Liu Yuan quietly calculated in his heart. Although he did not know the details behind Ye Xiaohan's ignorance of the situation, it presented him with an excellent opportunity.
Suppressing the malice within him, he knew he could not reveal his next move just yet. Liu Yuan stepped back a little to let Ye Xiaohan pass.
"It was just a joke. Why is Boss Ye so anxious?"
Liu Yuan opened his fan, made of fine Nanmu wood, with an exquisite surface painted with a landscape in light ink. To anyone unaware, his elegant appearance could easily deceive them.
However, no matter how refined he looked, to Ye Xiaohan, he was merely a beast in human skin. Cold-blooded and insidious—these were the labels Liu Yuan carried in her mind, and they were stuck there with a powerful adhesive that would never come off.
"Young Master Liu's jokes are not something an ordinary person can bear. I do not have the honor to hear them now or ever!" Ye Xiaohan retorted sharply. All she wanted was to leave quickly and avoid being tainted by his presence.
Yet she wouldn’t be the one to suggest leaving first; if she did, Liu Yuan might think she was truly afraid of him!
With malicious intentions brewing inside him, Liu Yuan was unwilling to continue entangling himself with Ye Xiaohan at that moment. He intended to reclaim everything he had lost and what others owed him.
In his mind, everything he set his sights on should rightfully belong to him. Thus, for Liu Yuan, it was always others who wronged him; he never felt he owed anyone anything.
"Boss Ye has been in confinement for so long. Fortunately, this time you have been blessed to come out intact. I am relieved for you," Liu Yuan said with a gesture inviting her to leave.
"You should head home soon. It’s quite unusual for someone just released from prison to cling to me like this. While I am naturally pleased, it does put me in a difficult position. If others see us together and rumors spread, it might be hard for you to explain later."
The thickness of his skin truly rivaled leather! Ye Xiaohan thought that every time she learned more about Liu Yuan, her worldview was challenged anew.
She took a step back as well and gestured with her hand. "Young Master Liu is truly 'wise and brave.' I have always sincerely admired you from the bottom of my heart. How could I dare walk ahead of you? Please, after you."
Her words sounded like ordinary praise and humility, but facing Liu Yuan, both understood the underlying meaning—each harbored their own thoughts while maintaining a facade of politeness.
Liu Yuan swaggered away, fanning himself as he went. Ye Xiaohan suppressed the urge to kick him away and turned toward home.
On her way back, she spotted Yang and the others still waiting for her. As soon as they saw Ye Xiaohan approaching, they gathered around her.
"Where's that bastard?" Liu Yang asked, not seeing Liu Yuan. He knew he had left, but still felt the need to ask, worried that the man might suddenly reappear.
Ye Xiaohan turned his head back from peering around. "He's gone and won't be coming back. There's no need to look anymore. Let's go home."
"Okay!" Liu Yang's attention shifted immediately as he excitedly pushed her along. "Hurry up, let's go!"
Liu Qi also grabbed Ye Xiaohan's hand and ran forward, laughing non-stop.
Their home was in chaos. Although she was still there, the adults were deliberately keeping things from her, preventing her from hearing their discussions. Yet deep down, she sensed that something bad had happened. Especially with her older brother and sister-in-law missing, it felt very strange.
To avoid distracting the adults further and to spare them from worrying about her, Liu Qi behaved particularly well. Still, she couldn't shake off the worries and fears that lingered in her heart.
Now that she finally saw Ye Xiaohan again, all the anxiety of recent days vanished. Liu Qi regained her energy, bouncing around like a rabbit that couldn't sit still.
Ye Xiaohan was pulled back to the house by them. When they reached the entrance, she was about to go in when Liu Yang stopped her.
"Sister-in-law, wait here for me for a moment!"
Before Ye Xiaohan could ask what was going on, Liu Yang dashed inside, leaving her puzzled as she looked at Li Yi.
"Boss Ye, just a moment please. It will be ready soon," Li Yi said with a smile. Just then, Liu Yang emerged carrying something.
As he got closer, Ye Xiaohan realized that Liu Yang was holding a fire basin.
