Chen Rui and Liang Yu had not yet returned to the office when the phone started ringing incessantly. Chen Rui knew it was Xu Yao and Xu Tao calling, but sometimes a little resistance was necessary to make things feel more challenging.
In the end, he simply put his phone on silent, choosing to ignore the frantic calls from Xu Yao and Xu Tao.
"Is this really okay? Just ignoring them like this seems a bit excessive," Liang Yu remarked, watching Chen Rui silence his phone with dissatisfaction.
"If we don't put on a show, they'll just think we're foolish. Right now, I'm putting on a bit of a front to make them believe in this plan even more. Can we not afford to act a little aloof? Is this contract not worth their pursuit?" Chen Rui countered, glancing at his watch as he asked Xiong Kai, "Have their positions changed?"
"Of course! If you keep them hanging like this, they'll definitely bite. You're almost becoming a psychologist!" Xiong Kai's laughter came through the watch. "They're heading to the office, just behind you. But don't worry about them catching up; they're not as fast as you. They probably haven't been fooled enough to be dizzy yet."
"Oh really? When do you think they'll arrive at the office?" Chen Rui asked with a smile.
"They should get there in about four minutes, around eleven minutes after you arrive," Xiong Kai replied with a mischievous tone. "I bet you're planning to leave the office and lock the door behind you, making it look like no one is there. Am I right?"
"How could there be no one? At least there's the security guard. You should hurry and leave; I won't be going either. Just let the guard know that no one will be working late tonight," Chen Rui said with a grin.
"Then I'll head out now. I'll shut off the signal transmission from the watch immediately; just treat it like an ordinary digital watch," Xiong Kai said, and with that, the background light on the watch flashed once, indicating that his work was done.
Chen Rui smirked as he looked at Liang Yu, who was dressed in formal attire. "I'll give you a ride. Are you heading home or going to your boyfriend's place?"
"What would I go to his place for at this hour?" Liang Yu replied, puzzled.
"Don't think only girls get jealous. Just because you set your phone to silent doesn't mean I don't know what's going on. It still vibrates and makes some noise; I can imagine he's probably anxious enough to climb the walls right now," Chen Rui chuckled.
Liang Yu scoffed at him. "You have quite the keen ears, but there's no need for your concern. You should find someone for yourself first before worrying about me. Our relationship is great, but you're getting on in years and still single—doesn't that embarrass you?"
Chen Rui waved his hand dismissively. "I already have my bride; she's eager to marry me. But I still prioritize work..."
"There's a cow on top!" Liang Yu mocked. "If anyone is eager to marry you right now, even if it's a man, then I must be your daughter!"
"Hey!" Chen Rui slapped the steering wheel and laughed. "You are already my daughter, aren't you?"
A playful punch landed on Chen Rui's waist.
As Chen Rui dropped Liang Yu off at her doorstep, he joked, "It's true that a girl grows up too fast." He pretended to shake his head nonchalantly.
"Get lost, get lost! Hurry up and go; out of sight, out of mind," Liang Yu said, pretending to hit him. However, her high heels made her lose balance and she stumbled backward.
Seeing this, Chen Rui quickly stepped forward, grabbing Liang Yu's hand with one hand and wrapping his other arm around her waist, moving gracefully as if they were dancing.
Liang Yu frowned and pushed Chen Rui away as she regained her balance. She pretended to be disgusted and brushed off her clothes. "Just a moment of carelessness and your wolfish nature is exposed! Honestly, knowing your true self, I still let you take advantage of me this much. I really deserve it!" After saying that, she wiped the corner of her eye and looked up, her eyes sparkling.
Chen Rui rubbed his forehead. "I really don't know how your boyfriend can stand a girl like you."
"I treat different people in different ways. Just like the old saying goes, talk to people like people and talk to ghosts like ghosts," Liang Yu said with a playful smile at Chen Rui.
"It's your turn to educate me now," Chen Rui waved his hand dismissively. "Alright then, get some rest."
"Hey!" Liang Yu pulled out her phone and pointed the screen at Chen Rui's face. "What time is it? What time is it? What time is it! Don't you have to work? My goodness."
The phone screen displayed the large numbers: 1:08. Chen Rui brushed Liang Yu's hand aside. "Tomorrow! I don't care; if you don't come tomorrow, I'll mark you absent." With that, he turned and got into his car, speeding away.
Liang Yu stomped her foot in frustration and picked up her phone to call Chen Rui for harassment. But then she suddenly saw something that made her beam with joy as she headed upstairs.
Chen Rui was not driving fast. Through the rearview mirror, he noticed Liang Yu's change and couldn't help but smile wryly, shaking his head as he headed home.
Chen Rui had already understood the situation. Ming! You have to go to work, but Ming's shift starts in the morning, which means today can be a day off. Chen Rui thought that if this girl hadn’t noticed the issue, he would let her continue working; since she had, he would let her take a break.
This matter was originally a trick played on Chen Rui by his old boss, who found Chen Rui too honest and could no longer bear to make that joke with him.
