Lan Ningshan brought Yang Yu to the place where Jiang Xue was detained and said, "Your friend hasn't come out yet, so she's temporarily held here. However, we haven't transferred her to the detention center; she's just in the holding room for now."
Yang Yu was confused by these terms and didn't care whether it was called a Detention Room or a holding room. She simply said, "Let's go in and see her."
"Okay."
Lan Ningshan called someone to open the door. It was a small room of about four or five square meters, with a maroon security door at the entrance. The room was dark, with light only coming in from a narrow window near the ceiling on the southern side, which had a layer of security bars outside. There was a wooden bed on the floor, and a cement partition at the foot of the bed served as a toilet area. Rui Rui was curled up in the corner, looking dejected, hugging her knees and staring at the ground, indifferent to the noise at the door.
"Rui Rui," Yang Yu tried to call out.
Rui Rui suddenly lifted her head; the light coming in from outside made her squint. She narrowed her eyes and tentatively asked, "Are you Yang Yu?"
"That's right, I am Yang Yu."
Rui Rui's eyes widened in surprise. "Were you captured by them?"
Yang Yu quickly explained to Rui Rui, "I'm here to see you."
"What about Zhang Qiu?" Rui Rui jumped off the bed and ran straight toward the door. The police officer opening the door instinctively reached for his weapon at his waist and shouted, "Don't move! Stay where you are!"
Rui Rui stopped in her tracks but continued shouting, "Yang Yu, please tell me how Zhang Qiu is doing!"
"Don't worry, Zhang Qiu is fine. I just came from the hospital, right from her bedside."
Rui Rui looked at the female officer speaking and hesitantly asked, "Who are you?"
"My name is Lan Ningshan; I'm a police officer here." Lan Ningshan smiled professionally and said to the nearby officer, "Let her come over; she won't cause any trouble."
Rui Rui walked toward Lan Ningshan while the officer kept his hand on his waist, watching Rui Rui warily. This was someone Captain Ma had specifically instructed to keep an eye on; there could be no mistakes.
"Have you found Jiang Xue?" Even while being detained, Rui Rui still thought of her closest friends.
"We have located Jiang Xue's whereabouts. Don't worry, our Public Security Bureau will do everything we can to rescue her."
Yang Yu interjected, "It was Liu Xiaolong who did it!"
"That's right!" Rui Rui was already very familiar with the name Liu Xiaolong, having heard Zhang Qiu and Yang Yu recount the story of the Ancient City Battle more than a dozen times.
"Rui Rui, don't worry about anyone else for now. How are you? Are you feeling okay?"
Rui Rui forced a smile, "Both my arms are swollen, and it hurts everywhere. Even when I'm not touched, it still hurts."
"Officer Blue, take Jiang Xue for treatment. This can't go on!" Yang Yu surveyed the conditions of the detention room and frowned; this place was too terrible, seemingly designed specifically for torment.
"Alright, let's go to the hospital for treatment." Considering that Rui Rui was Zhang Qiu's friend, Lan Ningshan was willing to give her some preferential treatment. Of course, this was not against regulations and did not violate her principles.
Lan Ningshan intended to take Rui Rui to the hospital but was stopped by a nearby officer who said, "Officer Blue, you can't take her away. Captain Ma instructed me to keep a close watch on her."
"She is injured and needs treatment."
"Officer Blue, please don't make this difficult for me."
Lan Ningshan had no choice but to say, "Then I'll call Captain Ma. That should be fine, right?"
"That's fine. As long as Captain Ma agrees, I will release her immediately."
"It's not about releasing her; it's about taking her for treatment," Lan Ningshan corrected him and dialed the phone. Suddenly, she turned to Yang Yu.
"What is it?" Yang Yu asked.
"On a call." Lan Ningshan dialed again, but it was still busy.
"I'm fine, you all go save Jiang Xue."
"No way, Rui Rui, you have to get treated, or Brother Qiu will kill me."
The police officer nearby shot them a strange look, but Yang Yu and Rui Rui were oblivious. Rui Rui smiled and asked, "Does he care about me that much?"
"Of course he does. You should know what kind of person Brother Qiu is."
Rui Rui smiled again; her smile looked radiant but clearly revealed her weakness.
"Got through!" Lan Ningshan immediately said, "Captain Ma, I need to report something. Rui Rui is injured and needs to go to the hospital. I'm curious how you all just locked her up."
Lan Ningshan handed the phone to the police officer. After receiving the order, the officer said, "Officer Ma, you can take her for treatment now. Don't blame me; I'm just following orders."
"I won't. Thank you." Lan Ningshan supported Rui Rui. "Let's go, let's go to the hospital."
Yang Yu moved to the other side, and the two helped Rui Rui into the car. It was still raining outside, but it wasn't pouring as heavily as before. Lan Ningshan drove straight to the county hospital while Yang Yu watched Rui Rui from behind. Rui Rui leaned lazily against the seat, her eyes gazing out at the rain, a faint warm smile on her lips.
Upon arriving at the county hospital, Rui Rui insisted on seeing Zhang Qiu. Lan Ningshan held onto her tightly and said, "Bringing you to the county hospital for treatment is so you can see Zhang Qiu, but first, you need to take care of yourself."
