Ye Xiaohan's predictions were spot on; it wasn't long before the Human Trafficker returned.
As soon as the Human Trafficker spoke, he showered her with compliments: "Miss Ye is truly fortunate. The master has agreed to spend one hundred taels to buy you. Oh, this must be a blessing from your past life! Hurry up and pack your things; we need to leave immediately. There are people waiting for us."
"Well," Ye Xiaohan hesitated. She wanted to leave, but at the very least, she needed to speak with Liu Beidao privately.
Moreover, the buyer's background was unclear. If she rushed over without preparation, it would be reckless.
Ye Xiaohan smiled and said, "Aunt Zhang, this deal is already set in stone; it's a mutual agreement that can't be avoided. However, as you can see, the head of the Liu family is not here right now. I must at least inform him first. Why don't you come back tomorrow morning? That way, we can settle everything conveniently."
The Human Trafficker couldn't make decisions on his own and went back to seek approval. When he returned, he confirmed that it was agreed upon.
Ye Xiaohan's actions were also a test; she wanted to gauge the other party's attitude. The more tolerant they were, the greater their intentions—or schemes—might be, which made them all the more suspicious.
After sending off the Human Trafficker, Ye Xiaohan returned to the kitchen where Liu Qi was wide-eyed and sparkling with anticipation, clearly seeking praise.
Ye Xiaohan took a piece of cake and placed it in her hand, praising her: "Qi is so good for keeping an eye on the stove."
Liu Qi squinted her eyes and nodded repeatedly: "Qi is good; I didn't run around."
Not knowing what had happened outside earlier, Ye Xiaohan had asked Liu Qi to stay in the kitchen and not go out. As she stroked the soft little head, a sudden wave of reluctance washed over her.
Quickly, she pushed that feeling aside.
Liu Yang had been gone for a while now, and Ye Xiaohan felt a bit worried. However, considering this was his hometown village, nothing serious should happen. Besides, Liu Yang was clever enough; as long as he didn't cause trouble for others, everything would be fine.
Ye Xiaohan prepared some self-defense items, determined to find out who her opponent was and what their intentions might be.
No matter what, it was a dream to think they could take advantage of her.
As dusk fell, Ye Xiaohan planned to make dinner when she heard a noise outside; it was Lubei returning, followed by a dejected Liu Yang.
Lubei set down the bamboo basket on his back, revealing several rabbits and a mountain chicken inside. He took out the mountain chicken and asked, "Xiao Han, how about we make chicken soup tonight? You like that, right?"
Having caught a few before, Ye Xiaohan thought it was delicious and had eaten every bit. Lubei remembered this and tried to catch more. The mountain chicken was agile and harder to catch than rabbits, but for his wife, Lubei was more than willing to put in the effort.
However, as Ye Xiaohan thought about leaving tomorrow, even the mountain chicken she usually loved seemed less appealing. She glanced at Liu Yang, who was hesitating behind Lubei, and responded absently.
"What's wrong?" Lubei immediately sensed her subtle change in mood. He noticed her usually vibrant eyes had dimmed, like pearls covered in dust. A sharp pang of pain pricked at his heart.
Ye Xiaohan avoided his concerned gaze, steering clear of eye contact.
After gathering her thoughts, she spoke up. "There's something I wanted to tell you." Before anyone else could interject, she quickly recounted the situation regarding Bai.
"So that's how it is. Ming Ren Ya Zi is coming to pick me up and will bring the silver with him. You keep this money as a repayment for saving me before," Ye Xiaohan concluded.
Lubei stood there in disbelief, frozen in place. He stared at Ye Xiaohan, recalling how they had been a happy family just that morning. He had gone hunting joyfully, hoping to make her happy again, only to find everything had changed in such a short time.
"You’re leaving?" Lubei's voice suddenly turned hoarse. "During this time, you stopped hating me like before. I thought we were starting over... Was all of this just my illusion?"
Ye Xiaohan was momentarily speechless by his question. It was evident that 6 Bei was heartbroken, which made her feel inexplicably guilty. She had never promised to stay, nor did she have any reason to do so.
Steeling herself, Ye Xiaohan looked up and said, "I will leave sooner or later; I have never hidden that fact. I have done many things wrong to you in the past, and it's only natural for you to dislike me. This time, let's just end it."
"I disagree!" 6 Bei gasped heavily. "You are my wife; no one can sell you off. This matter is not negotiable!"
Ye Xiaohan felt her emotions become complicated by his words. She replied softly, "Don't say that. Let's part on good terms; if fate allows, we can meet again and still be friends."
6 Bei looked at her, his eyes slightly red. Even he didn't understand why he felt so agitated. The thought of Ye Xiaohan leaving and being far away, unable to see her again, shattered his usual calm demeanor.
He repeated each word with conviction: "You are my wife. Beyond that, I don't want any other kind of relationship."
Ye Xiaohan was drawn in by the intense emotion in his eyes, as if she were being pulled into an endless whirlpool, unable to break free. She stared at him in silence.
