Ye Xiaohan smiled and dodged to the side, patting the long neck of the horse.
"Stop messing around!"
However, no matter how she coaxed, the horse refused to budge.
Ye Xiaohan found it strange; she had bought this horse shortly after moving into the house because it was inconvenient to go out without transportation.
She had chosen this particular batch of horses because they were exceptionally intelligent. Although their abilities weren't top-notch, Ye Xiaohan didn't need to travel vast distances—just enough for her daily needs.
Why was it being so stubborn today? Ye Xiaohan jumped down from the carriage, preparing to check if something was wrong, perhaps a stone lodged in its hoof or something similar.
As she walked around to the other side of the horse, a gust of wind swept through the mountains, bringing with it a distinct smell of blood.
It was strong and fresh, the scent of blood that hadn't yet coagulated!
Ye Xiaohan felt a jolt of surprise; such a strong smell of blood could only come from a large animal suffering severe injuries. Could there be wild boars injured nearby? Surely it couldn't be a bear!
She quietly circled back and called for Bai Rong'er. With Bai Rong'er around, even if wild boars and bears came at them together, they would be fine.
If they managed to catch one, it would save a significant amount on ingredients for the restaurant! Ye Xiaohan searched around; opportunities like these didn’t come by every day.
"This way!"
The heavy scent of blood intensified ahead, and Ye Xiaohan even spotted droplets of blood on the grass below. No, it wasn't just droplets; it was a trail. A series of fine blood droplets formed a line, pointing her in the right direction.
Ye Xiaohan relaxed slightly. With such a significant loss of blood, it seemed that whether it was a wild boar or a bear, it wouldn't last much longer and wouldn't pose a strong threat.
She was so focused on collecting free materials that she didn't notice Bai Rong'er’s body starting to tremble slightly.
Suddenly, Bai Rong'er dashed away from Ye Xiaohan, leaving only a blur in her wake.
"Hey? What happened? Don't run away, I can't keep up!"
Ye Xiaohan called out, her feet already moving on their own to follow. Fortunately, Bai Rong'er stopped not far ahead, allowing Ye Xiaohan to catch up.
From a distance, Ye Xiaohan saw Bai Rong'er crouching down, holding something in the grass.
Surprised by the scene, Ye Xiaohan noted that Bai Rong'er extremely disliked physical contact with other beings or objects and always tried to avoid it.
Now, seeing Bai Rong'er actively touching something made Ye Xiaohan's curiosity peak.
However, when she finally reached Bai Rong'er, her curiosity was nearly extinguished as her heart almost skipped a beat.
The clump of grass was soaked in blood; it wasn't the beast Ye Xiaohan had imagined but a person.
A person who was clearly injured all over, barely breathing.
Bai Rong'er held the body that was almost lifeless, with just a breath left, trembling all over. Blood stained her clothes, sticking together in a mess, but she paid no attention to it.
The expression on her face was a mix of shock and sorrow, so complex that it couldn't be fully discerned at once. The only thing certain was that if this injured person stopped breathing, Bai Rong'er would likely collapse again from the shock.
To prevent such a tragedy from occurring, Ye Xiaohan hurried forward to offer assistance.
“Calm down, White Maiden, he’s still alive!” Ye Xiaohan shouted loudly into Bai Rong'er’s ear as she wrapped her arms around her. “He’s alive, and I can save him!”
Perhaps it was the words “I can save him” that reached Bai Rong'er. Her eyes cleared slightly from their frenzy and confusion as she stiffly turned to look at Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan nodded vigorously. “I’m a doctor. I was able to save you before, and I can save him now. Just calm down and let him go.”
Bai Rong'er held on tightly, as if afraid that the man would disappear. Ye Xiaohan worried that the man might not have died earlier but rather had been suffocated by Bai Rong'er.
Under Ye Xiaohan's patient reassurance, Bai Rong'er chose to trust her. The injured person was laid on the grass, and Ye Xiaohan quickly opened his clothing to reveal injuries that were nothing short of shocking.
