After having taught two lessons, Ye Xiaohan turned her attention to Gu Bei once more.
It was absolutely impossible for him to escape under her watchful eyes.
"Why have you been coming over so often lately? Are you that free?" Ye Xiaohan felt a deep concern for the emperor of this dynasty; both the prince and the general seemed to have too much time on their hands. Was there really no problem with that?
Gu Bei was busy.
He had been missing for over a year, and now that he had regained military power, there were many matters awaiting his attention. However, he had indeed visited Ye Xiaohan's residence more frequently than before, which explained why she felt she had seen him too often lately.
Ever since Gu Bei realized his feelings for Ye Xiaohan when she was kidnapped and nearly faced danger, he had come to understand his own heart.
Once he recognized his affection for Ye Xiaohan, the emotions within him surged even more intensely. In the past, he had not understood it and would think of her at any moment, but he had forcibly suppressed those feelings.
Now, just thinking about her made his heart race, and he could not bear the feeling of being away from her.
Thus, Gu Bei worked tirelessly to resolve official matters quickly. Whenever he had free time, he would come here; even if it was just to watch her, it brought him a sense of satisfaction.
Moreover, since he had not spent time with the six siblings for a while, this opportunity allowed him to bond with them as well.
Gu Bei did not hide his intentions; he laid them bare before Ye Xiaohan.
Although he had no interest in broadcasting his feelings to everyone, he would not shy away either.
Having confirmed that Ye Xiaohan was his true love in this life, he would persist until she could accept him.
"I want to spend more time with you all, just like before."
Those days of anonymity became unforgettable happiness because of Ye Xiaohan and the six siblings.
Even if Gu Bei did not say it outright, Ye Xiaohan could see it in his gentle gaze. Gu Bei had changed significantly lately; it was as if he had been transformed entirely, capable of expressing even the most sentimental words.
It truly is a case of not judging a book by its cover; how had she never noticed before that he was this kind of person?
"Do as you wish. Your legs are your own; who could stop you if you want to come?"
Ye Xiaohan knew that even if she opposed him, Gu Bei would not give up. Moreover, every time she saw the serious look in Gu Bei's eyes, she found herself unable to voice her refusal, the words stuck in her throat.
Gu Bei did not expect her to accept him immediately. He was not in a hurry; he had a lifetime to wait. Eventually, he would get Ye Xiaohan's nod of approval.
Unfortunately, Gu Bei was simply too busy, and his free time was limited. It felt like he had just stolen a few glances at Ye Xiaohan when it was already time for him to leave.
"I have to go now. I'll come back to see you tomorrow," Gu Bei said reluctantly as he steeled himself to say goodbye to Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan thought that Gu Bei's constant comings and goings were exhausting and suggested that he could visit less often and save some time to rest properly.
Of course, Gu Bei ignored this suggestion.
Ye Xiaohan accompanied her six siblings to see Gu Bei off before returning together.
After a while, it was time for Ye Xiaohan's usual check-in on Bai Rong'er. As always, she went in.
When Bai Rong'er saw Ye Xiaohan enter, her expression remained relatively calm. To help her gradually expand her acceptance of the outside world, Ye Xiaohan had recently started leaving the door open during her visits, allowing Liu Yang and Liu Qi to wait outside.
Liu Qi leaned against the door frame, grinning as he waved at Bai Rong'er.
Bai Rong'er's gaze flickered between Liu Yang and Liu Qi without showing any signs of panic; she merely appeared somewhat aloof. This air of indifference, combined with her ethereal beauty, did not come across as rude at all.
Instead, it evoked a genuine sense of unattainability, making one feel that she was a goddess beyond reach, untouchable.
When Liu Yang noticed Bai Rong'er looking their way, he imitated Liu Qi and raised his hand to wave as well.
Bai Rong'er's attention was drawn to the waving arm; she glanced at it before shifting her gaze to Liu Yang.
Yang felt a sudden wave of nervousness as he was gazed at by her clear eyes.
However, it didn't take long for Bai Rong'er to withdraw her gaze, as if she hadn't noticed the two people at the door, lowering her head instead.
"The weather is really nice today, with plenty of sunshine. It's such a pity you didn't go out to enjoy it. But now you can see the stars filling the sky, which is beautiful too. Would you like to go out and take a look together?"
Ye Xiaohan continued to check things while trying to engage Bai Rong'er in conversation. At first, she mostly rejected him, but now she occasionally accepted and would join everyone for a bit.
Even though she merely sat quietly by while they chatted, it was enough to surprise them.
However, today seemed to be an off day for her. Perhaps because Gu Bei had been there, the presence of a strange adult male in the house made Bai Rong'er somewhat wary. She did not respond to Ye Xiaohan but instead shifted her gaze away.
This was Bai Rong'er's habit; when she was unwilling to speak, she would express her refusal by not responding.
It was a common occurrence, and Ye Xiaohan didn’t take it to heart. He knew he had to be patient; results wouldn’t come quickly.
Confirming that Bai Rong'er was stable today, Ye Xiaohan exchanged a few more words with her before gathering his things and heading out.
Yang closed the door behind him and saw that Bai Rong'er remained in the same position, sitting dazedly at the table without moving.
How pitiful.
"Sister-in-law, hasn’t White Maiden improved quite a bit recently? Is she still unable to recover?" Yang asked. "She doesn’t need to return to how she used to be right away; even just being able to interact with people normally would be good."
Bai Rong'er always maintained a distant attitude. Even though she no longer rejected everyone as vehemently as before due to their efforts, she still hadn’t completely relaxed.
Ye Xiaohan was the closest person to Bai Rong'er and had a more detailed understanding of her situation as a doctor.
"Having made it this far is already quite a good progress," Ye Xiaohan recalled Bai Rong'er's cool demeanor and said. "I think her reluctance to interact with outsiders may not just be due to her illness; it might also be part of her character."
When faced with significant misfortune and setbacks, people often undergo drastic changes in personality. However, no matter how much one’s character changes, they do not completely become another person; traces of their original personality will still reveal themselves inadvertently.
"You see, logically speaking, we saved her and helped her when she was in trouble. If it were someone else, they would definitely be grateful."
If it were Bai Rong'er, she would indeed show some gratitude, but more than that, there would be an unmistakable sense of wariness.
Li Yang defended Bai Rong'er, saying, "The White Maiden is still sick. Once she gets better, she definitely won't act like this. She used to scream when she saw me, but now she's not afraid of me anymore."
"Your expectations are really low," Ye Xiaohan remarked. "As long as she doesn't scream at you, you're satisfied."
Li Yang nodded. "The White Maiden is so pitiful. I just hope she can recover soon."
"Oh, really?" Ye Xiaohan teased, deliberately elongating her tone. "Have you forgotten? She's just staying with us temporarily. If she regains her memory and remembers how to contact her family, she'll want to go home."
Li Yang paused for a moment; he hadn't considered that. Or perhaps he had thought about it but had overlooked it. Since Bai Rong'er was rescued, she had been living with them and had perfectly integrated into their daily life.
At that moment, Ye Xiaohan's reminder made Li Yang realize that Bai Rong'er was merely a guest and did not belong to this home. Once she recovered, there would be no reason for her to stay.
Moreover, her family and friends might also be hoping for her return.
Thinking of this made Li Yang feel a bit downcast, but he still firmly said, "It's most important that the White Maiden gets better. I truly hope she can soon be free from her current suffering."
As long as Bai Rong'er could be healthy and well, everything else didn't matter much.
Ye Xiaohan hadn't expected Li Yang to be like this; shouldn't a child be more clingy towards someone or something they were interested in?
