else could it be?"
Lan Ningshan suddenly thought of something and plugged a USB drive into the car, pulling up a video on the screen. She asked, "Take a look at this. Do you recognize anyone in it?"
Yang Yu leaned over the seat, carefully identifying the images on the screen. He immediately recognized Jiang Xue; a white van was parked next to her, and two young men with dyed hair jumped out of the vehicle. A few seconds later, someone poked their head out from inside the van. Yang Yu shouted, "Liu Xiaolong!"
Lan Ningshan's eyes moved slightly; it was clear that Yang Yu recognized him. She asked, "Is this Liu Xiaolong one of Chen Hu's people?"
Yang Yu shook his head awkwardly and said, "No."
Lan Ningshan clearly wasn't trying to put Yang Yu in a difficult position and quickly followed up with another question: "Then who is he? What is his relationship with you? You need to tell me everything."
Seeing Yang Yu hesitate, Lan Ningshan added, "I am Zhang Qiu's sister; you should trust me."
"I believe you." Yang Yu nodded solemnly. "It was Zhang Qiu who asked me to find you, and I will tell you everything I know."
Yang Yu recounted everything from the incident where Zhang Qiu's father was injured, to the Ancient City Battle, and the subsequent events. Since then, the once arrogant Liu Xiaolong seemed to have vanished, rarely seen or mentioned. Who would have thought that Liu Xiaolong would now engage in such insidious activities?
Lan Ningshan fell into deep thought. Previously, she only knew that Jiang Xue had stabbed someone to save Zhang Qiu, but she had no idea so many stories were happening behind the scenes. Even the personnel changes at the Beilan County Public Security Bureau and the replacement of Police Chief Wang Guodong were affected. This truly exemplified the butterfly effect; a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon rainforest could lead to a tornado in Texas two weeks later.
"So, Jiang Xue's kidnapping is because of your previous grievances?" Lan Ningshan asked.
"It should be!" Yang Yu glared at Liu Xiaolong's face on the screen, cracking his knuckles.
"Don't act impulsively. Let me ask you, what caused Zhang Qiu's injury and hospitalization? Did you all get into another fight, or did you do something else?" Lan Ningshan scrutinized Yang Yu's tattered clothes and wounds, clearly indicating that he had gone with Zhang Qiu.
Yang Yu looked into Lan Ningshan's eyes but found no information there. After a long pause, he said, "Brother Qiu discovered that his sister-in-law was missing and immediately took people to Chen Hu's place to demand her back. Before that, a thug named Mao Tong under Chen Hu had repeatedly caused trouble for Brother Qiu and even brought people to smash up White Day Fire. A few nights ago, we also caused a ruckus at Azure Blue Rose, resulting in significant losses for them. If it were up to me, I would have suspected them too; who knew it wasn't them?"
"Why didn't you call the police?"
Yang Yu looked at Lan Ningshan as if she had made a joke.
"Do you realize that because of your reckless actions, a problem that could have been resolved through our police has now put you on the wrong side of the law? Zhang Qiu has already been arrested and according to the law, he will definitely face punishment. The college entrance examination is less than a month away; do you understand what this means for him?" Lan Ningshan became increasingly agitated. What a great pair they were; how could they suffer so much misfortune? It was truly fate playing tricks on them.
Yang Yu began to feel guilty as well. If only he had stopped Brother Qiu back then; it was all his fault for being impulsive too. Looking back now, their actions seemed so naive—challenging an established organization that had existed for decades with their fledgling group; it was strange that nothing went wrong.
"Enough of this; let's save Jiang Xue first!" Lan Ningshan made a decisive decision and led Yang Yu out of the car and directly into the building. At the entrance, Yang Yu signed his name on the registration form. Lan Ningshan found Ma Zhen deep in thought in his office. Seeing him staring blankly ahead, she gently tapped his shoulder and said, "Captain Ma?"
Ma Zhen came back to reality and smiled upon seeing Lan Ningshan. "What brings you here?"
"There’s something," Lan Ningshan said seriously as she introduced the case to Ma Zhen. "A female student from Beiluan No. 1 High School was kidnapped by a white Jinbei van while walking from east to west after school at noon near the Maternity and Baby Center."
"This is a friend of the kidnapped student; he personally identified the suspect," Lan Ningshan added as she placed a USB drive on the table. "This is surveillance footage I copied from the Maternity and Baby Center."
Ma Zhen looked at Lan Ningshan's competent demeanor and couldn't help but say, "Good job; you're becoming more impressive."
