Jin'er tidied up a bit before turning to leave, closing the door behind her.
Wei Scholar and Xiu'er, feeling aggrieved, ran to Hu Linglong to vent their frustrations. Jin'er happened to miss them, leaving only Hu Linglong in the room. Wei Scholar and the others had been away for many days and were completely unaware of what had happened to the Hu Family. They hadn't even gone to find Xiu'er's mother; otherwise, they would have known that the Hu Family had already changed, and that the imposing Mama Bai had long been locked away, waiting for Wei Scholar and the others to return.
"Oh, sister, why do you look so haggard?" Xiu'er exclaimed upon seeing the weary woman staring wide-eyed at her. Seductively touching her own delicate face, she mocked, "Sister is a Young Lady; why don't you take better care of yourself? Look at you—after having a child, you've become so unpresentable. No wonder he finds you lacking."
Hu Linglong clenched her hands tightly but did not respond, merely casting a faint glance at her without answering.
"Oh dear..." At that moment, Nursemaid returned with the well-fed Rui'er in her arms. The little one was cooing happily, bringing a sense of joy just by listening.
"Nursemaid," Xiu'er snapped as soon as she saw Nursemaid's serious expression. "What are you doing? Why didn't you follow my instructions?"
Nursemaid stood there in shock for a moment before saying, "I was taking care of the young master." Realizing what had happened, she knew she couldn't afford to dig her own grave.
"Who told you to take care of him?" Xiu'er was on the verge of losing it. She noticed that everything had changed while she was out; it was no longer under her control. "Didn't I say once a day is enough? Don't think just because my mother brought you in that I won't kick you out..."
"Wah wah..." The previously happy Rui'er was startled by the argument and let out a primal cry for help.
Clapping her hands from behind them, Qing Luan, who had been watching coldly, laughed when she heard Rui'er crying. "How impressive! Who would have thought that the one in charge of the Hu Family is just a Maid? And she can't even keep the young master fed—what a strange tale!"
"You again?" Wei Scholar felt inexplicably nervous upon seeing her.
"Take him away," Qing Luan instructed Nursemaid to carry the child away so they could settle accounts properly without harming him.
"Stop," Xiu'er blocked the Nursemaid who was about to turn away, reaching out to snatch the child from her arms, but was stopped by Qing Luan. "What are you doing?" Xiu'er couldn't help but shout angrily as she saw her ruining her plans.
"If anything happens to Rui'er, you..." She pointed a small finger at Wei Scholar, pursing her lips into a sweet smile, and with a cute wink, she finished her sentence. "It will end very badly, very badly...!"
"You... don't scare me, I don't believe you," Xiu'er stammered defiantly.
Qing Luan blinked and signaled the Nursemaid to leave, then turned to face her, mocking, "I've seen foolishness before, but never as foolish as yours—Hu Linglong is dead, her son is gone, so what does he count as in the Hu Family? He isn't Hu Lingyun's son and has no right to anything from the Hu Family, understand? Idiot!"
"Shut up!" Wei Scholar scolded the still unwilling Xiu'er, narrowing his eyes adorned with peach blossoms as he stared at the girl who was being difficult and provoking them. He furrowed his brow, pondering what had happened in these past few days that made him feel such an ominous sense.
"You should have shut up long ago!" Qing Luan mocked again before turning to walk into the house. "Linglong Sister, are you feeling any better?"
