"Who are you, and why are you blocking my way?" Ye Xiaohan asked, noticing that these people held her portrait, clearly indicating they were after her.
Upon hearing her words, the group seemed to realize something and took a step back.
"We are subordinates of the Grand General, sent to find Miss Ye. We did not mean to frighten you; please forgive us," the leader replied on behalf of the group.
What is he talking about?
"Aren't you sent by Liu Susu? Are you Gu Bei's men?" Ye Xiaohan asked in surprise. Seeing their fierce expressions, she initially thought they meant her harm, but it turned out to be just their appearance.
After all, Gu Bei's subordinates were mostly from the military camp, and they did carry a certain intimidating aura.
However, caution was necessary, especially after what had happened yesterday; she wanted to maintain a sense of vigilance about everything.
"You say you're Gu Bei's men—where's your proof?" Before seeing any solid evidence, Ye Xiaohan decided to remain skeptical of every word they said.
The leader said, "Miss Ye, there's no need to be nervous; we truly are not bad people. We can't provide evidence right now, but the Grand General is nearby. We have already sent a message to him, and he will be here shortly."
"Gu Bei is coming too?" Hearing their somewhat convincing words made Ye Xiaohan start to believe them a little.
At that moment, she heard hurried footsteps and familiar shouts behind her.
"Xiao Han!"
"Sister-in-law!"
Turning around, Ye Xiaohan saw Gu Bei and Liu Yang rushing toward her in a hurry. They were running so fast that a branch struck Gu Bei's face. Without even raising his hand, he charged forward and wrapped his arms around Ye Xiaohan.
The force of Gu Bei's embrace knocked Ye Xiaohan back slightly; fortunately, he held her tightly enough to prevent her from falling.
"Gu Bei, let go a bit; my ribs are going to break!" Ye Xiaohan managed to squeeze out those words through gritted teeth. What had Gu Bei eaten that made him so incredibly strong?
Hearing Ye Xiaohan's pained voice seemed to bring Gu Bei back to his senses as he loosened his grip on her.
"Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" Gu Bei asked anxiously, finally noticing the tattered state of Ye Xiaohan's clothes. He quickly took off his outer robe and wrapped it around her.
"Are you okay?" Gu Bei's eyes were red, filled with both anger and concern. He was furious that those thugs dared to lay a hand on Ye Xiaohan, and his heart ached for the unwarranted suffering she had endured.
Seeing Ye Xiaohan in such a disheveled state, he didn't even want to ask what had happened.
"I'm fine, just really hungry," Ye Xiaohan replied.
Noticing Gu Bei's worry, she felt a warm glow in her heart; she knew he would come back to save her.
"Huh? Oh! You're hungry!" Gu Bei was caught off guard by Ye Xiaohan's sudden shift in focus. He hadn't expected her first words to be about food.
Fortunately, he had come fully prepared, bringing along some provisions that were her favorite.
"Wow, you even brought biscuits!" Ye Xiaohan exclaimed as she grabbed a biscuit and stuffed it into her mouth, surprised. "Are you here to rescue me or to have a picnic?"
Liu Yang laughed from the side. "Sister-in-law, you've got it all wrong! Big Brother was worried you wouldn't have anything to eat. He figured you'd be starving by the time we found you, so he brought these for you!"
Now that they had found Ye Xiaohan and confirmed she was mostly unharmed, Liu Yang felt a weight lift from his heart and was able to relax.
"Sister-in-law, we were so scared when we heard you were missing!" Liu Yang reached for a biscuit as well. "I haven't eaten in a long time either. I didn't feel hungry before, but now I'm suddenly starving."
When people are under stress, they often overlook their physical needs.
Ye Xiaohan patted Liu Yang on the back, touched. "You really do care about me."
"Of course," Liu Yang said proudly, lifting his chin. Then he brushed off the crumbs that had fallen onto his clothes from where Ye Xiaohan had patted him. "Sister-in-law, could you finish eating before praising me? The crumbs are all over my shirt!"
Feeling teased by Liu Yang's complaint, Ye Xiaohan pretended to wipe the crumbs on him, causing Liu Yang to quickly laugh and hide behind Gu Bei.
