"Really?" Sister Yun looked at her with surprise.
"Let's go," Qin'er felt uncomfortable under her gaze, as if she were standing naked in front of her.
Li Yunluo stood not far away, squinting her eyes at their secretive behavior and quietly followed them.
"This mountainous area can grow crops just as well as the rice fields. As long as everyone clears the land and plants the crops, I believe life will improve for everyone soon," she had already tried this in the fishing village and was confident it would work.
"The logic is sound, but it will take months before the crops are ready. How will everyone survive in the meantime?" Old Man Lin felt embarrassed; a man who had lived most of his life was being outmatched by a fifteen-year-old girl. She spoke so convincingly.
"Crops..." Qing Luan was about to say something when she was interrupted by Qin'er's urgent voice.
"Miss... Miss," Qin'er called out as she rushed forward. Upon seeing them, she smiled brightly and approached Qing Luan to report, "Miss, everything has been brought."
"Where is it?" Qing Luan's eyes lit up with joy upon seeing Qin'er, and she smiled as she asked.
"It will be here shortly. I rode ahead on a fast horse," Qin'er replied.
"Old Man Lin, let's go," Qiner's arrival lifted Qing Luan's spirits from the gloom of the past few days. She excitedly said to Lin Prefect, "Wait a moment, I have a surprise for you!"
"A surprise?" Old Man Lin forced a smile, thinking to himself: even if the emperor were to arrive now, he would only feel astonished, not joyful.
The group hurried forward, attracting some attention from others. A few curious onlookers quickly followed them to see what was happening.
On the flat road, carts slowly appeared before everyone's eyes...
"Wow, someone has come to save us, someone has come to save us..." As soon as they saw the carriage approaching, smiles spread across their faces, and a glimmer of hope shone in their eyes.
"Someone is here, someone is here... Wuwu..." The women, who had lost all hope, couldn't help but burst into tears upon seeing a flicker of hope.
A crowd began to gather slowly as more people heard that help was on the way...
"Don't move," one of the officials said as he noticed the starving people slowly closing in, their eyes gleaming with a frightening green light. The Lin Prefect sent someone to intercept them, but those people paid no heed, their gaze fixed solely on the goods in the carriage.
"Bang!" A loud noise startled those who were about to fight for food. Everyone looked at each other, unsure whether to advance or retreat.
"What are you doing?" The individuals hoarding food jumped out first, shouting in dissatisfaction, "Why won't you give us food? That belongs to us!"
"Yeah, do you want to keep it all for yourselves?" someone taunted.
"Miss, let's just share the food with them; they look so pitiful," Li Yunluo pleaded sweetly from the side, looking forlorn. "There’s so much food; we can't possibly eat it all ourselves!"
On the surface, her words sounded kind, but they subtly suggested that they wanted to hoard the food for themselves, which only fueled the anger of the refugees.
"Miss Zhu, you saved us once, and we are grateful. But if you try to take our food now, don’t blame us for being rude!" Faced with a choice between life and death, he believed his stance was justified.
"Miss, you're a good person. Please give me some food!" an elderly man trembled as he begged tearfully. "My little grandson is about to die; I’m begging you..."
Qing Luan did not get angry at their misunderstanding; she merely cast a cold glance at Li Yunluo, a mysterious smile curling at her lips. Then she jumped onto the carriage and addressed the crowd: "The food will be distributed to you..."
"When will it be delivered?" someone complained.
"If you had hidden it, we wouldn't know!"
"Exactly, exactly,"
Various voices drowned out Qing Luan's explanation, and the scene erupted into chaos once again.
"Shut up!" Xuanyuan Rui shouted at the unreasonable refugees, feeling indignant for Qing Luan. Over the past few days, he had seen her share meals and living quarters with these refugees, trying to help them solve their problems. Yet, when faced with conflict, they completely forgot her kindness. It was infuriating!
Xuanyuan Rui's roar silenced everyone; they dared not speak further. He had been by Miss Zhu's side lately, and even a cold glance from him could make people tremble. Now that he was angry, no one dared to say anything else; they could only close their mouths in fear and stare at him.
"Young Master, these people are pitiful; please don’t make things difficult for them!" Li Yunluo spoke up at the right moment, though a glimmer of something unreadable flashed in her eyes.
Upon hearing her words, the refugees' eyes flickered with anger, but none dared to voice their thoughts.
Qing Luan did not confront Li Yunluo directly; at this moment, she couldn't even be bothered to look at her.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Qing Luan stood atop the carriage and addressed the crowd, "the supplies on the carriage... were delivered overnight by my people..."
As soon as she spoke, everyone's expressions changed, especially Li Yunluo's; her face turned a mix of pale and green, making for a particularly striking sight.
"What if the young lady truly wants to keep her food?" Sister Yun sneered coldly from beside Li Yunluo.
"Ha ha, Sister Yun, I don't know," her soft tone was full of coquetry, and her smiling eyes turned crescent-shaped, looking adorable yet actually quite annoying.
"If you don't know, then don't say too much. Be careful; trouble comes from your mouth..." came a faint warning, though her gaze drifted to the distance. "My young master's methods are not simple. Right now, he is being held back by the young lady, but when she gets tired of it, you'll know your fate!"
Li Yunluo's expression changed, and she fell silent, her gaze towards Xuanyuan Rui growing increasingly profound.
"There isn't much food, but it can last us a few days. If you want to eat here, you must do some work. I won't support useless people!" Qing Luan's words stirred ripples in everyone's hearts; they looked at each other in confusion, unsure of what she wanted them to do.
"Miss, may I ask what we need to do?"
"Clean up your home and repair the dam. Otherwise, when the next storm hits, none of us will survive!" This was what she had decided after thinking for several days.
After the dam was destroyed, the water slowly receded. They could enter now, but if they didn't deal with the dead bodies and dead pigs inside, this place would truly become a wasteland.
Upon hearing her words, everyone exchanged glances. After some hesitation, one person asked, "If we work, will the young lady provide us with food?" They were used to working to support their families; now that they were idling around all day, it felt uncomfortable. As long as there was food available, what did it matter if they had to do some work?
"Yes!" Qing Luan replied with a faint smile that brought a sense of reassurance. In a serious tone, she assured them, "I have reached an agreement with the Merchant Alliance. As long as everyone rebuilds their homes, the Merchant Alliance will send a batch of food every three days until the court sends someone here!"
