"Let's prepare for this, Mingdu will arrive a bit earlier. You all can head back now," Chen Rui said, rubbing his forehead.
The initial bravado had been nearly extinguished by the cold water poured over them by the four team leaders, but once things were set, they could not be changed. This was a principle that Chen Rui had always adhered to.
"It seems there's no need to look for you; you're all right here." The door to the conference room swung open, and a burly figure blocked the sunlight streaming in, giving off an unexpectedly sacred aura.
Upon seeing this person, everyone present, including Chen Rui, couldn't help but frown. The first question was how this person had gotten in. The second was: what were they supposed to discuss now?
The newcomer was none other than Zhang Shi, and he certainly hadn't entered on his own. "Come on, Old Zhang, why are you just standing at the door?" came a familiar voice from behind Zhang Shi, belonging to client manager Xie Dongcheng.
"Old Xie, what's going on?" Chen Rui couldn't help but ask.
"Ah, I'm here to discuss specific work matters. I saw you all here and just came in directly."
"Well, if we weren't here, where else would we be?" Peng Hao sighed. "At least we don't have to wait until tomorrow."
"Yeah, haha." A few of them couldn't help but laugh; it seemed they could skip the formalities and jump straight into work discussions.
Everyone took their seats, and Xie Dongcheng began, "Actually, the task assigned to Zhang from above is to assist with the company's listing plan. Zhang insisted on coming over first to get a feel for things."
"If I don't understand the central operations of the entire company, how can I come up with a good plan? But honestly, I'm not sure about this issue. I'll do my best," Zhang Shi smiled.
"And what about our work?" Chen Rui asked. Although Zhang Shi was one of their own, he wasn't an employee of the company, so they still needed to address him appropriately.
"I'm not going to mess around with those kids anymore; let's refund thirty percent of the cash. Every bit saved is money for the country."
Chen Rui chuckled in agreement. According to Zhang Shi, whether or not they refunded that money ultimately belonged to the state anyway—what did it matter?
"You think that putting the money in your hands is still under the control of the state, right? Wrong! If this one million five hundred thousand is in my hands, I can generate benefits for the country exceeding five hundred thousand a year. If it's in yours, that money will be gone." Zhang Shi pointedly revealed Chen Rui's thoughts and explained.
Chen Rui felt a bit startled; there were not many who could see through his ideas without him saying a word, but now there was one more.
"Don't be surprised. If you can't even do this, how can you survive in the financial world? I'm here not only to explain things to you but also to ask for your help," Zhang Shi said with a smile.
"I'm happy to help."
"Good. I want you to secretly film the interactions with the other six people and eventually gather all seven of us together for some kind of event."
"Why? Gathering everyone isn't too difficult; after all, they will likely pay attention to this matter for a while. But filming is more troublesome. It has to be done secretly? I feel like being upfront about filming would be easier to understand," Chen Rui tossed his thoughts back to Zhang Shi.
"That won't work. If you openly state that you're filming the process, they will adopt an attitude as if they are interacting with clients, which is far from what we see in dreams. What I need is your normal interaction with them; whether they consider you a friend is also crucial data to collect."
Chen Rui immediately stood up. "Hey! Hey! What does it matter if they consider me a friend?"
"It doesn't matter to me, but it is critical for the entire mission. If merely a dream can establish a friendship, even if it's not a close one or one that is valued, think about whose friend it would be?" Zhang Shi became somewhat agitated but quickly adjusted his demeanor after realizing he had lost his composure.
"The entire upper class of China is connected through your company. Do you understand what that means? The overall flow of China's economy will be influenced by you. Some might call people like me financial vampires, but compared to your company, what does that make you? You are the biggest financial vampires!"
"Of course, this is just a hypothesis. If their attitude is average, then this hypothesis doesn't exist. But even if there's just a glimmer of hope, I still want it to succeed. If this hypothesis succeeds, your company's IPO project won't need Jicheng Investment's intervention at all; the entire upper class of China will come forward to buy shares, and those who get in on the ground floor will become overnight millionaires. This stock will become an indelible myth."
The more Zhang Shi spoke, the more excited he became; perhaps this was his true self—someone who enjoyed dealing with money, who felt joy when seeing red on the screen and motivation when seeing green. Perhaps that's just who he was—the person known as a financial vampire.
"Then let's do our best, but only our best. If someone exposes us at some point, I won't continue with this," Chen Rui reluctantly agreed.
"You really look like him," Zhang Shi said, looking at Chen Rui.