Watching them play around eased much of the tension in Gu Bei's heart. Ye Xiaohan appeared to be in a bit of disarray but seemed not to have sustained any serious injuries.
"Xiao Han, are you really okay? I brought the Military Doctor; let him take a look at you."
Still feeling uneasy, Gu Bei decided it would be best for the Military Doctor to examine Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan clapped her hands, brushing off the crumbs from the biscuits, and said, "No need, I'm not hurt. I just got a bit hungry since I hadn't eaten anything; I've already taken care of it."
She pointed at the food box and let out a satisfied burp.
"What happened to your hand?" Gu Bei asked as he extended his hand. He noticed several scrapes on her hand, with a deeper wound in the palm where the blood had been cleaned away, revealing raw flesh.
Ye Xiaohan looked down and replied, "Oh, this? I must have scraped it while rolling around on the ground; I don't even remember when it happened."
She clearly remembered the wound on her palm; it was from cutting rope with a stone and accidentally slicing her hand.
"It's just some scratches; they'll heal up fine with some ointment," Ye Xiaohan said nonchalantly. She had checked earlier and confirmed that none of the injuries affected her nerves, so her fingers would still function normally.
As for the scars, she planned to use some medicine later to minimize them; they shouldn't leave any significant marks.
However, Gu Bei clearly thought differently. He looked at Ye Xiaohan's wounds with barely contained anger that seemed ready to boil over.
Under Gu Bei's insistence, Ye Xiaohan reluctantly accepted treatment from the Military Doctor. To be honest, while the Military Doctor's medicine was effective for healing wounds, it couldn't compare to what Ye Xiaohan made herself.
Seeing Gu Bei's deep concern for her, Ye Xiaohan decided to endure this well-meaning gesture.
"By the way, how did you all find me here?"
Although she was glad they arrived quickly, it was almost miraculous how fast Gu Bei and the others managed to come to her rescue.
Gu Bei gently held Ye Xiaohan's hand in his own. She tried to pull away but didn't succeed, so she let him hold it. His warm palm gave her a sense of having finally come back to life.
"Last night you didn't come home, so Liu Yang went looking for you. On the way, he found out you had been kidnapped," Gu Bei explained as he recounted what happened next. "Then Liu Yang came to find me, and I sent people out who tracked down those thugs who kidnapped you."
Gu Bei didn’t elaborate on what methods he used to get information from those thugs about Ye Xiaohan. Seeing his expression, she instinctively felt it was better not to ask.
"After that, I took my people and followed the route provided by those thugs. But by the time we arrived, you were already gone from the house."
Calculating the time, Ye Xiaohan should have been chased by the men in black back then. She rolled her eyes silently in her heart, deciding it was better not to describe the perilous situation in detail.
"I couldn't find you, so I had to disperse our forces and try to widen the search area. Later, we found the bodies of those Masked Figures."
Gu Bei's voice grew heavy as he tightened his grip on Ye Xiaohan's hand unconsciously, as if trying to release the fear within him, or perhaps to reassure himself that Ye Xiaohan was safe beside him at that moment.
Ye Xiaohan reached out with her other hand and placed it over Gu Bei's, saying, "It's okay, it's okay, don't be afraid."
She comforted Gu Bei, even though he didn't use vivid words to describe the turmoil in his heart at that time; she could feel his panic.
Suddenly, Gu Bei exerted strength and pulled Ye Xiaohan tightly into his embrace, holding her as if he wanted to embed her completely into his body.
"When I saw those bodies and the blood on the ground, I thought... I thought..." Gu Bei couldn't continue, his voice trembling slightly.
Ye Xiaohan wrapped her arms around Gu Bei's back and gently patted him, reassuring him, "Don't be afraid. I'm fine. That blood isn't mine; I'm still alive and waiting for you to save me."
"Yeah!" Gu Bei seemed to blame himself a little. "If only I had found you a bit earlier, you wouldn't have had to worry."
Oh dear, he was starting to dwell on it again. When would he learn to stop taking all the responsibility for everything that went wrong in his life?
"Xiao Han," Gu Bei loosened his grip slightly and looked into Ye Xiaohan's eyes seriously. "I care for you."
