"So, this is how it turned out?" Chen Rui scolded the three people in front of him. They hunched their heads down, looking like students caught in a mistake, obediently listening to his reprimand.
"Exactly," Liu Xin chimed in, adding fuel to the fire. "You can't even handle this little thing. What are you good for? Useless, a waste of space."
Chen Rui shot Liu Xin a glare. "You're not much better. Just stay over there; I don't have time for you."
Fifteen minutes earlier:
"Did you drive here?" Chiba Kaede asked.
Chen Rui met Liu Xin's gaze and felt a bit awkward, shaking his head. "No."
"Perfect! Let's take my car; I know a route that can save us half the time." The three of them rushed to the underground parking lot and arrived in front of a Ferrari Fk. The visual impact this car had on Chen Rui was no less than what Las Vegas had on Liu Xin.
Chen Rui carefully observed the sports car. It was a 2015 model, quite old by now, but it still held its place among the elite sports cars.
Seeing Chen Rui's astonished expression and sparkling eyes, Chiba Kaede immediately realized he was also a car enthusiast. "One of only twenty-nine in the world! Hurry up and get in; you can hold onto him."
Since this sports car was designed as a two-door, two-seater, it meant that the passenger seat was destined to accommodate two people.
Once inside the car, Chen Rui understood why Chiba Kaede said, "You can hold onto him." The seatbelt was too short to fasten directly around Liu Xin, and since they were in a hurry and couldn't skip wearing seatbelts, Chen Rui had no choice but to hold Liu Xin tightly. Although it might not serve much purpose, at least it provided some psychological comfort.
Reluctantly, Liu Xin sat on Chen Rui's lap. "Can we switch places?"
"You’re thinner than me and not taller either; you sitting on my lap is just right," Chen Rui explained scientifically, not grasping the implication behind Liu Xin's words.
Liu Xin's face turned red with embarrassment as he reached for the door handle. "I’ll take a taxi instead."
Before Liu Xin could reach it, Chiba Kaede had already stepped on the gas. The parking spot was excellent—a long straight line leading directly to the exit. Chiba Kaede skillfully unleashed the power of the 66 V1 engine, revving it up to maximum output as they shot out of the parking space.
Liu Xin stared at the road ahead and shouted frantically at Chen Rui, "Hold me tight!"
The Fk's transmission system came from F1 racing, with shift times so low they were almost negligible. Combined with high driving skills, this Ferrari sped down Las Vegas Boulevard, quickly becoming the target of traffic police pursuit.
"Your driving skills are impressive." Chen Rui watched as Chiba Kaede continuously shifted gears, slowing down and speeding up, maintaining a speed of around 15 kilometers per hour on this heavily trafficked road. It was almost cinematic.
"In Tokyo, it's much worse than this," Chiba Kaede replied, catching Chen Rui off guard and leaving him at a loss for words.
"Where's your shortcut? Aren't we still on the main road?" Liu Xin's face conveyed a sense of urgency, as if he were about to perish if they didn't hurry.
"Just a moment," Chiba Kaede responded, then executed a beautiful drift, the rear wing of the Ferrari brushing past a Ford on the left lane.
The Ferrari turned into an alley that resembled a pedestrian passage between residential buildings. Fortunately, there was no one around at that moment.
As the Ferrari emerged from the alley, it faced a main road at a T-junction. Chiba Kaede didn't slow down and charged straight through the T-junction, leaving behind a trail of cars slamming on their brakes and the wailing of sirens.
"Can we please obey traffic rules? Doing this could get you your license revoked!" Liu Xin shouted in a near-panic state; it seemed he wasn't cut out for such reckless behavior.
"Just hold on a bit longer; we're almost there," Chiba Kaede said, glancing ahead where several tall buildings were already visible.
"We can't go directly through here, can we? I remember we need to circle around up front. Do you have a plan?" Chen Rui asked while looking at the map on his phone.
"Yeah."
Suddenly, the Ferrari slowed down and entered a hotel parking lot but showed no signs of stopping. It quickly exited through another exit, facing the building where they lived.
"Impressive! You really pulled that off," Liu Xin said, patting Chiba Kaede on the shoulder before hurriedly jumping out of the Ferrari.
The three of them rushed into the building.
Seeing that the elevator was still on a high floor, Chen Rui decisively abandoned it.
"Forget the elevator; let's take the stairs." Since their apartment was on the fourth floor, taking the stairs would be faster.
They reached the fourth floor, and when Chen Rui saw three people leaning against the wall outside their door, he walked over and startled Chiba Kaede.
"What’s going on inside?" Chen Rui asked.
"There's been no movement, but they’re still inside."
Chen Rui turned to Chiba Kaede and explained, "My subordinate saw a masked person with a knife in your house, but we don’t know the specifics."
Chiba Kaede paused for a moment, then couldn’t help but laugh awkwardly.
"Well, we can't completely blame them," Liu Xin chimed in, switching to his usual good-natured mode, trying to improve his image.