"Captain Ma, the girl who was kidnapped is Jiang Xue," Lan Ningshan said.
Ma Zhen was taken aback and confirmed with Lan Ningshan again, "Is it that Jiang Xue?"
Lan Ningshan nodded, "That's right, it's the same Jiang Xue, Zhang Qiu's girlfriend, the one who was once held in our facility and personally taken out by Director He."
Ma Zhen then asked the person Lan Ningshan brought with him, "Did you recognize the person who kidnapped Jiang Xue? Who are they?"
"Liu Xiaolong."
"Which Liu Xiaolong?"
"The Liu Xiaolong who is the nephew of Wang Guodong, the former director of the Public Security Bureau in Beilan County," Yang Yu explained to Ma Zhen, mimicking Lan Ningshan.
Ma Zhen took a deep breath; things suddenly became confusing. A case larger than the Azure Blue Rose brawl had emerged. Before he could sort through his thoughts, Lan Ningshan's next statement plunged him into deeper contemplation.
"Captain Ma, actually, the case you are working on and this case are one and the same."
"What do you mean?"
"Didn't we capture two people today?"
"That's right, one male and one female, both suspects involved in the Azure Blue Rose brawl."
"That male is Zhang Qiu!" Lan Ningshan guessed from Ma Zhen's expression that he probably still didn't know Zhang Qiu was involved. It was no wonder; Zhang Qiu had been sent to the hospital, and Rui Rui—Ma Zhen might not have seen her—wouldn't know it was Zhang Qiu either.
"What!" Ma Zhen stood up from the table. "The injured person you mentioned is Zhang Qiu?"
"Yes."
"What on earth is going on?" Ma Zhen's head was spinning; after years of service, he had never encountered such a tricky problem.
“Captain Ma, I will explain this case to you slowly later. For now, let's quickly arrange the operation to rescue Jiang Xue.”
“Okay!” Lan Ningshan reminded Ma Zhen that no matter how complicated things were, they were manageable. The only exception was Jiang Xue; nothing could go wrong with her.
Ma Zhen immediately began the investigation. Using the surveillance data brought by Lan Ningshan and the electronic police records from various traffic intersections during lunchtime, they quickly established Jiang Xue's whereabouts. The last sighting of the white Jinbei Van was near Xiangtang Village in the southwest of the county. Ma Zhen pointed at the intersection on the screen and said, “Xiangtang Village, this is where it is.”
“Captain Ma, let's hurry up and set off.”
Lan Ningshan was eager, and Ma Zhen understood the seriousness of the situation. A girl could be in danger in the hands of criminals; the longer they delayed, the less safe it became. Ma Zhen selected his team and said, “You all set off immediately, dress in plain clothes, drive unmarked cars, and secretly infiltrate Xiangtang Village for reconnaissance. Report immediately if you spot the white van or any suspicious individuals.”
“Yes!”
After completing these tasks, Ma Zhen quickly contacted the County Public Security Bureau Criminal Police Team to hand over the information they had gathered.
“Captain Ma, aren't you going to lead the team personally?”
“There are too many complicated matters; I need to stay at the station to handle them.”
“Then Captain Ma, can I go along?”
“Shan Shan, this matter is different; you should trust my team. They have been in law enforcement for many years and are very professional in handling such situations.”
Lan Ningshan sensed Ma Zhen's implication—he was worried she would disrupt the operation and didn't fully trust her. Hmph! However, Lan Ningshan didn't throw a tantrum; if she wasn't allowed to go and ended up causing trouble, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself.
“Captain Ma, then I will go visit Zhang Qiu at the hospital.”
“Alright, go ahead. Please send my regards.”
After Lan Ningshan left with Yang Yu, Ma Zhen also departed, walking into an empty room, locking the door, and dialing a number.
"Is Rui Rui locked up here? Can I go see her?" In the hallway, Yang Yu asked Lan Ningshan.
"Don't worry, she won't have any problems here."
"Do you have a doctor here?"
"No, this is a police station, not a hospital. Why do you ask that?"
"Rui Rui is injured!" Yang Yu clearly remembered that at noon, outside Azure Blue Rose, Rui Rui had been swinging a baseball bat and charging through the crowd. Several times, she had been surrounded by people and had taken countless hits.
"Really?" Lan Ningshan initially thought that Yang Yu was just worried about Rui Rui, but hearing his concern made her take it seriously. "Come with me; I'll take you to see her."
"Okay."
Lan Ningshan walked ahead, and Yang Yu quickly followed behind.