Liu Yang placed the fire basin at the door and said to Ye Xiaohan, "It's ready now, sister-in-law. Step over it to burn away any bad luck for a peaceful future!"
Ye Xiaohan knew about this custom of using a fire basin to ward off misfortune; she just hadn't paid much attention to it at the moment. She didn't expect Liu Yang to be so thoughtful and even prepare this for her.
Until the court session concluded, the outcome remained uncertain. Despite having the assistance of the Flying Dragon General and possessing evidence, everything was still subject to sudden changes.
The fire pit did not ignite instantly; it must have been prepared before they left, which is why it could be taken out so quickly now.
This gesture moved Ye Xiaohan deeply.
She patted Liu Yang on the shoulder and said to everyone, "Thank you. Because of my situation, I've dragged you all into this."
Before she could finish, a series of rebuttals erupted.
Liu Yang was the first to express his dissatisfaction, "Sister-in-law, your matters are our matters. There's no question of dragging anyone down. Don't say that again."
Li Yi added, "Ye Boss, you're being too polite. It's only right for me to lend a hand for Ye Boss."
At this point, further politeness would feel insincere. Ye Xiaohan smiled and kept this bond in her heart, remembering the moment's warmth.
"I'm going to jump over!" Ye Xiaohan announced loudly as she stood before the fire pit, then gracefully leaped over it. She turned elegantly, placing her left hand behind her back and her right hand in front of her waist, stepping forward with her left leg in a bowing gesture.
Liu Yang and Liu Qi stood in a row applauding. Round looked at them curiously and was pulled over by Liu Qi, awkwardly joining in the applause.
"Sister-in-law, today Mr. Li Yi and I will cook for you to welcome you back!" Liu Yang moved the fire pit aside and dragged Li Yi toward the kitchen, adamantly refusing to let Ye Xiaohan help.
With nothing else to do, Ye Xiaohan returned to her room to freshen up. After spending so long in the cell that she felt like she was growing moss, even when the Flying Dragon General sent someone in later, it was impossible for her to take a satisfying hot bath.
Almost tempted to linger in the tub forever, Ye Xiaohan shook off her longing for hot water and opened her door feeling refreshed.
Liu Yang and the others had already prepared a feast and were waiting for her—a large table filled with all her favorite dishes.
Seeing the spread before her, Ye Xiaohan's stomach, which had felt indifferent before, suddenly began to rumble with hunger. "So much delicious food! Thank you to our chefs! Come on, everyone, let's eat together."
Liu Qi cheered and pulled Round up onto the stool beside Ye Xiaohan, eagerly waiting for her to start eating so she could dig in as well.
"All you do is eat!" Liu Yang laughed as he shot a playful glare at Liu Qi. "Today is specially prepared for Sister-in-law, and all the meat is for her. You can only have this."
He picked up a chopstick full of vibrant green chives from the scrambled eggs and placed it into Liu Qi's bowl, grinning mischievously. "Hurry up and eat; if you don't, it means you're not giving Sister-in-law face!"
Liu Qi was not picky with food; she generally ate whatever was given to her. The only vegetable she rarely liked was chives, which Liu Yang often used to tease her.
"Sister-in-law, look at Second Brother—what a rascal!" Liu Qi immediately complained to Ye Xiaohan. She couldn't handle this troublemaker Second Brother herself, but she knew who could put him in his place!
Ye Xiaohan tapped Liu Yang on the head with her chopsticks, scolding him playfully. "You really are a big brother, always picking on Qi."
She casually picked the chives out of Liu Qi's bowl and placed them into Liu Yang's. "As the older brother, you should set a good example for your sister!"
"Ew~" Liu Yang actually didn't like chives much either, just like Liu Qi. However, he prided himself on being a man and didn't show it too obviously; he forced himself to eat them every time.
He thought he was hiding it well, but the whole Liu family knew.
To demonstrate his role as an exemplary older brother, Liu Yang swallowed the chives whole without chewing them properly.
Seeing him struggle made Liu Qi happy; she let out a loud hum to mock him.
This drew laughter from everyone around the table. The meal stretched on for quite some time, filled with joy and satisfaction.
