After attending two weddings, Hanno's wallet had thinned considerably, but that didn't stop the trend from continuing, as she received a third pink bombshell.
"Liu Zhaoren and Lansiya are getting married?" Hanno exclaimed in surprise. Although she knew Lansiya liked Liu Zhaoren and had been trying to set them up, wasn't this moving a bit too fast?
The expectant mother sipped her warm milk, leaning against a comfortable cushion. "Not too fast; they've been dating for over two months."
Hanno scoffed, "That's nothing compared to you and your guy jumping into bed before getting married without even dating."
Yang Yun shot her a glare. "Don't hit below the belt or bring up sensitive topics."
Hanno replied, "Do you think your guy is your sensitive topic?"
Yang Yun was furious. "Hanno!"
"Okay, okay!" Hanno raised her hands in surrender. "I won't joke about you and your guy anymore. Is that better?"
Yang Yun gave her a sidelong glance. "You better keep that promise; otherwise, I won't let my son recognize you as his godmother."
"Understood." Hanno saluted playfully and asked, "When did Liu Zhaoren and Lansiya start dating?"
"Right after that car accident," Yang Yun said, setting down her cup and shifting to find a more comfortable position. "Liu Zhaoren felt guilty for putting Lansiya in danger, so he visited her at the hospital whenever he could. Naturally, Lansiya seized the opportunity. There's an old saying: 'A man chases a woman across mountains, but a woman chases a man through gauze.' Lansiya went all out; she wouldn't give up until she won Liu Zhaoren over. Liu Zhaoren seemed completely heartbroken on your side, but once Lansiya made her move, he was touched, and they got together."
Yang Yun pushed the exquisite wedding invitation on the table toward Hanno. "Liu Zhaoren felt awkward about how he pursued you before, so he asked me to deliver this invitation to you. Are you going to their wedding?"
"Of course I'm going," Hanno replied as she tucked the invitation away. "We've been friends for years; if I don't go, it'll be awkward for them later."
Yang Yun nodded. "That's true. Actually, Liu Zhaoren didn't make his feelings clear back then; just pretend nothing happened between you two."
Hanno hummed in agreement and asked, "What about your devoted husband? How come he let you come out alone?"
Yang Yun explained, "He's dealing with some business matters. He wants to step back and live a peaceful life with me running a restaurant. He's handing over all his other business dealings to the brothers who have been with him."
"Hanno," said, "Your husband really values brotherhood, and what's even more commendable is his emphasis on family. If he wants to withdraw, then let him. If you run into any trouble in the future, your husband can come to me. There are some places where I still have some influence."
Due to the Foundation, Hanno had a good relationship with the military, and with the connection to Cousin-in-law, Hanno's hidden power was quite significant.
"Let me thank you on behalf of my husband first," Yang Yun said without being polite. The reason she mentioned her husband's plans was also to hint that she might need Hanno's help with something.
"Let your husband thank me in person," Hanno replied, gesturing with her chin. Yang Yun turned around and saw Yu Shu striding toward their table.
"You really keep a tight watch on him."
Yang Yun blushed slightly. "Jealous?"
Hanno scoffed, "I have a boyfriend myself; why would I be jealous of you?"
Yang Yun shot back, "Who says your boyfriend isn't around to care for you? That's why you're jealous of me!"
Hanno huffed in response.
As the two exchanged banter, Yu Shu had already reached their table and sat down next to Yang Yun. "What are you two talking about?"
Yang Yun replied, "About you. Didn't you go to the company? Why are you here?"
Yu Shu said, "I finished what I needed to do and came over."
He tested the temperature of the milk in his cup with his hand and said, "It's already cold; let's get a fresh hot one."
"No need," Yang Yun stopped him. "I've had enough; I don't want any more."
"Then make sure to tell me when you want to drink," he insisted.
Hanno turned her head away, not wanting to witness their affection; it made her teeth ache. Seizing the opportunity, Yang Yun shared Hanno's promise with Yu Shu.
Yu Shu sincerely thanked Hanno, "Hanno, thank you."
Hanno smiled, "I'm not helping you; I'm helping my future godson."
Yu Shu chuckled, "My son is fortunate to have you as his godmother."
Hanno asked, "Are you doing well now? If you have any difficulties, feel free to tell me."
Yu Shu replied, "Don't worry. After so many years of managing things, I still have some confidence in my judgment. As for those rivals, my brothers have already taken care of them."
Hanno felt relieved. "That's good. Yang Yun can also relax and focus on her pregnancy."
Yang Yun masked her emotions with a rough attitude. "It's all fine now; you're just overthinking!"
...
