Chen Rui followed Higashizaki out of the Waiting Hall, making his way through the staff passage towards the distant boarding area. As he spotted a group of people watching him beneath an Airbus, a flicker of guilt stirred within him.
He had kept them waiting instead.
Before boarding, Zhang Jun shook hands with Higashizaki once more. "Thank you for your assistance."
"You've been assigned seats at the back. Although it's Economy Class, it's the most secluded spot. Business Class is at the front where the crowd is overwhelming, so you'll have to bear with it. It’s just three and a half hours to Beijing anyway. The Cabin Crew and Captain have been informed; they’re all your people," Higashizaki addressed everyone. "I can't board with you, so I wish you a smooth journey."
As they boarded the plane, Chen Rui knew that the interior of a commercial flight could not compare to a G65, but special treatment was warranted in special circumstances. Besides, he usually flew Economy Class for business trips and didn’t feel dissatisfied just because he had experienced luxury twice before.
One person filled the last two rows entirely. Initially, they considered spreading out completely, but Zhang Jun quickly dismissed that idea with a single remark: "Are you going to break up the seats that were assigned?"
Just as everyone settled in, Chen Rui noticed that the airport shuttle had already arrived at the boarding gate.
Since it was a remote boarding gate, Business Class passengers also had to take the shuttle. Among the crowd, Chen Rui was not worried about those six people frantically searching for him.
Moreover, he couldn’t understand why they valued this person so much; the most troublesome part was that Chen Zijing looked exactly like him.
As Chen Rui had anticipated, although they boarded the first shuttle, they did not rush to find him among the crowd but instead sat comfortably in Business Class.
Flying on a commercial airline was quite boring; this was something Chen Rui often remarked after getting used to flying. He didn’t enjoy reading, watching movies, or playing games; his few hobbies revolved around interactions with friends. Now, he found himself experiencing that boredom firsthand. What made it worse was that he had been warned not to sleep during this flight—the underlying message being 'if you dare sleep, we’ll deal with you later.'
With nothing else to do, Chen Rui stared out of the window. Jiang Ming patted his shoulder and said, "Had I known it would be like this, I would have brought a deck of cards."
Time always flies during enjoyable moments. Before they knew it, their Flight had arrived at Duguo International Airport. After several reminders from the Cabin Crew, Chen Rui and his companions finally put away their cards.
There are two types of people who aren’t in a hurry to disembark: those with plenty of time and those who prefer to avoid the crowd.
However, the last two rows of passengers on this flight clearly did not belong to either category; they waited until nearly everyone else had exited before slowly making their way out.
As they passed through Business Class, someone grabbed Chen Rui's right hand. This action made those following him tense up immediately.
Chen Rui turned quickly and met a clear gaze from behind him along with Qin Xionglin and Cui Hongming. "My friend. You all go ahead."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Jun turned back to look curiously. Suddenly, a voice from his right broke in with an odd tone: "Oh! Isn’t that Zhang? What’s up with sitting in Economy Class? Wait—wait! How do you have time to travel abroad? Are these all your subordinates?" Qin Xin chimed in mischievously, her mouth holding a candy shaped like something reminiscent of a delinquent high school student.
"I thought it was someone else. Turns out it's you, Qin the Boss. It seems you've relinquished power for a few years now and don't want to be in charge anymore," Zhang Jun retorted, gesturing to the others, "You all can leave. I need to catch up with an old friend."
Chen Rui wanted Sheryl to let go of her hand, but Li Xue tightly gripped Chen Rui's wrist, using both hands to prevent her from escaping.
Chen Rui looked helplessly at Zhang Jun, who waved his hand dismissively. "You can stay."
Eventually, even the Cabin Crew left, and when only eight people remained in the cabin, Wang Xinzhuo spoke up, "Is he really not Zijing?"
"No," Zhang Jun firmly denied. "Though he does look quite similar." He then stared at Chen Rui's face as if lost in thought.
"Don't look at me like that; I can't handle it," Chen Rui hurriedly pushed Zhang Jun's face away.
"I think it's more than just a resemblance," Qin Xin said, leaning forward with her hands on the front row of seats, her eyes fixed on Zhang Jun. "What about you?"
Zhang Jun smirked sarcastically. "More than just a resemblance? I initially thought so too, but after spending time together, you'll see the differences. Chen Rui is a bit sentimental, but compared to Zijing, he's quite far off."
"We shouldn't monopolize the plane. You're a government official; you can't delay the flight," Wang Xinzhuo stood up and half-forced everyone off the plane.
After parting ways at the airport, Chen Rui and his group boarded a company shuttle bus. Normally, they wouldn't have such treatment; if it weren't for the plane incident, Zhang Jun would have disbanded them right at the airport.
Once the shuttle bus entered the company's underground parking lot, Zhang Jun instructed everyone, "Everything about this overseas trip is a secret mission. Don't make it public."