"But I still want to see Zhang Qiu first."
"I'm a police officer; everything has to go my way—no bargaining. Now, let's get you treated. If you think you don't need treatment, fine, I'll take you back to the station." Lan Ningshan displayed her domineering style again; she was doing this for Rui Rui's own good—women should cherish their bodies.
"Alright, I'll listen to you." Rui Rui replied reluctantly but had no choice; she had no doubt that this policewoman would take her back to the station. She was a criminal after all; this was probably what Zhang Qiu had meant when they were caught—being at someone else's mercy. Rui Rui reminisced about when she and Zhang Qiu were just arrested. In the police car, Zhang Qiu had held her tightly; that embrace felt so warm.
"Let's go; if we finish the check-up early, you'll be able to see Zhang Qiu sooner."
"That phrase from Lan Ningshan works well," Rui Rui followed her from one department to another, and the outcome was reassuring; Rui Rui's injuries were not serious. The bruises on her body were all due to being struck, and the doctor immediately applied ointment to Rui Rui and prescribed a large bag of medication for both internal and external use. Rui Rui felt it was excessive, but both Yang Yu and Lan Ningshan seemed to want even more. Holding the large bag of medicine, Rui Rui asked with a mix of laughter and tears, "Can I go see Zhang Qiu now?"
"You can, you can," Lan Ningshan smiled as she led Rui Rui and Yang Yu to the ward. It wasn't just Rui Rui who was excited; Yang Yu felt thrilled as well. Since their separation at noon, it was clear what Zhang Qiu staying behind to block the police meant. Yang Yu never imagined she would see Zhang Qiu so soon.
Lan Ningshan pushed open the door, and Rui Rui and Yang Yu rushed to Zhang Qiu's bedside. Rui Rui even threw herself onto Zhang Qiu's blanket, asking with a trembling voice, "Zhang Qiu, how are you?"
"Hey, how did you get out!"
Inside the ward, the old police officer exchanged glances with his colleagues. One officer pointed at Rui Rui and asked, but it was Wang Baoguo's experience that shone through as he directly questioned Lan Ningshan, "Lan, how did you let her out?"
"Uncle Wang, it's like this; this girl is injured quite seriously, so I brought her to the hospital for treatment."
"Why did you bring her into the ward?" Wang Baoguo asked pointedly. However, he didn't intend to put Lan Ningshan in a difficult position and quickly followed up with, "Is she okay?"
Lan Ningshan shook her head: "She's fine."
"Lan, come out; I need to talk to you."
Lan Ningshan nodded and followed Wang Baoguo outside the ward. Once they left, only the police officer remained in the room as an outsider. Zhang Qiu ignored him completely and patted Rui Rui's head with a smile, saying, "You're okay now?"
"I'm okay, I'm okay," Rui Rui shook her head vigorously like a rattle.
"Brother Qiu," Yang Yu managed to say his name before choking up. It was Zhang Qiu who sacrificed himself to protect her and all the Brothers. Otherwise, she would be stuck in a dark room too.
Zhang Qiu held Yang Yu's hand and asked, "Jiang Xue, do we have any leads?"
"We do, Brother Qiu."
A glimmer of excitement appeared in Zhang Qiu's eyes as he prepared to get up but was pressed back down by Wang Jinghan beside him. She scolded gently, "Stay still; don't move around."
"Yes, Brother Qiu, you should rest well," Yang Yu said. "Don't worry, the police have already been dispatched. Officer Blue has helped us a lot."
Zhang Qiu nodded and looked outside the door. Through the frosted glass, he could vaguely see two shadows. He turned back to Yang Yu and asked, "Who did this?"
Yang Yu hesitated. With Brother Qiu injured like this, should he really tell him? Zhang Qiu was impatient, gripping Yang Yu's hand tightly and asking, "Hurry up, tell me who did it."
"Brother Qiu, it was Liu Xiaolong," Yang Yu decided to tell Zhang Qiu. No matter what, he was the leader of this group and also his superior. The person who was kidnapped was Sister Zhang; he had no reason to hide it.
"Liu! Xiaolong!" Zhang Qiu's eyes ignited with anger as he suddenly sat up, causing the IV stand to shake. The police instinctively pointed at Zhang Qiu and shouted, "What are you doing!"
"What are you doing? Lie down quickly."
Wang Jinghan and Rui Rui each grabbed one side and forced Zhang Qiu back onto the bed. The blanket had already been pulled aside, exposing Zhang Qiu's bandaged upper body to the air. Rui Rui looked at the scars on Zhang Qiu's body and tears streamed down her cheeks. A woman must be so happy to have a man who would sacrifice so much for her.
The police glared angrily, but Liu Hua stepped in at the right moment to ease the tension and pulled the officer down to sit. At that moment, Wang Baoguo and Lan Ningshan also entered; they had not noticed what had just happened. Wang Baoguo waved to his apprentice and said, "Let's go; leave them here to watch over him."
The police glanced at Zhang Qiu before getting up to follow their master outside.