A deep, long gash had sliced open his abdomen, exposing his insides. Ye Xiaohan had no doubt that if he hadn’t been pressing his hand against the wound, his intestines would have spilled out onto the ground.
However, for Ye Xiaohan, this was merely a straightforward surgical procedure. As a medical prodigy, even without modern instruments, she could manage the suturing required for such surgery.
The real danger lay in the risk of infection during the operation and subsequent complications.
As she contemplated this, Ye Xiaohan worked swiftly with her hands. There was no use in worrying about these things now; she would do what she could and then see how strong the man's will to survive was.
After performing basic bleeding control and bandaging, Ye Xiaohan took a blanket from the carriage and cut two branches to create a makeshift stretcher.
During her examination, she discovered that one of his ribs was also broken. To avoid causing further injury, they couldn’t move him carelessly.
Once they lifted him into the carriage, Bai Rong'er watched closely, occasionally reaching out to check his breathing.
Ye Xiaohan wiped her hands clean and changed into spare clothes kept in the carriage. The bloodstains would easily attract attention, and right now they desperately wanted to be invisible; the last thing they needed was to draw attention to themselves.
Fortunately, everything went smoothly along the way. Ye Xiaohan had entered and exited the city so many times that even the guards at the gate recognized her and let her pass with a casual glance.
Once she was far from the city, Ye Xiaohan finally felt a sense of relief.
“Xiao Han, you’re back!”
“Sister-in-law, you’re back!”
The voices came simultaneously, and it turned out to be Gu Bei carrying Liu Qi, who was holding a wooden carved rabbit and proudly presenting it to her.
“Sister-in-law, look! This is the rabbit that Big Brother made for Qi! You can borrow it to play!”
Liu Qi generously offered her beloved toy to Ye Xiaohan, believing that good things should be shared with those you love.
Ye Xiaohan patted Liu Qi’s head. “Thank you! How about you wait with Qi for a bit? I have something to take care of first.”
“Okay!” Liu Qi signaled Gu Bei to put her down and obediently stood aside.
Ye Xiaohan jumped onto the carriage, lifted the curtain, and turned to Gu Bei. “Come help me; someone is injured.”
“Who?” Gu Bei asked nervously as he looked at Ye Xiaohan, relieved to see she bore no signs of injury. He then jumped onto the carriage.
As soon as he entered, Gu Bei was stunned by the scene before him.
Bai Rong'er sat rigidly like a stone statue beside the injured person, blood staining the area around them. The entire carriage resembled a blood-soaked hell. If it had been anyone else in his place, they would likely have screamed in shock.
"What is this?" Gu Bei asked Ye Xiaohan, confusion evident in his voice. He could sense that the person was on the brink of death, and they were a stranger.
Ye Xiaohan briefly answered his question, "I found them on the road. No time for talk; we need to get them down. I can't do it alone. White Maiden is petrified and can't help at all. I think soon we'll need to move her too."
Gu Bei frowned. Picking up stray animals was one thing, but now they were picking up people?
Though he felt some complaints bubbling up inside him, he quickly moved to carry the person down at Ye Xiaohan's urging.
Ye Xiaohan temporarily placed the injured person in the room next to Bai Rong'er. She noticed that Bai Rong'er was closely following her, and she thought that this room would likely become Bai Rong'er's main activity space in the future.
"Gu Bei and Liu Yang, go boil some hot water. His wounds need further treatment. I'll get new bandages and medicine, and Qi can stay here with White Maiden."
After assigning tasks, everyone hurried off to fulfill their roles.
Liu Yang quickly got a fire going to boil water while glancing at Gu Bei's somewhat displeased expression. He understood that his older brother was not entirely on board with Sister-in-law's impulsive act of saving someone and bringing them home.
"Big Brother, don't be angry. Sister-in-law has a kind heart; that's why she went to save someone. Isn't that a good thing?"
Liu Yang tried to explain to Gu Bei, hoping this wouldn't affect their relationship.
"I understand," Gu Bei replied gruffly, sounding anything but convinced.
It wasn't that he didn't want Ye Xiaohan to save people; he was just worried that her kindness might lead her into trouble.
