"Zhao Yun's portrait?" Qing Luan was even more astonished. "How did you come across Zhao Yun's portrait?" The entire situation was beyond strange.
"It was sent by the Prime Minister's Residence, asking my brother to help find someone. I had just returned from the academy and happened to glance at it. I noticed that the person in the painting looked a lot like Zhao Yun, only much younger, not as steady and composed as he is now..." He recounted what had happened earlier, waiting for their response.
"A young Zhao Yun... Who would recognize Zhao Yun and Tide?" Qing Luan pondered, unable to understand how she had exposed Tide and the others. She had always protected them well and never imagined such a thing could happen. If she had known, it would have been better to keep them close so she could protect them properly.
"Miss, could it be someone from the fishing village?" A-Song asked after a moment of silence.
"No, it can't be," Qing Luan replied confidently. She had ensured that the people in the fishing village lived well; there was no way they would betray her. If something happened to her, the prosperity of the fishing village would also vanish. Those people were not fools, so she trusted them completely.
"Then who could it be?" A-Song countered. "Miss has been away from there for four years and has been in the capital for over a year now, with very little contact with Zhao Yun. The portrait is not of Zhao Yun as he is now but rather from a few years ago, so that person must have known us back then..."
Qing Luan understood what A-Song was implying; however, who would recognize a young Zhao Yun from years ago? Knowing Zhao Yun also meant knowing her, which was why Prime Minister Huang had such schemes in mind. She didn't know how many of her cards were being held by others, which left her feeling an unsettling anxiety.
That anxiety stemmed from uncertainty and lack of confidence.
In the carriage, silence reigned as the horses galloped. After a little over an incense stick's worth of time, they arrived. Jumping down from the carriage, Qing Luan led A-Song inside. When Bu Yun tried to follow, she turned to him and said, "This matter is not as simple as you think. If you don't want to drag the Bu Family deeper into trouble, then don't come along; this has nothing to do with you!"
She held no fondness for him since he was part of the Bu Family, but her attitude towards Brent was entirely different because he still harbored goodwill.
After hearing her words, Bu Yun hesitated and stopped. He knew that even if he followed along, he would only be a burden. It was better for him to stand still and wait for news quietly.
Once out of Bu Yun's sight, Qing Luan summoned the spirits to search for people while she and A-Song split up to look for clues...
"Zhao Yun, please be safe!" Qing Luan prayed fervently in her heart as she searched for him. "You have already lost your parents because of me; if I lose you too, I would rather have never found you at all, letting you wander alone. At least you would still be alive... Zhao Yun, I beg you, you must stay safe!"
With anxiety and a heart full of prayers, Qing Luan hurriedly searched the academy. Whenever she encountered a passing student, she would ask about Zhao Yun. After learning that nothing unusual had happened in the academy, she pondered where he might have gone... the back mountain? When her gaze fell upon the large mountain behind the academy, she held her breath for a moment before starting to walk in that direction.
Meanwhile, A-Song and his companions, unable to find anyone in the academy, headed toward the back mountain as well. Zhao Yun had indeed fled there... it was the only place where he could find temporary safety!
In his mischievous days, he often ventured into the mountains with friends to hunt and play, so he was quite familiar with the terrain. Realizing something was wrong, he ran toward the back mountain. As his pursuers followed, they gradually fell behind due to their unfamiliarity with the area. However, after a while, he was still spotted.
"Run, you little brat! Where do you think you're going?" The two men were out of breath and furious. Being toyed with in the forest and running in circles for over ten rounds would make anyone angry—especially since they hadn't even managed to touch him once. They wished they could just strike him down right then and there!
"Old Six, catch that brat and give him a good beating to relieve my anger," said another man, equally frustrated and thinking about how to vent his fury once they caught him.
Breathing heavily, Zhao Yun felt exhausted. The calm and wise Black Eyes kept a vigilant watch on the two men ahead. While they took a moment to catch their breath, he maintained his distance and rested as well. Whenever they began to chase again, he would quickly run off. This stalemate lasted for over an hour... He didn't know how much longer he could hold out or whether Bu Yun had found A-Song... His confidence waned as he could only endure this situation.
As they cursed at him in anger, he adjusted his breathing and tried hard to calm himself—Qing Luan had told him that no matter what happened or how dangerous the situation was, he must remain calm; panicking would only make things worse!
No matter how many principles he held onto, he was still just a child; ultimately, he was no match for two thugs and was eventually captured.
"Bang!" A fist slammed into Zhao Yun's stomach. He let out a muffled groan but didn't scream. He struggled desperately, but two adults easily overpowered a teenager like him. "Run! Go ahead and run! Damn it! After making me chase you for so long, today I'm going to make sure you suffer!"
"Old Six, this kid is still useful; don't kill him," said another man more calmly but did not stop Old Six from taking out his frustrations.
"Don't worry; we won't kill him. Hmph! If he doesn't die at our hands, he'll surely meet his end at the master's." Although they didn't know his identity, they remembered the master's furious expression when sending them to capture him; that memory fueled their reckless boldness.
"That's the master's business. We need to bring him back alive; that's the master's order!"
Old Six frowned, feeling dissatisfied yet helpless as he muttered, "Don't worry, I won't kill him!" However, this brat had been toying with them for so long; he wasn't about to let him off easily.
"You little brat, since you won't be living much longer anyway, why not entertain me a bit, ha ha..." As he spoke, he pulled out a shiny dagger from his pocket and waved it gleefully at Zhao Yun.
With a swift motion, the dagger pierced into Zhao Yun's thigh. He threw his head back and let out a miserable scream, "Ah..." Unable to retreat, he could only endure the pain.
"Ha ha... Just a moment ago, weren't you so arrogant? Now you know what pain feels like?" After stabbing deeply, the dagger was quickly withdrawn. The pitiful scream stirred the darkness within Old Six's heart; excitedly, he looked at the bloodied dagger and laughed maliciously.