"It’s not their fault. If we’re talking about this situation, no one is to blame; it’s all just a coincidence." Chiba Kaede approached and patted Chen Rui on the shoulder.
Here’s what happened: Yuki Chiba had applied a layer of volcanic mud mask and was preparing to cook. Suddenly remembering her clothes were almost dry, she grabbed a kitchen knife and went out to the balcony. When she returned inside, Liu Xin's group happened to see her and mistakenly thought the kidnapper had arrived, leading to a comical misunderstanding.
Chen Rui shrugged and suddenly noticed Yuki Chiba hiding behind Chiba Kaede, reluctant to show her face.
Chiba Kaede noticed Chen Rui's gaze and looked over, realizing that his daughter was still a bit scared of the group. He smiled and said, "This is my daughter, Yuki Chiba. She’s a little shy around strangers, but she’ll warm up once she gets to know you."
Yuki Chiba reluctantly peeked out, her eyes glistening with tears; it was clear she had been genuinely frightened.
Seeing her face made Chen Rui pause for a moment before turning to the others and saying, "Look how scared she is!"
He looked back at Yuki Chiba and felt an unexpected tension—not necessarily directed at her but rather at Li Xue, as the two girls looked remarkably alike. This made Chen Rui hesitant to meet the girl’s gaze directly.
Using his broken Japanese, he said to her, "Hello."
To his surprise, she smiled suddenly and replied in standard English with a slight Tokyo accent, "My English is quite good; you don’t need to struggle with your broken Japanese."
Chen Rui chuckled awkwardly and turned to Chiba Kaede. "The four people behind me are here to protect you, so please try not to separate. Otherwise, we won’t have enough manpower."
"Understood, understood." Chiba Kaede nodded. "I hope you can solve the case quickly, and I have a request."
"Please go ahead," Chen Rui replied, though he felt uneasy about it, he agreed out of habit.
"Take my daughter to the FBI headquarters until the crisis is resolved." Chiba Kaede's words stunned everyone.
"Dad," Yuki Chiba clearly disagreed with the plan, trying to resolve the issue by acting cute.
"But," Chen Rui thought, how will you manage then?
Chiba Kaede waved his hand, indicating that he understood. "I know your operations are confidential. You can use that drug that causes temporary blindness and keep her under house arrest. She won't know any of your information."
Chen Rui was about to speak when Liu Xin shouted from behind, "You old bastard, don't you know that drug has side effects? And house arrest? That's your own daughter!"
"This way she will be absolutely safe," Chiba Kaede said calmly. "This way she won't die."
"Dad," Yuki Chiba's tears fell as if something deep inside her had been touched.
"I understand," Chen Rui said quietly.
"However, according to orders from above, we won't abandon you. So these four will continue their protective mission, and I will take your daughter to our branch set up here. It will be completely safe there."
"Thank you very much." Chiba Kaede deeply bowed to Chen Rui. Then he wiped away the tears on his daughter's cheek and softly said, "If you must hate someone, hate me. Don't blame them; they are just doing their duty." With that, he turned and left the room.
Liu Xin looked at Chen Rui, who was dissatisfied and said, "Hurry up and follow! Have you forgotten what your mission is?"
"I will definitely ensure his safety! I will complete the mission!" Liu Xin smiled and gave Chen Rui an unstandard American salute like in the movies before running after Chiba Kaede.
Only Chen Rui and Yuki Chiba remained in the room. Chen Rui was momentarily stunned, then ruffled his hair and said, "Pack your things; get ready to come with me."
"Just like this?" Yuki Chiba asked with confusion, her eyes filled with intense unease.
"Of course not, we don't have much there. You'll need to bring your daily necessities and clothes," Chen Rui misunderstood her meaning.
"I meant, do I not need to take that blindness medicine?"
"Have you watched too many Hollywood blockbusters?" Chen Rui was exasperated with the father and daughter duo. He didn't know how the FBI operated, but based on his estimation, in such situations, they would either directly refuse or agree without resorting to these manipulative tactics to control the protected individuals.
Yuki Chiba packed her luggage relatively quickly; there really wasn't much to take—just a bag of clothes and a pack of daily necessities. For a girl in her twenties, it seemed rather sparse.
Chen Rui didn't have much either, so he took her in a taxi back to the building where their division was located.
"What exactly do you all do for work?" After realizing that Chen Rui wasn't as cold-hearted as she had imagined, Yuki Chiba began to ask questions, leaving Chen Rui feeling quite helpless.
At that moment, a phone call came in, providing a timely distraction for Chen Rui. After apologizing, he answered the call.
"Hello! Boss, we've been stopped by the traffic police. What should we do?" Liu Xin's excited voice came through the line, sounding as if he had just been injected with adrenaline.
"What should we do? Don't you know? Why do you rely on me for everything? What can you do?" Chen Rui was frustrated; ever since entering this dream, Liu Xin had been getting on his nerves, increasing his lung capacity significantly.
"Okay, I got it. I'll handle it!" Liu Xin said with a laugh before hanging up.
Suddenly, an ominous feeling surged within Chen Rui.