"Who? Everyone around me has been saying that lately. Do I look like some kind of celebrity?" Chen Rui joked involuntarily.
Zhang Shi's pupils moved slightly, and he awkwardly smiled. "Is that so? I was just kidding."
Chen Rui quietly noted Zhang Shi's unusual reaction but didn't spoil the mood by asking further. "Really? I think I resemble Andy Lau."
"With that face of yours, are you kidding me?" Wang Conghui interjected.
"Well, I'll take my leave now. Just send me the video once it's done. You must have collected quite a bit of my contact information; it's best to send it to my u1k email. That way, I'll see it faster," Zhang Shi waved his hand and turned to leave the conference room.
"I'm leaving too. What does it mean that you haven't called me in so long? Are we still brothers?" Xie Dongcheng boldly elbowed Chen Rui, causing him to gasp for breath.
"This is the consequence of your broken promises. See you later, everyone," Xie Dongcheng laughed as he left.
"That guy really hits hard," Chen Rui adjusted his breathing, trying to ease the pain, but it didn't help much.
Peng Hao chuckled, "You two still get along so well."
"Then your eyes must be blind," Chen Rui shot a glare at Peng Hao.
"It's all my fault for being blind and not seeing it, being completely deceived by you. This damn promise turned out to be nothing but a ridiculous lie," Peng Hao suppressed his laughter, singing lyrics that perfectly matched what had just happened.
"You guys should leave too. By the way, Xiong Kai, think of a way to deal with that hidden camera situation. I'll go alone, so you guys won't have to come," Chen Rui said helplessly, rubbing his forehead; he felt utterly powerless against this group of people.
"This is really a troublesome matter, isn't it? Usually, when it comes to secretly taking photos, a third-person perspective works best. It's easy to attract attention when focusing directly on the person you're talking to. However, even if we follow them, it probably won't have the same effect as Zhang Shi's. What a hassle," Xiong Kai shook his head. "Just give me some time; I'm not a machine cat."
"Okay, okay," Chen Rui replied with a smile.
"It's better to have headaches now than to have just pushed it away earlier. You're just too nice; most people who are overly nice end up with nothing good in the end," Yu Mingming chimed in from the side.
Chen Rui understood Yu Mingming's point. Being overly nice doesn't guarantee a good reputation, status, or honor. Most overly nice people end up getting hurt by reality, some choose to change, while others drag their wounded selves through life.
"I was just considering that he was doing it for the country too," Chen Rui forced a smile.
Yu Mingming looked at Chen Rui and decided not to say more. "Let's just leave it at that."
The group exited the conference room, and Liang Yu turned to Chen Rui. "What are we going to do next?"
"Oh right, next we should at least decide who to visit first," Chen Rui couldn't help but chuckle at the question.
"You already have an answer in mind, don't you? Given your personality, you'll start with the easier tasks and gradually move on to the harder ones. So the first place we'll go is probably Guo Luxing's group," Liang Yu posed dramatically like a detective.
"Patience is key; rushing won't get us anywhere. You're about to become my Watson," Chen Rui thought about reaching out to pat Liang Yu's head but was swatted away.
"Come on, you as Sherlock? Don't lower my impression of Sherlock Holmes," Liang Yu turned her head away, her shoulder-length hair swaying beautifully.
"You're smitten with me, aren't you? Bow down before my charm," Liang Yu suddenly blurted out and then quietly asked, "Is that too much of a mood killer?"
That girl! "It's not too much of a mood killer."
"What is that?"
"It's blinding my eyes."
"Get lost."
This girl really knows nothing about the world, Chen Rui thought at that moment. After two years, he had only managed to force her into becoming an assistant who couldn't even complete her tasks perfectly. While mocking his own failure, he couldn't help but sigh.
The girl had indeed dazzled him just now, but not in a bad way; it was her cuteness. Even after two years in the company, she hadn't completely shed her college aura and still radiated a youthful charm.
Chen Rui shook his head, swiped his work ID, and opened his computer, putting aside all other thoughts to focus on his work.
"Even Guo Luxing's team is not easy to deal with," Chen Rui murmured.
The newly updated information contained something very unsettling: Guo Luxing had quarreled with his father several times before giving up his board power. After that, his father's health had started to decline, and he was now hospitalized.
It seemed that resolving family conflicts had become an additional task for this situation, Chen Rui pondered. Perhaps they needed to resolve their family issues before addressing their relationship problems?
That would indeed be troublesome.
Liang Yu couldn't help but chuckle softly at the sight of Chen Rui's helpless expression and quietly exited the meeting room.
