On the first night back at the Chen Residence, Qing Luan found herself isolated. Chen Xiaode and Huang were busy currying favor with the Young Marquis, and although Qing Luan was supposed to accompany them, Huang came up with a grand excuse, saying that since Qing Luan had just returned, she should take some time to adjust and stay in her room.
Qing Luan did not refuse; she merely looked at Gui Mama, her eyes filled with suppressed grievance. Her expression made it impossible for Gui Mama to hide her smirk. Casting a disdainful glance at the aggrieved Qing Luan, she thought to herself: Even if she is the Young Miss, the Legitimate Daughter, what does it matter? She still has to heed my words. Hmph, let’s see how this pampered young lady fares when I decide to make her unhappy.
No one paid Qing Luan any mind. Huang felt that simply allowing Qing Luan to return was already a generous act. She believed that now that Qing Luan was back, she would be under her control, so her attitude towards her was quite dismissive.
Days passed.
Qing Luan had been back at the Chen Residence for several days, staying quietly in the Autumn Swallow Courtyard without venturing out. This behavior pleased Huang greatly. However, while Huang was satisfied, someone else was not.
Chen Yan'er learned that the supposedly deceased Chen Qingluan had returned after five years and was living in her Autumn Swallow Courtyard while also getting close to the Young Marquis. Consumed by envy and resentment, she rushed back to the Chen Residence and stormed into the Autumn Swallow Courtyard.
“Chen Qingluan,” she exclaimed upon seeing the elegant figure in the courtyard. The charm in her brows had blossomed; she still possessed a flower-like delicacy that made her eyes redden with emotion. Why did she have to marry an old man and endure humiliation from the legitimate wife? Even her own mother refused to care for her anymore. She had lost everything—why was Chen Qingluan still alive?
If only she had returned sooner, it should have been her who married well.
Hearing the call, Qing Luan turned to look at the furious Chen Yan'er and smiled gently, asking softly, “Who are you?” Chen Yan'er found this amusing!
“You don’t recognize me?” Chen Yan'er asked incredulously, her anger flaring up upon hearing the question.
Shaking her head innocently, Qing Luan replied, “I’ve lost my memory and can’t remember who I am.” Surely this would make her happier!
Indeed, when Chen Yan'er realized that Chen Qingluan truly could not remember who she was, a meaningful smile crept onto her lips. She then walked over gracefully and said, “I’m your third sister; my name is Yan'er. You are my Fourth Sister.” How wonderful it was that she had amnesia; this version of Chen Qingluan could easily be manipulated.
“Third sister?” Qing Luan feigned confusion and asked, “Isn’t my sister named Azure Phoenix or Azure Duck? Why doesn’t your name have ‘Qing’ in it? I’m called Qing Luan!” This had always been a sore point for Chen Yan'er; those who were not Legitimate Daughters were not entitled to have ‘Qing’ in their names. She had quarreled with Huang over this matter before, but at that time Huang was merely Aunt Huang and had no authority.
As for Huang's family, Chen Yan'er realized it was too late to change her name.
"You...," Chen Yan'er was infuriated by her ambiguous words. Damn it, even with amnesia, she was still so difficult; she truly could not be underestimated. "Heh, Qing Luan, it's just a name. I really am your third sister. This Autumn Swallow Courtyard you live in was originally mine; it became vacant only after I got married."
She was also her father's daughter. Why did they get to enjoy all the benefits? This time, she would not let Chen Qingluan off the hook.
"Oh, is that so?" Nodding in realization, she then asked in confusion, "So when Third Sister returns, will this courtyard be given back to you?" She should have known that she had come back to investigate.
This Chen Yan'er had been tricked into marrying the old man of the Zhou family; she must be filled with resentment, no matter who was responsible for her plight. After all, she was standing in for Azure Phoenix, so she should have been dragged into it as well.
"No need for that. Fourth Sister has finally returned; how could I take back the courtyard when I should be cherishing her?" She pretended to be generous and graceful while gritting her teeth inside.
Qing Luan did not refuse either. Upon hearing her question, she practiced Tai Chi while saying she didn't know, which nearly drove Chen Yan'er to internal injury from anger. In frustration, she went to find her mother.
"Mother, why did you want her back?" As soon as Chen Yan'er saw Huang, she immediately complained with dissatisfaction.
"Yan'er," seeing her daughter filled Huang with joy, but facing those eyes full of hatred made her helplessly say, "Chen Qingluan still has value for us now; don't act against her, understand?" She knew her daughter's thoughts all too well, but now Chen Qingluan was no longer the same. She had worked hard to bring her back and absolutely could not let anything go awry this time.
"What value does she have?" Chen Yan'er said unhappily. "Are you trying to marry her off to the Young Marquis?"
"That's the Young Marquis's own intention," Huang quickly deflected. "Qing Luan came back because of him too, so don't speak carelessly and mess up my plans!"
Seeing that after her return, her mother showed no concern for how she had been living in the Zhou family but only thought about marrying Chen Qingluan off to the Young Marquis made Chen Yan'er seethe with resentment. However, she understood that her mother's intention was to use Chen Qingluan; but she didn't want that—if Chen Qingluan really married the Young Marquis, then she'd have to kneel before her whenever they met in the future.
She absolutely did not want such an outcome!
Thinking to herself, a person suddenly flashed through her mind. She smiled immediately and said to Huang obediently, "I understand now. I'll head back first. If there's anything, just send someone to tell me!" Although she was being suppressed by the matriarch in the Zhou family, her life wasn't too difficult; it was just that the old Lord Zhou made her feel quite displeased.
Seeing her daughter suddenly so sensible, Huang nodded, feeling that it was good for her to get married and that she had thought things through.
In truth, Huang never expected that her plans would be disrupted by Chen Yan'er. However, even without Chen Yan'er, Chen Qingluan would not marry Qiu Mingqi; but that was a matter for later.
Qing Luan had always lived in Autumn Swallow Courtyard, and Qiu Mingqi treated it like his own backyard, which made Qing Luan very dissatisfied. Therefore, she firmly stated, "Young Marquis, although I don't understand much, I do know that men and women should not be too close. If we continue like this, people will say we are engaging in private dealings. My reputation will be harmed, and that wouldn't be good for you either!"
Damn it! Huang may have tacitly agreed, but that didn't mean this young lady agreed as well. Your little tricks might fool an idiot, but you won't deceive me; you're still too inexperienced.
Qiu Mingqi didn't expect that when he came to see her, she not only didn't feel happy but also blamed him instead. He unhappily replied, "Your father has already betrothed you to me. So what if others say something? I don't care!"