6 Yang observed the unusual behavior of the two, especially his older brother, whose entire demeanor had shifted from his usual self to that of a ferocious beast ready to attack. Alarmed, he quickly stepped forward and grabbed 6 Bei's arm, calling out, "Big Brother! Wake up!"
Upon hearing the voice, 6 Bei shifted his gaze to 6 Yang, his fierce look sending a shiver down 6 Yang's spine.
"Did you take it upon yourself to sell your sister-in-law?" 6 Bei's sudden calm question did nothing to ease the tension; it felt like the calm before a storm.
"I-I..." Half frightened by 6 Bei and half guilty for having previously suggested getting rid of Ye Xiaohan, 6 Yang stammered and faltered.
To 6 Bei, this was an admission of guilt.
"Big Brother always thought you were a sensible child, but I never expected you to be so narrow-minded. Just because your sister-in-law made a few mistakes in the past, she has already changed, yet you still hold a grudge and refuse to forgive her. Now you even plan to sell her to a human trafficker!"
Li Bei looked at Li Yang with heartache. "It's Big Brother's failure to teach you well, bringing shame to the Li family, leading you down a twisted path and making you commit the despicable act of selling your sister-in-law for wealth!"
Li Yang was frightened by Li Bei's words and stammered an explanation, "No, I didn't, Big Brother, please listen to me..."
"Kneel!" Li Bei shouted angrily, pulling out a piece of firewood. "Today, I will teach you a good lesson for the Li family and show you the principles of being a person!"
Seeing Li Bei's fury, Li Yang dared not dodge. Fearful and resigned, he knelt on the ground, tears welling up in his eyes as he desperately tried to hold them back.
Li Bei raised the firewood, ready to strike. Li Yang closed his eyes tightly, gritting his teeth.
The expected pain did not come. Li Yang opened his eyes and looked up. He saw Ye Xiaohan with an angry expression, forcefully grabbing Li Bei's arm. Stopped by her, Li Bei froze in place, his hand suspended in mid-air.
Ye Xiaohan pushed Li Bei hard. "With such strength, if you really hit him, wouldn't you beat him half to death? What kind of grudge do you have? You can be so ruthless to your own brother! Look at how scared Qi is!"
Li Qi saw her elder brother about to hit Second Brother and was tearful on the side, wanting to cry but afraid to do so. She clung to Ye Xiaohan's leg and wouldn't let go, her big eyes darting between Lu Bei and Li Yang.
She snatched the firewood away and tossed it aside. "If I want to leave, it's my own decision. Even without Li Yang, things would be the same; you don't need to blame him. Besides, it's normal for him to dislike me for my past actions. I'm not a saint; I won't just turn the other cheek after being slapped on one side."
"What saint?" Li Bei was taken aback by her sudden outburst and asked in confusion.
She was too agitated and accidentally used modern terminology. Ye Xiaohan secretly stuck out her tongue, relieved that Li Bei was easy to deal with and could be brushed off with casual remarks.
After being scolded by her, Liu Bei calmed down but still felt angry. "This is all Liu Yang's fault. He can still be taught, but if we let him run wild, it will only get worse. How will I face the ancestors of the Liu family then?"
Liu Yang was surprised that Ye Xiaohan would come to his rescue, feeling deeply moved. The Sister-in-law before him was no longer the bad woman he once thought; her changes were evident to anyone. He really shouldn't doubt her or say those hurtful things that might drive her away.
Seeing that Liu Bei was no longer as furious as before, the pressure on Liu Yang's back lightened significantly. He was no longer so afraid and quickly explained, "Big Brother, I don't dislike Sister-in-law, nor do I want to sell her."
His words made both of them pause. Liu Bei was somewhat skeptical; he had noticed Liu Yang's hostility towards Ye Xiaohan in the past. Ye Xiaohan, on the other hand, was simply surprised.
"Really!" Liu Yang hurriedly expressed his sincerity. "I was worried that Sister-in-law would leave, and in my panic, I said those things. That wasn't my intention at all. In fact, I really like our current life and hope that you and Sister-in-law are well. I want our family to be safe and sound."
Liu Bei was touched by his heartfelt words, his anger gradually dissipating. He hadn't expected his younger brother to care so much about him and hoped for a smooth relationship with Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan asked in confusion, "Then why did you agree to the Human Trafficker?"
Liu Yang gritted his teeth and replied, "That Human Trafficker is out of line! I didn't agree to anything; she just assumed I wanted those fifty taels of silver for herself. Ugh, does she think everyone is as shallow as she is?"
Now it made sense. Ye Xiaohan recalled the situation at that time; the Human Trafficker's words had led her to misunderstand Liu Yang, further provoking him without any clear explanation from either side.
Liu Bei also understood the twists and turns of the situation and realized he had wronged Liu Yang. He quickly pulled him up. "You child, since it was a misunderstanding, why didn't you clarify? You almost took an unnecessary beating. It's my fault for losing my temper without understanding the situation."
"No, it's not your fault, Big Brother; it's my misunderstanding," Liu Yang quickly shook his head. He didn't blame his brother at all and quietly swallowed any thoughts about how frightening his brother could be when angry.
