Princess Shangyang looked at Ye Xiaohan without saying a word, secretly pleased with herself, thinking she had successfully subdued her.
"After all, you are just a mere courtesan. How could you possibly compete with me?" She felt destined to be with General Gu. Long ago, when General Gu saved her, their fates had been intertwined.
"Now you understand, right?" Princess Shangyang said proudly. "With your background, it is impossible for you to marry into the Gu Family. You might as well give up on that dream and find another man to settle down with."
She added, "If your family is very poor, I can give you some silver to ensure you have a grand wedding. You won't have to struggle selling smiles and drinks on the streets anymore; you could live comfortably for the rest of your life."
Ye Xiaohan looked at Princess Shangyang's expression that seemed to say, 'Aren't I especially kind? Hurry up and thank me,' feeling somewhat speechless.
This princess was young and had grown up pampered, her emotional maturity lagging behind her actual age. Facing her felt like being bullied by a schoolyard bully.
"Your Highness," Ye Xiaohan replied, "I don't know what misunderstanding you have, but if I were to be with a man, it would be because we love each other, not because I want something from him."
Although she was still hesitant to admit her relationship with Gu Bei and was unsure about settling down in this world, deep down she still harbored a desire to return to the modern world.
However, even if she didn't acknowledge it, she couldn't deny that she had indeed developed feelings for Gu Bei. Perhaps it was the mutual support they had shared in their impoverished village or perhaps it was Gu Bei's gentle treatment afterward.
Since Gu Bei confessed his feelings for her, she had not given him a clear response; subconsciously, she was avoiding the issue.
Yet just moments ago, hearing Princess Shangyang suggest giving up on Gu Bei and marrying someone else made her heart feel suddenly heavy. She couldn't imagine how it would feel if her future husband were anyone other than Gu Bei.
Unbeknownst to her, Gu Bei had already stormed into her heart and taken residence there.
Strangely enough, after realizing her feelings, she did not feel an overwhelming sense of discomfort. Even if she decided to be with Gu Bei and later had the chance to return to the modern world, she wouldn't go back.
Instead, she truly wanted to become a part of this world.
In a very short time, Ye Xiaohan had clarified the crux of the matter. Yet, she felt a subtle sense of relaxation; compared to the constant tug-of-war between Gu Bei and her desire to return, it was as if a weight had finally been lifted.
Amidst the treacherous palace, facing opponents who threatened and tempted her, Ye Xiaohan experienced a sense of stability that she hadn't felt since arriving in this world.
The Shangyang Princess did not expect Ye Xiaohan to counter her, and her displeasure was evident. "How can you go back on your word? You clearly agreed just now!"
Wasn't it you who had been talking to yourself all along?
Ye Xiaohan replied helplessly, "Your Highness, love requires mutual affection. If Gu Bei has feelings for someone else, marrying you won't make him happy either."
"You’re talking nonsense! General Gu and I are in love; he even saved me!" The Shangyang Princess hurriedly retorted. "Don't think you can sow discord. If it weren't for you always clinging to him, how could he possibly be so infatuated?"
It seemed that reasoning with the princess was futile; she was unwilling to accept reality.
To Ye Xiaohan's surprise, after initially showing displeasure towards her, the Queen had become less aggressive. Instead of intervening in the argument between Ye Xiaohan and the Shangyang Princess, she allowed them to clash without interference.
Seeing that Ye Xiaohan continued to defy her and refused to relent, the Shangyang Princess grew anxious. "What do you want? Is it not enough what I offer? Fine, tell me what you want! As long as you give General Gu to me, I can meet your demands! Will that work?"
In her mind, General Gu was the most important thing; as for a little wealth, even if it were more than a bit, she would gladly give it to this greedy woman!
Ye Xiaohan felt that she and the Shangyang Princess were on completely different wavelengths; communication between them was nearly impossible.
"Your Highness, Gu Bei is not an object, and love is not a transaction," Ye Xiaohan stated seriously. "Gu Bei and I are in love; that's why we decided to be together. It has nothing to do with his status or wealth. I will not give him up for money."
When Ye Xiaohan first met Gu Bei, he was so poor that he could barely support himself and his younger siblings; their family relied on Ye Xiaohan for support.
It is truly a joke that Ye Xiaohan is approaching Gu Bei for wealth.
Even now that Gu Bei has regained his identity and transformed into a general above thousands, Ye Xiaohan has not taken much from him.
As a woman who still embodies modern values at her core, Ye Xiaohan prefers self-reliance over depending on a man.
Making money is a skill; it not only enhances the quality of life but also serves as a testament to one's capabilities. Some people are not driven by the thrill of spending money but are instead passionate about earning it.
Clearly, these experiences are beyond the comprehension of women living in the constraints of ancient virtues.
They have never even had work experience. Whether it is the spoiled princess or the noble empress, they will likely never step out of the resplendent palace in their entire lives.
"Your Highness, I mean no disrespect; I just believe that your approach does not solve the problem."
Ye Xiaohan looked directly at the Shangyang Princess and said, "Gu Bei has the right to choose his partner. He will not change because of some external material factors. What I like is his unwavering determination. Similarly, I will not give up due to outside interference; what Gu Bei likes is me as I am."
However, such honesty was clearly not what the Shangyang Princess wanted to hear.
"You’re lying! You’re lying!" The Shangyang Princess grabbed a plate filled with delicacies from the imperial kitchen and threw it at Ye Xiaohan. "General Gu likes me! You’ve bewitched him so he can’t see your true self!"
Ye Xiaohan dodged the plate, avoiding the pastries that scattered in mid-air. "Whether I am genuine or not, Your Highness can think for yourself. All I can say is that a forced fruit is never sweet."
"You’re just lying!" The Shangyang Princess placed one hand on her hip and pointed at Ye Xiaohan with the other. "Do you think I don’t know? I’ve heard that you opened a restaurant as a front to lure wealthy men! A woman like you doesn’t deserve General Gu!"
How could someone as pure as General Gu be tainted by such a woman? Her existence was like a dark cloud obscuring the moon!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. The Shangyang Princess grabbed anything within reach and hurled it at Ye Xiaohan. The Queen's expression darkened as she raised her voice and scolded, "Shangyang! How can you behave so recklessly? Don't you care about your own status at all?"
The Shangyang Princess showed no fear. Perhaps it was due to being spoiled or used to being reprimanded; her actions did not falter. "Once I deal with this woman, I will listen to Mother Empress's teachings!"
However, Ye Xiaohan was not foolish enough to stand still and take the hits. Before the Shangyang Princess could strike, she quickly got to her feet and dodged a barrage of attacks.
Seeing this, the Shangyang Princess grew even angrier. This woman dared to provoke her and even had the audacity to hide!
"Grandma Hua, catch her for me!" The Shangyang Princess commanded. Immediately, Grandma Hua, who had been standing by to serve, responded and moved forward to seize Ye Xiaohan.
Caught off guard, Ye Xiaohan found herself firmly grasped. As she attempted to struggle, she realized that Grandma Hua possessed an incredible strength that seemed far beyond that of an ordinary middle-aged woman.
My goodness, is she a warrior from a fighting tribe?
Ye Xiaohan felt as if her arm might be broken. The tassels on her hairpin swayed incessantly at the corners of her eyes, causing her to hesitate.
Although the situation was chaotic, it seemed different from what she had imagined. If she resorted to using a sedative now, it could very well escalate things into a worse predicament.
Defying a princess and plotting against royalty were not the same offenses.
Just as Ye Xiaohan was in doubt, a familiar voice rang out from outside, commanding, "Stop!"