While Hanno was bombarded with pink bubbles, Elder Brother Li was also receiving his share of surprises. First was Geng Shi'an, who got married as soon as he returned to his hometown. Li Wei Feng couldn't leave the capital to attend Geng Shi'an's wedding due to his responsibilities in defending the city, but he sent a generous gift instead. Half of it was items that Hanno had transported from the modern world: two lighters, a box of diamond hairpins and pearl necklaces, a case of soap—all unwrapped—and a set of wooden checkers. At that time, checkers had just spread from Aoyama Village and hadn't yet reached Geng Shi'an's hometown... These scattered gifts might not be worth much in the modern world but greatly enhanced Geng Shi'an's reputation.
Next came the wedding of Yue Yunfei and Mo Yan, the Princess. Prince Qirui was marrying off his daughter with an imperial decree; regardless of their connections to Prince Qirui's residence or the Yue Family, everyone wanted to attend this grand banquet. Li Wei Feng, as Yue Yunfei's brother, had to participate. He would accompany the groom to pick up the bride and deal with various challenges posed by Prince Qirui's household. The more they valued their daughter, the more difficult they made things for the groom. Once the bride was carried away in her palanquin by her brothers, Yue Yunfei and his companions all breathed a sigh of relief. Elder Brother Li found himself in the easiest position; ancient challenges were nothing compared to modern ones, especially since he was a Cultivator—how could he be troubled by mere mortals? However, today’s event was centered around Yue Yunfei, so Elder Brother Li had to keep a low profile.
Once the bride arrived at Yue Residence, Elder Brother Li and his friends were ushered by the Steward of the Yue Family to the Flower Hall for drinks. Elder Brother Li was honest; unlike his beloved family member who cheated using True Essence, he genuinely competed in drinking—after all, they were brothers who had shared life and death together; how could he face them dishonestly? The result of their drinking contest left several tables in the Flower Hall collapsed, while only Elder Brother Li remained seated and even able to walk—though his mind was somewhat hazy.
Not wanting to rely on the Yue Family's servants for assistance, Elder Brother Li staggered out of the Flower Hall to get some fresh air in the garden. There weren't many people in the garden; all guests were gathered in the main hall and Flower Hall drinking. It was winter now; all the flowers in the garden had wilted and offered little to see. But Elder Brother Li wasn't there for sightseeing; he just needed fresh air to sober up. The cold wind brushed against his face, and the chilly air helped clear his mind a bit as he casually sat down on a rock by the lake.
The lake in Yue Family's garden was narrow and elongated, separating the inner and outer courtyards of Yue Residence. This side of the lake was the outer courtyard; on the other side lay the inner courtyard. Three spacious stone bridges connected both banks. However, since the distance between them was not far—about thirty meters at most—people on either side could chat easily across the lake.
Elder Brother Li leaned against a stone and closed his eyes to rest. Not long after, there was some commotion from across the lake; it seemed like some women had come out for fresh air. Elder Brother Li wanted to hide but was spotted first.
"Sister, there's someone over there."
"Oh! That's General Li." The sister seemed to recognize Elder Brother Li.
"Is it General Li that the master hopes for me to marry?" the maid asked.
Elder Brother Li felt quite helpless upon hearing this. Due to his youth and high position, many regarded him as a desirable match, hoping to marry their daughters to him in order to win his favor. If it weren't for the fact that he was still unmarried, many would have wanted to recruit him as a son-in-law. Elder Brother Li, feeling overwhelmed, publicly announced that he had a fiancée and requested the emperor's permission for marriage. Although the emperor did not know who the bride was, he happily agreed. This way, his trusted minister would not be swayed by others through marriage.
"It's a pity that General Li already has a fiancée," the lady said somewhat dejectedly. Elder Brother Li was both young and capable, yet many young ladies who dreamed of him as their ideal husband tore their handkerchiefs in despair upon learning he was already engaged.
"Sister, do you really want to marry General Li?" the maid asked.
"Of course! General Li is so handsome and outstanding; I would be willing to be his equal wife. It's just too bad that he only wants one person for life," the lady sighed, believing they were speaking softly enough that Li Wei Feng couldn't hear them. She then shared her feelings, "Why isn't General Li's lifelong partner me?"
"Sister..." The maid felt her heart flutter at the sight of the handsome Elder Brother Li. She thought to herself that if her sister married General Li, perhaps she could get closer to him and become his concubine.
"Sister, I have an idea." The maid bit her lip, making a decision to pursue General Li by any means necessary.
"What plan do you have?" the lady asked eagerly.
The maid leaned in close and whispered her plan into her sister's ear: "Sister, you can swim, right? Later on, pretend to fall into the lake and shout for help. When General Li comes to rescue you, there will definitely be some physical contact. At that moment, with your reputation at stake, General Li will have no choice but to marry you!"
The lady's eyes lit up with excitement as she repeatedly praised, "Amber, that's a brilliant idea! Let's do it your way!"
Unbeknownst to them, their conversation had already reached Elder Brother Li's ears.
