From hope to despair, it was a transformation from heaven to hell. She suppressed the weight in her heart and her urge to scream, and once again asked softly, "Tell me, how did you end up here? How did you escape that fate?"
"Miss," Qin'er interrupted before Erwa could speak, "Erwa is very hungry. Let's get him something to eat first and change his clothes, shall we?"
Upon hearing this, Qing Luan immediately felt guilty and quickly took his hand, saying, "It's all my fault. Come on, Erwa, let's go eat. After we finish, you can tell me everything." Now that she had a bit of silver on hand, they could afford something nice and warm. She couldn't bring him back to the Hu Family; she needed to make other arrangements.
"Beasts! Things worse than dogs!" A curse escaped Qing Luan's lips through gritted teeth. Her gaze was so fierce that if looks could kill, those she cursed would have died thousands of times over.
"Grandma..." Tide bit his lip as he called out, tears filling his small face.
"Miss, we must take revenge for them," Qin'er said, clenching her fists, her eyes filled with hatred.
How could they remain calm? How could they not hate? From Erwa's words, they learned that those people not only killed the villagers but also violated the young girls and brides. That was something no one could tolerate. Erwa had witnessed those people assaulting his sister and killing her; the hatred in his heart was beyond words.
It turned out that on that day, when Erwa saw Qing Luan hadn’t taken him up the mountain, he felt a bit angry and returned home alone. On the way, he encountered his mother and sister and complained about his dissatisfaction. His mother tried to comfort him, but he was still unwilling and jumped into the small river, refusing to go back no matter how they coaxed him.
Children raised by the sea were all good swimmers since they had been in the water since they were young. So Aunt Zhang didn’t force him but led her eldest daughter toward where Qing Luan lived. However, before they could reach their destination, they encountered those men in black. They didn’t even have time to scream before Aunt Zhang fell dead under a sword, while Erwa's sister was dragged into the bushes... Hearing the commotion, Erwa wanted to call out but saw his sister being violated and killed right before his eyes. In her final moments of struggle against death and humiliation, she signaled for him not to come out. The overwhelming shock left Erwa stunned; he bit down hard on his lip and slowly sank into the water, hiding his cries and tears beneath its surface.
He didn’t know how long he hid in the grass by the riverbank—long enough that he could no longer hear any sounds. Day turned into night and then back into day before he weakly crawled out. He made his way to where his sister and mother lay dead without shedding a single tear. He placed their bodies side by side and covered them with whatever he could find. Finally, he turned back for one last look at the village that had been burned beyond recognition before leaving without looking back.
"Revenge must be taken, but we are too small to do anything," at that moment, Qing Luan realized just how selfish and disgusting she had been. She kept saying she wanted revenge while living a comfortable life in the Hu Family while Erwa endured so much suffering. He had been pampered by Aunt Zhang; he was a treasure at home who had suffered greatly with only revenge on his mind. But what about her? Perhaps she only thought about it in her heart without any intention of taking real action.
"What should we do then?" When Erwa saw them again, there was light on his face—a glimmer of hope for revenge. "Are we just going to let it go?" The scene of his sister and mother dying before him replayed in his mind every day; he was determined that no matter what happened, he would take revenge—he must avenge them.
