“Boss, look at her, she’s pitiful. Just give her a bowl,” said a person nearby who couldn’t bear to watch any longer.
“Yeah, she’s starving and still taking care of her sister. That’s commendable!” A middle-aged man at the third table chimed in after understanding the situation.
Qing Luan observed quietly. Noticing that he was well-dressed and spoke eloquently, she offered him a slight smile in gratitude.
Hu Lingyun had only mentioned it casually, but when he saw the girl smile at him, he found it rather interesting. He turned to Boss and said, “If you can’t afford it, I’ll cover it. Give the girl three bowls of soup. Miss, let your sister sit over here; it’s windy standing there and the sun is too strong!”
“Thank you!” After expressing her gratitude, Qing Luan hurried over. She whispered something to Qin'er, who initially shook her head but reluctantly nodded when she saw Qing Luan's urgency. She took Tide's hand and walked over.
Boss hesitated at first, but seeing someone step in to help and offer to treat them, he didn’t want to seem stingy. While ladling out the soup, he said, “The girl asked me for it; how could I ask the guests for money?” He quickly filled the bowls and brought them to Hu Lingyun’s table. “Ladies, enjoy! This one’s on me!”
“Haha…” Seeing Boss so eager to treat them as if afraid someone would take his generosity away, everyone shared a light-hearted laugh.
Next to the shop was a basin of clean water, presumably for passersby to wash their hands. So Qing Luan led Tide and Qin'er over to wash up before returning to their seats after thanking Boss again.
“Little Tide, eat up,” Qing Luan handed her a steamed bun and gave her the bowl of meat soup that Boss had specially prepared. “Be careful; it’s hot!”
“Little… sister, you should eat too. After we finish, we need to find a place to stay in town,” Qin'er said awkwardly but managed to get through it.
“Okay!” Qing Luan replied with a sweet smile as she lowered her head to sip the warm soup. “Huh? Is this lamb soup?” The faint smell of mutton made her squint in surprise.
“Haha, looks like this girl knows her food!” Hu Lingyun chuckled as he noticed her reaction, his cleverness hidden behind his eyes as he joked with a smile.
"Boss," Qing Luan called out as a thought crossed her mind. When Boss approached, she continued, "Your generous gift of soup today has left me feeling uneasy. I know you run a small business and don't make much profit, so to show my gratitude, please accept this small token of my appreciation." With that, she pulled out some fennel and star anise powder that Liu Grandma had prepared before they set off for the mountains.
"What is this?" Boss asked, puzzled, and the others looked on with curiosity.
"This is a spice. Tomorrow, when you cook the lamb, add a bit of this, and it will enhance the flavor," Qing Luan explained with a smile.
"Really?" Boss asked, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
"Yes!" This was her way of repaying the kindness.
"My sister makes the best food," Tide chimed in, his face glistening with satisfaction after a hearty meal.
"Tide!" Qin'er shot him a warning glare, her brows furrowed. They were currently fleeing for their lives; if they drew too much attention and were discovered, it would spell disaster for them. Hence, her fierce look served as a warning.
