"That's good," Zhao Wenjing said, patting his chest, feeling a bit relieved.
"Then let's go," Shi Wannian said as he stood up.
"Senior Shi, wait a moment. I still have a friend who hasn't arrived," Ye Ming said.
"A friend? Male or female?" Shi Wannian's expression grew serious.
"Male," Ye Ming replied.
Shi Wannian fell silent, clearly displeased.
Zhao Wenjing quickly explained that he wasn't Ye Ming's boyfriend, which eased Shi Wannian's expression somewhat.
A few minutes later, Jiang Chen arrived at the café in a taxi. Upon seeing him, Ye Ming immediately stood up to greet him.
Noticing that Jiang Chen had taken a taxi, a mocking smile appeared on Shi Wannian's face, filled with disdain.
Ye Ming led Jiang Chen over to Zhao Wenjing and the others, introducing him by name but saying nothing else about him.
In fact, Ye Ming had only intended to invite Zhao Wenjing to join him for a meal with Jiang Chen. He hadn't expected her to bring along her boyfriend and even someone unrelated. Ye Ming felt quite helpless; there was no turning back now.
"Hello everyone!" Jiang Chen greeted politely.
"Now that everyone's here, let's go eat," Shi Wannian said lightly, his gaze toward Jiang Chen somewhat unfriendly.
"Today I'm treating you all to dinner, but I can't afford Greenery Pavilion. How about we choose another place?" Ye Ming suggested.
"With me around, you don't need to worry about expenses. Let's go; I'm treating," Shi Wannian said in an authoritative tone that left no room for refusal.
Zhao Wenjing and Sun Weiwu had long wanted to dine at Greenery Pavilion. With someone else treating, they were naturally delighted and quickly sided with Shi Wannian, leaving Ye Ming with no choice but to be dragged along.
Jiang Chen smiled faintly. With his keen perception, he could see the dynamics at play, especially Shi Wannian's eagerness to impress Ye Ming—clearly trying to pursue her.
Though Jiang Chen preferred smaller gatherings, he couldn't just turn around now that he was here. He decided to join them for the meal.
As they left the café, Shi Wannian took out his BMW car keys and waved them in front of Jiang Chen while giving him a meaningful glance.
The message was clear: "I have a BMW; you don't. I'm better than you!"
Jiang Chen felt speechless; it seemed Shi Wannian viewed him as a rival.
Shi Wannian gallantly opened the rear door of the BMW for Zhao Wenjing and Ye Ming to get in while Sun Weiwu took the front passenger seat. Ye Ming gestured for Jiang Chen to join them, but Shi Wannian blocked his way.
"My car is a four-seater, and it's already full. You should take another vehicle," Shi Wannian said calmly.
"Senior Shi, what do you mean by that? If Jiang Chen isn't going, then I'm not going either," Ye Ming replied, clearly displeased. She knew that Jiang Chen was not an ordinary person; someone of his caliber surely had luxury cars. The fact that he didn't drive one today must mean he was just being low-key. Shi Wannian's attitude towards Jiang Chen only fueled Ye Ming's dissatisfaction and made her dislike him even more.
Seeing Ye Ming about to leave, Shi Wannian had no choice but to compromise. "Then let's squeeze in."
Jiang Chen said nothing, too indifferent to argue with Shi Wannian.
He sat beside Ye Ming while Shi Wannian drove, and the group headed straight for Greenery Pavilion. As Shi Wannian observed how protective Ye Ming was of Jiang Chen, he couldn't help but think that there must be something between them. While driving, he contemplated how to embarrass Jiang Chen to assert his own dominance.