"Does that include the part where we almost died?" Chen Rui asked, only to receive eye rolls from everyone.
"Well, we didn't die, did we? So everything remains confidential and is to be handled as top secret. Understood?" Zhang Jun changed his tone to one of serious discussion, resembling a military instructor reprimanding cadets.
"Understood."
Back at his office, Chen Rui felt an inexplicable sense of happiness—perhaps it was relief from surviving a near-death experience or maybe because he had made a few wealthy 'friends.' However, none of this could be shared with others; that was the greatest sorrow for someone like Chen Rui.
"Back already? What were you doing? Did you run off somewhere to charm that big sister again?" As soon as he entered the office area, he heard a snarky voice.
Turning around, he saw Peng Hao intently staring at his computer screen while his fingers flew across the keyboard.
"Seeing you makes me not want to go back at all. What are you doing?" Chen Rui walked over to Peng Hao and quickly forcefully closed the window.
Peng Hao was momentarily stunned, mechanically turning his neck. "You..."
Chen Rui didn't expect such a strong reaction from him. Under normal circumstances, the only reason Peng Hao would be so focused would be if he were chatting with a beautiful woman, but it seemed that the situation was a bit different now.
"Don't tell me you're working," Chen Rui said in a mock horror tone. "How could that be?"
"The fact is, I rarely work this hard, and you went ahead and stopped me from working just to keep me from overexerting myself. Ah! I will remember your kindness," Peng Hao said, placing his left hand on his chest and raising his right hand high, giving off a strong romantic vibe at first glance.
"Get lost! What are you doing? That doesn't matter; where did you get the original document?" Chen Rui hurriedly pressed for answers, not caring about Peng Hao's feelings. If Peng Hao was really working, it would just be organizing materials, so he wasn't worried about any documents going missing.
"It was Xiong Kai who got it. I originally planned to show it to you once I finished, but never mind. With your personality, you probably went straight to Xiong Kai to get the original after hearing that," Peng Hao leaned back against his chair and stretched lazily with both hands raised above his head.
Indeed, as soon as Chen Rui heard those two words from Peng Hao, he walked away directly toward the Record Office.
The office was essentially a place for everyone to maintain discipline; after all, aside from their dreams, there wasn't much for them to do at the moment. However, the Recording Team was an exception.
To facilitate post-processing work, the Recording Team provided detailed information about clients before, during, and after their dreams, along with psychological dynamics and activity records after the dreams. Therefore, the Recording Team was still quite busy and showed no signs of relaxation like other groups.
Xiong Kai's office was at the very back in a separate room. Chen Rui pushed the door open and saw that Xiong Kai's state was similar to Peng Hao's, except for the sound of fingers tapping on the keyboard.
"The data is in folder three of version A. Just take it and remember to swap it out; there are no backups," Xiong Kai said without looking up.
"How did you know it was me?" Chen Rui asked as he found the folder.
"You're the only one on this floor who lacks manners," Xiong Kai pointed out regarding Chen Rui's habit of barging in.
"I don't think so. Is it noisy? You're using a mechanical keyboard," Chen Rui laughed. "No wonder you look older."
"I like it; mechanical keyboards have texture. It feels alive and real." The sound of typing noticeably paused for a moment before returning to its previous rhythm.
"I'm leaving; you'll have to come get it yourself later. I might forget," Chen Rui said as he exited the office.
The sound of fingers tapping on keyboards in the office had faded away. "It's not that easy to forget; it's just that I'm too lazy," Xiong Kai said with a smile, shaking his head as the high-frequency sounds resumed.
Chen Rui walked into his "office," which was actually the collective meeting room. As he entered, he saw Liang Yu sprawled across the table, fast asleep. Getting closer, he noticed drool at the corner of her mouth and couldn't help but chuckle. "Where did this girl run off to last night?"
He gently nudged Liang Yu awake. "Go wash your face; it's time to start working."
"Oh? Oh. Oh!" The three varying tones of "oh" indicated that Liang Yu was now awake. Chen Rui settled into a chair and opened a file folder. Neatly arranged in front of him were pages filled with regular script Chinese characters. For various reasons, most members of the Recording Team preferred using paper and pens when documenting clients' post-dream activities. According to their philosophy, high technology could sometimes be unreliable or inconvenient; the best recording method was the most primitive one.
Chen Rui supported this approach, and over time, most members of the Recording Team had developed impressive penmanship.
Time: 5 PM after the dream ended
Clients: Guo Luxing, Lin Yan
Event: The two went together to City One Hospital. Due to certain reasons, internal conditions could not be observed. They exited the hospital together after nine minutes and headed to Guo Luxing's residence in Yujing Garden.
...
"Hospitals?" Chen Rui rubbed his temples. He had been sleeping poorly lately, resulting in a persistent dull ache in his head.
"You just got back and you're already eager to work; you really are a workaholic!" Liang Yu said as she walked in, rubbing her eyes.