However, Liang Yu quickly caught on to Chen Rui's verbal loophole, and from the smile on her face, it was clear she would take full advantage of this break without hesitation.
"Out of touch with the times," Chen Rui silently mocked himself.
At the hotel:
Xu Tao drove the Jaguar slowly to a stop in front of the hotel. Seeing that all the lights in the building were off, he couldn't help but chuckle before turning around to head home.
"Aren't you going up?" Xu Yao asked.
"They're just playing games with us! But they have their reasons. Let's be patient and wait until tomorrow; it's worth it," Xu Tao replied with a smile. His younger brother had excellent work and negotiation skills but lacked some understanding of social nuances.
"Isn't waiting here until dawn more sincere?" Xu Yao suggested with a grin. "After all, we’ve done this kind of thing before."
Xu Tao paused for a moment before pulling into a parking space. He looked at Xu Yao and said, "You really are a genius."
"Not a genius; I'm just nostalgic," Xu Yao replied lightly.
The two entered the hotel lobby, ignoring the Front Desk Attendant, and laid down on the lobby sofa without concern for appearances, comfortably resting their feet on the coffee table.
The reason they could act so recklessly was that they knew this hotel was never open to outsiders; all the rooms were marked as 'occupied.'
The Lobby Attendant certainly did not dare to be negligent and hurriedly informed his superior. Xiang Xiao, woken up in the middle of the night, was furious. Upon checking, he realized it was a client of Chen Rui's and quickly called him.
Chen Rui had just entered his home when he pulled out his phone and saw there were still calls coming in. Frowning in annoyance, he muttered, "So persistent? No way." When he saw it was Xiang Xiao calling, he quickly answered. Xiang Xiao's furious voice blared from the speaker, "You bastard! What kind of business are you running? Clients showing up in the middle of the night with no one to attend to them—what are you doing?"
Chen Rui held the phone away from his ear and waited for Xiang Xiao to finish his tirade before saying, "Is it two people?"
"Yes, just two. They seem to be brothers. You better figure something out quickly. I thought something serious had happened when I got a call at this hour! This is all your fault!"
"Alright, alright. Let them wait; don't worry about them." Chen Rui replied vaguely and hung up the phone without fear of any repercussions from Xiang Xiao because he knew that Xiang Xiao's anger wasn't really about business issues.
The real reason for Xiang Xiao's fury was being woken up in the middle of the night. It was said that he used to be an intelligence officer in the military and had trouble sleeping, which had led to this lingering issue.
Chen Rui chuckled as he lay on his bed, a slight smile playing on his lips. "This is... shameless."
The next morning.
As usual, Chen Rui dressed in sportswear and jogged to work. Upon entering the hotel lobby, he spotted two people lying on the sofas on either side.
Xu Tao noticed Chen Rui's arrival and quickly got up to straighten his clothes. After pondering for a moment, he extended his right hand.
Chen Rui smiled and shook his hand. "What brings you here?"
"About what happened last night—my brother wants to sign too. Additionally, my wife, father, mother, and child also want to sign, but they won't need to enter the dream; we'll proceed directly with a donation." Xu Tao explained.
"Alright, follow me. However, we can only sign for the current individuals right now. This document cannot be taken out of this building by anyone other than us, so the other four will need to come here in person," Chen Rui explained with a smile to Xu Tao, already anticipating this situation.
"There's one more question. What does 'nearly' mean regarding the implementation date of this plan? How close is it?" Xu Tao attempted to extract some useful information from Chen Rui, realizing that asking directly might yield the best results.
Chen Rui led Xu Tao and Xu Yao into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. "There are orders above us that we cannot disclose directly. But I can tell you that the trial phase has lasted four years and seven months, and the entire plan has been in motion for nearly ten years now. Given this, can you understand what 'nearly' refers to in terms of specific timing?"
Xu Tao calculated silently in his mind. 'If judged by the trial phase, it could be roughly six months at the shortest. If based on the overall progress, it could take as long as four years. So, at best six months and at worst four years. That's fine; I can wait.'
Chen Rui was well aware of Xu Tao's calculations and smiled. "Actually, the feedback mentioned in this agreement regarding Members is not entirely uniform. I'm not sure if you're aware of that."
"Are you referring to feedback based on points? Although I don't know how points are earned, can it be understood that the earlier one becomes a Member, the more money they pay, and thus the higher their Member points?" Xu Tao asked.
"Yes, that's essentially correct. After all, we can't treat someone who just joined as a Level 1 Member for one year the same as someone who has been a Level 1 Member for several years; that would be unfair," Chen Rui replied with a smile.
Upon arriving at Chen Rui's Private Office, Chen Rui pulled a folder from the filing cabinet and handed a document to Xu Tao. "After you sign this, please give me the original document from yesterday, and I'll provide you with a copy."
Xu Tao carefully reviewed the document from start to finish before agreeing to let Xu Yao sign it.
Xu Tao's meticulousness contrasted sharply with Guo Luxing's boldness; each had their own unique charm as leaders.
