Ye Xiaohan was unsure whether to believe it or if she was just afraid that asking too many questions would upset Liu Bei, so she refrained from probing further.
Liu Bei was more than happy to delay things as long as possible. Throughout their interactions, she had developed a bit of fondness for the Liu family; they were all genuinely kind-hearted and honest people.
Even Liu Yang, who had a sharp tongue, was just a brat with a heart of gold. Liu Qi was adorable, always circling around her legs, which was quite entertaining.
And then there was Liu Bei. Despite having to deal with someone like the original owner, who was a troublemaker, he still took care of her without holding any grudges. He truly was a good man. It made Ye Xiaohan wonder how the original owner could be so foolish as to ignore such a considerate husband and instead rummage through trash bins for other men.
Thinking back to that man the original owner had pursued, who reeked so badly he could repel mosquitoes, she shuddered involuntarily and quickly shook her arm as if trying to dispel that unpleasant image from her mind.
If it were me, I would definitely… what would I do? Ye Xiaohan paused, momentarily uncertain about her own thoughts. The image of Liu Bei's capable figure flashed before her eyes, and her cheeks flushed slightly.
“Ahem.” Feeling guilty, Ye Xiaohan cleared her throat and glanced around, relieved to find no one else present. Liu Bei lay in the room while Liu Yang and Liu Qi were crouched by the bed watching over him.
Having received a substantial sum of silver, they could temporarily set aside their worries about making ends meet. They had also taught those ungrateful villagers a lesson, which left the Liu family in high spirits. Liu Yang's attitude towards his sister-in-law had improved significantly.
Although he still occasionally threw some sarcastic remarks at her, his age made it difficult for him to hide his emotions; admiration for Ye Xiaohan shone in his eyes.
Such an obvious change in attitude did not escape Ye Xiaohan's notice. She maintained a calm exterior while secretly reveling in it for quite some time. After all, how could a mere brat get the better of her?
After dinner, Ye Xiaohan prepared some herbal medicine for Liu Bei to help restore his health. If she was going to play the part, she might as well commit fully; it would make everything seem more genuine. Besides, Liu Bei worked so hard; their family was already poor, and he rarely indulged himself in anything good, always saving it for his younger siblings.
As his savior, it was only right for her to help him regain his strength.
“Here, take this to your brother,” Ye Xiaohan said as she poured the medicinal liquid into a bowl and handed it to Liu Yang, who was eagerly eyeing the medicine pot.
Liu Yang looked at another pot with confusion. “What about this one? Is it also for my big brother? Why are there two pots? It seems wasteful and troublesome.”
In another jar was Ye Xiaohan's specially formulated weight-loss herbal medicine. She had tried it before and found it quite effective. This version had been improved further, making it even easier to absorb.
However, she wasn't ready to tell her family about this yet; explaining how she suddenly acquired such advanced medical skills would be too complicated.
"Go when I tell you to go. This medicine needs to be taken hot; if it cools down, it won't work. Your brother is still waiting," Ye Xiaohan said as she placed the bowl onto a tray and handed it to Liu Yang without saying anything more.
She had long figured out Liu Yang's weak spot; as long as it concerned his older brother, he would obediently comply.
Watching Liu Yang's steady back as he carried the bowl, Ye Xiaohan smiled with satisfaction.
The door opened, and Liu Bei instinctively looked up at the sound. Seeing Liu Yang, he glanced behind him but found no one there, feeling disappointed as he turned his gaze away.
"Brother, it's time for your medicine," Liu Yang said. He noticed Liu Bei's expression and realized that his brother was looking for Sister-in-law. His impression of Ye Xiaohan had changed significantly; he no longer held the same disdain as before.
If only Brother and Sister-in-law could live a peaceful life together. However, thinking about Ye Xiaohan's intention to leave made Liu Yang feel uneasy.
Liu Bei took the medicine with one hand while ruffling Liu Yang's hair with the other. "Thank you. As your older brother, I feel useless having to rely on you to take care of me when I'm actually fine."
"Brother, don't say that. If it weren't for you, Seven and I would have starved by now. In my heart, you're more capable than anyone else; those people just don't recognize your abilities."
Liu Yang pouted slightly. "I know you're fine; it's just that sister-in-law... that woman wants to trick those people outside. Just think of it as a rare vacation."
