She was only ten years old, lacking strength and stature, standing on the bed and shouting angrily. If anyone had seen her, they would have found it amusing, but at that moment, no one was watching. Only her twisted expression of fury was visible.
"Is the sky falling just because there's no man? If you don't want to live, why bring a child into this world? You gave birth to him but don't care for him; he's going to starve to death! Do you know that? Do you even realize?" Her small hands gripped the frail shoulders tightly, shaking them fiercely as she questioned in anger.
At first unresponsive, Hu Linglong gradually began to regain her senses. Though her eyes were still dazed, at least they had some focus.
For Qing Luan, this was a good start. She continued to scold, "If you die, others will succeed in their schemes. Look at you; you're still alive, yet other women are stealing your man, sleeping in your bed, spending your money. Once you're gone, they'll even target your son... Is this what you want? To push yourself to death for their benefit?"
Her hands slowly began to change; the lifeless fingers that had been sprawled out started to clench into fists. There was a hint of anger flickering in her once dull black eyes.
"Wanting to die isn't that easy. Just take a rope and hang yourself; the sooner you die, the sooner you'll be reborn. But don't drag your brother down with you! He treats you so well, and your repayment is bringing trouble to the Hu Family and putting everything about your brother at risk. How can you bear that? How can you be so cruel?" Having some reaction was good; the worst thing was despair leading to a heart that had truly given up—then there would be no saving her.
"Fine, if you want to die, I'll help you. But before you go, take your troubles with you. You gave birth to a child but won't care for him; what's the point of him living? Anyway, if you're dead, he won't last long either. It's better for him to die early," Qing Luan said as she released Hu Linglong and walked over to the small bed where the hungry child had fallen asleep crying. With determination, she shouted, "Jin'er, come in!"
"Miss," Jin'er rushed in after opening the door. "What do you need?"
"Take him downstairs and throw him into the pond in the backyard," Qing Luan instructed coldly as she handed the child over to Jin'er. "It's better for him to die and go with his young mistress than suffer through hardships. Let him be reborn into a good family in his next life."
"Miss...," Jin'er's hands trembled as she spoke hesitantly. "This is absolutely not acceptable! The child is still so small..."
"It's precisely because he's small that he won't feel pain when he dies. Otherwise, once he loses his mother and is left with that heartless father and stepmother, who knows how much he will suffer? It's better for him to die early and have a chance at a better rebirth," Qing Luan said loudly while pinching the sleeping child lightly. Instantly, the room filled with the sound of the child's cries.
"Miss...," Jin'er still hesitated.
"Your grandfather has ordered you to listen to me. Are you trying to oppose that?" Qing Luan questioned angrily. "If you don't go do it, I'll have Hu Ye sell you."
"Woo... I’ll go, I’ll go," Jin'er finally relented, crying as she turned while holding the child. "Young Master, it's not that I am heartless; it's just that the young lady is too ruthless. She would rather die with you than let you be with your ungrateful, heartless father!"
It seemed that to match Jin'er's words, the child cried in a surprisingly rhythmic manner, making it both amusing and exasperating.
The child was taken away, and Qing Luan turned to look at Hu Linglong. Seeing her merely turning her head to stare back, Qing Luan took out a flask of wine she had prepared earlier and said, "If you want to die so badly, I’ll help you. This wine contains Cinnabar, ensuring you die thoroughly, so you can accompany your son..."
"Rui'er," Qing Luan continued to murmur when suddenly a piercing scream interrupted her words, startling her. Before she could regain her composure, the person who had been lying there half-dead suddenly sprang up as if injected with a stimulant, throwing off the covers and rushing out. Qing Luan was momentarily stunned before she hurried after her.
"Rui'er, my Rui'er," Hu Linglong staggered forward. Qing Luan followed closely behind but did not reach out to support her; she simply watched as Hu Linglong stumbled toward the pond in the backyard...
