A-Song's attitude made Chen Xiaode furious, but he felt helpless. Understanding that the little brat was difficult to deal with, he sulked and sat to the side, thinking that when Qing Luan arrived, he would definitely teach this blind fool a lesson and make him understand what his status was.
A-Song commented, "Old Chen, you don't have any status now; you're just a fallen noble, acting like you're some emperor. You really can deceive yourself!"
A-Song couldn't be bothered to respond, busy with his own tasks, while Chen Xiaode found a chair and sat there like a lord, making it seem as if this place was his territory.
At this moment, to be honest, Qing Luan was really not around. She had anticipated that Chen Xiaode would seek her out after losing everything, so she had slipped away.
Inside the Princess Mansion.
"Sister Yun, Xuanyuan Rui has been at war for over half a year; why hasn't he won yet?" This guy had gone off without even sending a letter, and no one knew how things were going, which was quite worrying.
"No," Yun Yiqing said with a bitter smile. "I asked the emperor, and he said the Barbarians are using underhanded tactics. They aren't fighting head-on but are resorting to ambushes. So winning this war is quite challenging!"
"But we can't just drag this out like this!?" Qing Luan exclaimed upon hearing this. "They're fighting right at their doorstep; they have easy access to food and supplies. Meanwhile, we're transporting grain from the south to the north. How can the court sustain this in the long run?" This was not a good strategy; it might burden the country due to this war and lead to suffering among the people. If that happened, it would be a loss all around.
"Alas, the court can't bear it. Right now, Prime Minister Huang keeps saying Xuanyuan Rui isn't aggressive enough in battle and wants his grandson to take over. Bai Song has been opposing him all along, so things are at a standstill. If Xuanyuan Rui can't win soon, things will become unpredictable," Yun Yiqing expressed her concerns about the internal and external troubles facing the court. She didn't know why she felt that discussing it with her might bring about a breakthrough; she also thought it was quite ridiculous for a sixteen-year-old girl like her to know much about state affairs.
But then she remembered that at such a young age, she had managed to establish a Commercial Kingdom for herself. As the saying goes, business is like warfare; perhaps she really could find a solution.
"This old man is getting restless again!" Qing Luan hated Prime Minister Huang deeply but felt powerless. The events of years past were merely her suspicions without evidence; no one would believe her if she spoke up. They might even accuse her of defending the Zhu Clan out of personal interest. So now she could only endure and wait for Xuanyuan Rui's return.
"How can he remain calm?" Yun Yiqing looked at her incredulously and said, "You mentioned that Xuanyuan Hui's death wasn't simple, and even my cousin Azure Lotus Princess died under suspicious circumstances. How can he stay at ease? Right now, he's probably anxious about how to get rid of Xuanyuan Rui; that way he would have an opportunity to act!"
“How is his grandson?” She understood these matters well enough and wasn’t worried about Xuanyuan Rui because she had already sent someone to deliver a message and protect him. Besides, he was highly skilled and had a strong army at his command, so there was little to be concerned about. What worried her most was the emperor's attitude. If the emperor believed that Xuanyuan Rui could not win the battle, then replacing him with Prime Minister Huang's grandson would be detrimental.
If his grandson were a loyal patriot, things wouldn’t be too bad. But if he and Prime Minister Huang were cut from the same cloth, then it would be serious trouble, and the nation would truly be in peril. If Prime Minister Huang could betray the country for his own selfish interests, then his grandson would likely be the same kind of person, willing to hand over the entire nation to others.
“Well... I really can’t say,” Yun Yiqing shook her head, looking troubled. “I’ve been away for so many years, and Prime Minister Huang has protected his grandson very well, so not much is known by outsiders. We might as well wait and ask Nishang; she might know something…”
“What do I know!?” Yun Nishang had just walked in with Chen Qingyuan and happened to catch Yun Yiqing’s words.
“ Luan'er,” Chen Qingyuan smiled joyfully upon seeing her much older sister sitting there.
“Elder sister,” Qing Luan smiled back and then looked at Yun Nishang. “Do you know anything about Prime Minister Huang’s grandson?”
“You mean Huang Pinyan?” Yun Nishang responded to Qing Luan’s question. “That guy is quite mysterious; even someone like Huang Zheng can be so arrogant, yet he remains very low-key… I’ve only seen him twice, but I feel he’s not an ordinary person. His gaze is quite dark and unsettling!”
“I really guessed right,” Qing Luan frowned, looking helpless.
“What happened?” Chen Qingyuan was startled by their serious expressions and asked with concern. She had heard a bit about what was happening with the Chen Family, but that family felt too foreign to her, so she didn’t feel sad at all, as if it were someone else’s affair. Right now, the only person she cared about was this sister who had saved her time and again from peril.
“Prime Minister Huang wants Huang Pinyan to replace Xuanyuan Rui, but from what Nishang said, I think that Huang Pinyan isn’t a good person either. So both Qing Luan and I are worried that if this continues, the situation will become even more unfavorable,” Yun Yiqing explained without any displeasure at Chen Qingyuan’s inquiry.
“What should we do?” Azure Phoenix instinctively felt disgusted towards the Huang Family.
“I hope the emperor can take a firm stance; at least Xuanyuan Rui will never betray his grandfather. As for others, who knows?” Qing Luan pointed out helplessly. In truth, no matter what they did, it wouldn’t matter; the emperor was the one who made the final decision.
"As long as the food issue can be resolved, Prime Minister Huang won't have so much to say!" Yun Nishang heard some remarks and, feeling defeated, slumped into her chair, speaking despondently.
"Food?" Qing Luan murmured, lowering her head in thought.
"Qing Luan, do you have a way to solve this?" Yun Yiqing asked hopefully upon seeing her deep in contemplation. Her words caught the attention of the other two, and all three pairs of eyes were fixed on Qing Luan, eager for her to provide a surprise.
"..." Qing Luan was lost in her own thoughts and did not respond. Instead, she pondered: although she had food, transporting it to the north was labor-intensive and costly. If the north didn't lack food, all problems would be easily resolved. "Sister Yun, why is there such a severe food shortage in the north?"
Her business was thriving, but food was primarily concentrated in the south, where conditions were suitable for its growth. The northern operations were merely modeled after those in the south; although they weren't as large-scale, they had taken shape. She hadn't ventured to the north due to matters in the capital tying her down; otherwise, she would have explored that area herself. Now, however, she felt like a blind person, completely unaware of what was happening.