Seeing how mature his younger brother was at such a young age made Liu Bei feel a bit emotional. He patted Liu Yang's head again. Liu Yang felt a bit shy but didn't pull away, allowing his brother to continue.
Seven watched as Second Brother got his head patted and felt envious. Climbing down from the foot of the bed, he approached the two and tilted his head, saying, "I want my head patted too! Big Brother, pat Seven's head!"
The six brothers were amused, and Six Bei gently patted her, chuckling. Six Yang simply picked her up and hugged her tightly, the two of them tumbling around playfully.
"What’s going on? It’s so lively in here!" Ye Xiaohan had just finished her diet meal and walked into the room, surprised by the scene.
As soon as Qi saw her, she wriggled out of Six Yang's embrace and ran over to her, hugging one of her legs and looking up with a sweet smile, calling out, "Sister-in-law!"
During this time, Qi had been eating well and dressing beautifully. With Ye Xiaohan occasionally putting in some effort to help her improve, she had long shed her previous dirty appearance. Now she looked increasingly vibrant and plump, making one want to pinch her cheeks.
"Ah, Qi is so good," Ye Xiaohan said as she picked her up. Recently, Qi's health had improved significantly; she no longer gasped for breath just from holding a child.
Six Bei was momentarily stunned by her casual acknowledgment. His heart raced with excitement—was this an admission of her identity as his wife?
The longer they spent together, the more he felt an irresistible attraction towards her, a desire to be with her always.
Unconsciously, his heated gaze fell upon Ye Xiaohan as if it were tangible.
Ye Xiaohan seemed to sense it; she looked up just in time for their eyes to meet. It felt like a jolt to her, and she quickly turned away.
She didn’t notice Six Bei’s sudden disappointment.
Only Six Yang saw it; watching his older brother silently take his medicine, he could only glare at Ye Xiaohan unhappily.
Still lost in the fluster of that brief eye contact, Ye Xiaohan had no energy to care about the childish thoughts of the younger ones.
After a few peaceful days passed and the previous events settled down, Six Bei had successfully "recovered." Ye Xiaohan focused on preparing her diet prescriptions. Her original condition was too poor; it was simply that the original owner had been too reckless, leading to a weak body that needed proper care.
Ye Xiaohan was busy in the kitchen as usual when she heard someone knocking at the door.
Just then, Liu Yang and Qi were playing nearby. Ye Xiaohan glanced at Liu Yang and said, "Liu Yang, go see who is knocking. If it’s nothing important, just handle it casually. I don’t feel like dealing with them."
Liu Yang nodded, letting go of Qi, and ran to the front to open the door. He actually hoped that Ye Xiaohan wouldn’t have to go out and interact with anyone; it would be best if she stayed at home all the time, only spending time with his older brother.
"Who are you?" Liu Yang asked as he looked at Aunt Zhang, who appeared quite ordinary but had a sharpness in her eyes. Even though her face was plastered with an exaggerated smile, it did not evoke any sense of warmth.
The woman sized Liu Yang up and forced a high-pitched laugh. "Hey there, young man, where's your elder? I have a good business opportunity for you that I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear about."
As she spoke, she pushed past Liu Yang and attempted to enter the house.
Liu Yang stumbled back slightly from the shove and quickly blocked her way. "Who exactly are you? My elder is very busy. If you have something to say, say it to me."
"You?" Aunt Zhang looked him over with disdain in her eyes. However, since Liu Yang was blocking her way and she didn’t want to create a scene, she rolled her eyes and smiled. "Alright then, I’ll talk to you."
With a sneer on her face, she continued, "Your family has hit the jackpot! Didn’t your older brother buy an ugly woman before? What a mess that turned out to be! Oh dear, what terrible luck!"
Hearing Aunt Zhang speak ill of Ye Xiaohan made Liu Yang's impression of her even worse. While Ye Xiaohan had indeed done some unpleasant things in the past, that was all behind her now; she had changed.
He interrupted her rudely, "These matters are our family affairs and don’t concern you, Aunt Zhang. Please leave if there’s nothing else." He began to close the door.
"Hey, wait! Don’t!" The woman exclaimed in a panic as she saw him trying to dismiss her. "I’m here to bring you good fortune! A customer is interested in that ugly woman and is willing to pay fifty taels of silver!"
