After Liu Susu unleashed a torrent of insults at Ye Xiaohan, Gu Bei's last shred of calm was completely consumed by her outburst, prompting him to reprimand her.
His words were harsh, and even Liu Susu, known for her willfulness, felt her face flush with shame. It was as if he was accusing her of failing to honor her parents as a daughter and being unfaithful to her husband as a wife; two grave accusations that would likely leave her unable to hold her head high for the rest of her life.
"Gu Bei! You!" Liu Susu was so furious that she was left speechless, never imagining that one day she would be so thoroughly chastised by the usually taciturn Gu Bei.
She was both angry and anxious, but Gu Bei's status and strength were not something she could afford to offend. The usual tactics of scolding and hitting subordinates were useless now; she could only stand there, gasping for breath.
Gu Bei ignored her completely, giving the butler a brief instruction before leaving. He feared that if he stayed any longer in Liu Susu's presence, he wouldn't be able to maintain his composure.
As soon as the butler saw Gu Bei leave, he stepped forward and said, "Second Young Mistress, please this way!"
Seeing Liu Susu take a tumble at the hands of the young master brought the butler some satisfaction. As a servant, he couldn't show disrespect to his master, but this woman was increasingly irksome to him.
Having been scolded by Gu Bei and then treated coldly by the servants of the General's residence, Liu Susu felt an unimaginable humiliation in her life.
Throughout the journey back home, Liu Susu remained in a daze until she finally returned to her familiar surroundings. Only then did she begin to process what had happened.
"I'm so furious! I'm so furious!" Liu Susu stomped on the flowers and plants along the way, trampling and plucking them until they were left in tatters.
The maids were terrified, fearing that their already enraged mistress would unleash her fury upon them.
As if summoned by their fears, Liu Susu suddenly halted in her tracks. She raised her hand to her face; she had just brushed against a Cloudwood Fragrance plant and had pricked herself on its thorns, drawing a drop of blood.
This only fueled her anger further as she shouted at the maids, "Are you all dead? With so many of you around, not one is useful! Can't you serve someone properly? Are your eyes blind? Can't you see I've been hurt? Hurry up and fetch a doctor!"
"Yes! Yes! I will go right away!" The maid dared not retort and hurriedly left to find a doctor to treat Liu Susu's injuries.
The remaining servants, who had not run fast enough, were even more fearful, trembling as they awaited the next wave of Liu Susu's anger. Based on their experience serving her for so long, they concluded that it would be impossible to calm her down so quickly.
"What happened? Who made you angry this time?"
Just as the servants were quaking in fear, a voice came from the side, momentarily bringing Liu Susu back to her senses.
However, the temporarily relieved servants did not dare to relax; instead, they remained terrified because they all knew that the person who had arrived was not easy to deal with either.
Upon hearing the question, Liu Susu's figure visibly paused for a moment before she turned around and greeted the person, "Husband."
It turned out that this person was none other than Liu Susu's husband, Gu Family's second young master, Gu Bei's younger brother, Gu Rong.
Gu Rong glanced at the servants and then looked at the chaotic garden with an indifferent expression. He smiled and said, "Whoever lacks insight to provoke my wife like this should just tell me. Let me help you vent your anger."
Under normal circumstances, Liu Susu would not take Gu Rong's words to heart. Their relationship had been strained for quite some time; even if Gu Rong spoke sweetly, Liu Susu would not truly believe that he cared for her.
But today, she was genuinely furious and did not care whether Gu Rong was being sincere or just speaking casually; she simply wanted to vent her frustration.
"Who else could it be but your dear brother!" Liu Susu gritted her teeth and said, "I kindly went to remind him, but instead of being grateful, he repaid kindness with malice and scolded me! Truly, no good deed goes unpunished!"
"Oh? Is that so?" Gu Rong asked in surprise. "Although he has always been arrogant and dismissive of others, he has been kind to you since childhood. What could have prompted him to scold you this time?"
Liu Susu recalled the reason Gu Bei had scolded her, and her anger flared even more: "It's all because of that woman! That Ye Xiaohan, she stole someone else's shop and refuses to return it, causing all sorts of trouble!"
Gu Bei was being so harsh with her over a woman who was obsessed with money; it was truly ungrateful of him.
Gu Rong asked in confusion, "Since when does Gu Bei have a romantic interest? Isn't he always focused on military affairs and indifferent to matters of the heart?"
As if reminiscing about the past, Gu Rong chuckled, "I remember you used to chase after him all the time. He was so bothered by it that he even went to stay in the military camp for two months. At that time, you were still engaged, and he treated you like that; he certainly hasn't shown any affection towards other women."
Gu Bei had never been close to other women, which Liu Susu had always taken pride in. His lack of interest in others and his focus solely on her made it clear that her charm surpassed that of any other woman!
But now, reminded inadvertently by Gu Rong, she suddenly realized something. Back then, Gu Bei hadn't really cared for her all that much. The only difference between her and other women was that she had an engagement!
Without that engagement, Gu Bei would likely have treated her no differently than any other woman.
After many years, coming to this realization left Liu Susu feeling a chill in her heart, followed by an endless rage.
She had thought she had conquered a strong general, but it turned out she had merely been deluding herself! All these years, she had taken pride in this illusion, only to find out that to others, she was nothing but a joke!
For a moment, Liu Susu struggled to find words to express her feelings and couldn't articulate the turmoil within her. One thing became increasingly clear in her heart: the grudge between her and Gu Bei was firmly established.
Seeing Liu Susu silent and pale, Gu Rong asked with concern, "Madam, why do you look so unwell? Are you feeling ill? You should go rest in your room; I'll call for a doctor."
"No need," Liu Susu replied calmly, sounding completely different from her earlier fury. "I'm fine. I'm better than I've ever been!"
Gu Rong looked worried and said, "Did I say something wrong? Madam, please don't be angry; it will only harm your health, and we care for you. I believe my brother isn't the type to cover up for anyone. There might be a misunderstanding here. How about I accompany you to talk things over again? Let's sit down and clarify everything."
"What good will that do?" Liu Susu scoffed. "He is indeed protective of her. That Ye Xiaohan is his treasure. We outsiders are nothing compared to her; the great general wouldn't even spare us a glance!"
Gu Rong quickly tried to reassure her, "Don't say that. My brother isn't someone who easily forgets old friendships for a woman he just met."
"He is!" Liu Susu shouted sharply. "What great general? He's just someone who forgets his interests for beauty! I won't go back to humiliate myself. Since he doesn't want to see me, why should I embarrass myself further?"
"Gu Bei, Ye Xiaohan, you two shameless lovers have made me lose all face! Don't think you can live happily!"
Beneath Liu Susu's calm exterior, a volcano of anger seemed ready to erupt at any moment.
Watching Liu Susu storm back to her room, Gu Rong's gentle demeanor vanished completely, replaced by a sarcastic smile.
"Gu Bei, Gu Bei, did you ever think that a woman who is utterly devoted to you would turn cold towards you?" Gu Rong muttered to himself. "Someone like you doesn't deserve companionship. Being shunned by everyone is the life that suits you best!"
Without looking back, he addressed someone behind him, "You did well this time; go to the accounts room and collect your reward."
The person was dressed in the attire of a servant from the Gu Family and was likely one of their servants. Hearing Gu Rong's generous offer, he beamed with joy and repeatedly thanked him, "Thank you, young master! I will do my utmost in serving you; please rest assured!"
Gu Rong smiled and said, "Oh, no need for such formality. I always reward merit. Your idea was excellent—setting up the maidservant to ambush Liu Susu as she passed by and leaking information about Ye Xiaohan to her made her our first strike!"
