After staying at the Lin Residence for about ten days, it had been quite peaceful. Tide and Qin'er were living comfortably, almost treating the Lin Residence as their own home. However, Qing Luan felt differently; deep restlessness and unease stirred within her.
She had thought carefully about it. Those black-clad individuals who were mistaken for pirates were sent by Aunt Huang, which meant something must have happened at Chen Residence. Otherwise, she wouldn’t need to concern herself with someone like her, who was believed to be dead by outsiders. But why would they go to such lengths, risking the lives of a hundred just to ensure she was not spared?
She was no longer a member of the Chen Family; why couldn’t they let her go?
This question lingered in her mind, making it difficult for her to eat or sleep. She worried about the Zhu Clan and her two sisters. Although they hadn’t spent much time together, they genuinely cared for her. How could she let that go?
“Miss, Miss,” Qin'er burst into the room with a loud bang, panting as she exclaimed, “Something has happened!”
“What happened?” Qing Luan was startled and stood up abruptly, all her thoughts scattering.
“It’s… it’s… Uncle Lin said he needs your help,” Qin'er gasped, struggling to finish her sentence.
“He needs me?” Qing Luan asked in confusion but didn’t dwell on it. She softly inquired, “Where is he?”
“In the hall.”
Qing Luan lifted her skirt and hurried towards the hall. She didn’t know what Uncle Lin needed from her, but if it involved needing help, it surely wasn’t trivial. Regardless of whether she could assist or not, she wanted to know what was happening as soon as possible.
As soon as she entered the hall, she felt a bit confused—there were three people sitting in the living room. Uncle Lin and Aunt Lin were familiar faces, but the other person was someone she recognized but didn't know well; he was the middle-aged man who had tried to invite her for lamb soup outside the city.
But what did this have to do with her?
“Qingluan,” Hu Lingyun immediately stood up excitedly when he saw her enter.
“Uh…” Qing Luan was startled and instinctively took a step back, asking, “Do you… know me?”
“Brother Hu, don’t scare her. Sit down, sit down. Let’s take our time and talk…” Uncle Lin hurriedly stopped Hu Lingyun, urging him to calm down and let him explain: “Qing Luan, come in.”
Qing Luan hesitated for a moment but decided that Uncle Lin and Aunt Lin probably wouldn’t harm her, so she stepped inside and quietly asked, “I’m not sure why you’re looking for me. What’s going on?”
“Qing Luan, let me introduce you,” Uncle Lin gestured for her to sit down before continuing, “This is Hu Lingyun, a friend of mine. He said he has met you once before and is here to ask for your help in saving his sister!”
“Saving his sister?” Qing Luan was puzzled and asked, “Why do you want me to save his sister? I’m not a doctor.” Why did these strange situations always seem to find her?
From Uncle Lin, she learned that Hu Lingyun's sister was named Hu Linglong. She was a twenty-year-old woman who had been married for two years and had just given birth to a son who was not yet a month old. The story began with the Hu family—Hu Lingyun's parents had both passed away, leaving him and his sister behind, while he remained unmarried. His sister Hu Linglong had married a scholar who had worked hard but came from a poor background. After passing the scholar exams, due to financial difficulties in his family, he moved into the Hu family.
Initially, the scholar treated Hu Linglong well; he was gentle and caring. However, after she became pregnant, influenced by some dubious friends who suggested that since Hu Lingyun was unmarried, the family’s assets would not belong to his son, he began to neglect her. He spent time at brothels under the pretense of preparing for future exams but was actually indulging in debauchery. After Hu Linglong gave birth, just days later, he took her maid—a maid known for her beauty—into his service. This maid became arrogant and domineering, making Hu Linglong’s life miserable; she cried all day long and couldn’t even eat properly as her health deteriorated.
