Chen Rui settled into the modified Chevrolet's driver's seat and pulled out a walkie-talkie hidden beneath. "All teams, report your positions!"
"Team One reporting! Captain Peng Hao, six members. We have already begun the pursuit!" Peng Hao's cheeky voice immediately came through the walkie-talkie.
"Team Two reporting! Captain Ye Han, five members. We are currently heading to Las Vegas Boulevard with the intention of intercepting." Ye Han replied leisurely, "However, the road conditions here aren't great. I hope you won't push too hard during your chase; otherwise, we might miss our chance to intercept."
"Understood!" Peng Hao replied with a sense of self-awareness.
"Can you not use the public channel for your love talk? It's really annoying," Liu Xin's roar startled Chen Rui. "Team Three reporting! Captain Liu Xin, six members. We are on our way to High Entrance."
"Team Four reporting! Captain Zhan Min, six members. We... um, where are we right now?" Zhan Min's goofy voice sparked laughter over the walkie-talkie. "We're in pursuit, oh, I see Vehicle One!"
"Wait! Ye Han, why are you here?" Chen Rui was also confused by their chatter and took a moment to process it.
Ye Han's cold voice cut through the air, leaving Chen Rui speechless. "I wanted to come."
"Alright then, let's move slowly!" Li Xue climbed into the passenger seat of the Chevrolet, urging Chen Rui to drive.
Chen Rui tossed the walkie-talkie to Li Xue. "With me here, do you think you'll fall behind?" He pointed at the tachometer.
Li Xue glanced at the tachometer, calmly fastened her seatbelt, and suddenly felt the entire car launch forward.
The Chevrolet hit a hundred kilometers per hour in just a few seconds. Fortunately, traffic control was temporarily in effect nearby; otherwise, they would have surely crashed upon exiting.
"Which route are we taking?" Li Xue opened the car's GPS and looked at Chen Rui.
"We need to closely follow our target; otherwise, we'll lose them. If we try to intercept by taking too many different routes beforehand and they don't fall for it, what then?" Chen Rui replied with a smile.
"The target has been entered. We are currently 4 kilometers away, and the target is moving at approximately 7 kilometers per hour. At our current speed, it will take us about ten minutes to catch up, assuming the road conditions remain good," Li Xue reported, her long fingers deftly manipulating the touchscreen.
Chen Rui drove while occasionally glancing at Li Xue, smiling as he asked, "Aren't you worried they'll get angry?"
"Why would I be? As long as I'm happy, that's what matters. We're here to have fun anyway," Li Xue replied with a smile.
Chen Rui thought about it and realized she was right; after all, they were spending money for enjoyment, so why impose restrictions that could lead to unhappiness?
"Attention! Attention! The target is about to enter a blind spot in the surveillance. I won't be able to track it from here, so make sure you don't lose sight of it!" Lujie communicated through the intercom.
"That's not good news," Chen Rui chuckled.
Peng Hao scoffed at this. "What’s there to worry about with me around? Just because I can't run fast doesn't mean I can't drive fast!"
"I can see the target now!" Zhan Min chimed in.
"Don't lose sight of it!" Chen Rui urged again. "I should be there in about eight minutes. Damn!" Suddenly, a trailer truck appeared in front of him, forcing him to slam on the brakes. However, the speed of the Chevrolet and the effects of inertia caused it to collide with the truck's trailer.
"Thank goodness this car is modified by the FBI; otherwise, we’d be meeting our maker," Li Xue mocked.
"It's not meeting our maker; it's meeting our fate," Chen Rui replied with a wry smile as the furious truck driver jumped out and approached the Chevrolet.
Li Xue shot Chen Rui an exasperated look. "You’re making me want to shoot you and then shoot myself."
This traffic accident was clearly due to the Chevrolet's disregard for traffic regulations, and the truck driver was likely coming over to hold Chen Rui accountable.
"Attention, everyone. We estimate that we won't make it in eight minutes, so you'll have to keep up on your own," Chen Rui said helplessly.
"It doesn't matter whether you're there or not," Peng Hao replied nonchalantly.
"Alright, leave it to me," Zhan Min's voice carried a hint of excitement.
"Hey! Brother! How are you driving?" The Driver came over and knocked on the door of the Chevrolet. Clearly, he recognized the car's value and was somewhat restrained; otherwise, he might have punched the glass, even though he knew his hand could break without breaking through.
"Um? We'll handle all compensation matters, but before that, could you tell me if there's a nearby car dealership? One where we can pick up a car immediately?" Chen Rui said respectfully.
...
"Where is he heading? The road conditions here are only going to get worse," Peng Hao frowned and asked. The Buick in front was consistently exceeding everyone's budget, and the chosen route was erratic; whenever there was a clear road, it veered onto a bad one, completely disregarding logic.
"Attention! Attention! The target is about to enter the underground tunnel!" Zhan Min alerted Peng Hao.
"Okay, I'll take the road while you follow closely. This tunnel has no branches; there's only one exit near the intersection of Highway 515 and Route 59. Ye Han! You need to hurry over and block the exit!" Peng Hao commanded in place of Chen Rui. "The underground passage should be faster; I might not make it in time. Ye Han, you must get there before them and set up a blockade!"
"Understood, I'm on my way," Ye Han replied as he switched to the left lane, executing a perfect drift at the intersection before speeding away, leaving behind a chaotic scene.
"I think I'll arrive first; I'll take the highway and should reach in two minutes," Liu Xin said with a smile. "With this speed, there's no way he'll escape."
Zhan Min closely followed the target vehicle. That Buick business model had clearly been privately modified; how could an ordinary GL8 perform like a sports car? No! It felt like it was racing.
Zhan Min struggled to keep up in the FBI-modified Chevrolet SUV; that GL8 was just too agile!
"I guess we won't make it; this place is completely blocked," Peng Hao's weak voice came through the intercom, and it seemed they were indeed stuck.
"Good job! The traffic conditions here are starting to worsen as well. I estimate that if we go a bit further, we'll be completely jammed," Zhan Min said, somewhat pleased. The poor road conditions ahead were not only a problem for him but also for Buick.
The GL8 moved into the left lane and suddenly accelerated. Just as Buick was about to scrape against the wall, it sharply turned right. Under the astonished gaze of the Zhan Min Group, Buick successfully entered a one-sided driving state and slowly edged toward the wall.
Due to the curved design of the tunnel walls, Buick easily pressed its left wheels against the wall, smoothly passing through the congested section where vehicles had to slow down.
"Ye Han! Liu Xin! The target has passed through the congested area and is expected to reach the tunnel exit in seven minutes. Please get ready," Zhan Min said, sweating profusely. He certainly didn't possess such incredible driving skills.
Moreover, that GL8 had completed this series of maneuvers at over sixty miles per hour, which was nothing short of astonishing. Its leisurely one-sided driving performance couldn't even be compared to his own.
"Where are you? Did you lose them?" Peng Hao asked irritably.
"It's fine; after all, we're inside the tunnel, Zhan Min! You just need to move forward slowly and ensure they don't turn back and escape," Chen Rui's voice came through the intercom, though there was a loud rumble and rush of air in the background.
"Boss? Where are you? Are you in the helicopter? Hurry and come pick us up," Peng Hao pleaded as if he had seen a savior. "It's really a mess here; I don't know what's going on today. It shouldn't be like this."
Chen Rui's voice was low. "I'll be there soon."
One minute earlier:
"Please, big brother! We're really on a mission," Chen Rui pleaded with the truck driver, but it didn't have much effect.
"Forget it; don't talk to me about that. There's a police station right here; we'll go there first." The driver completely ignored Chen Rui's reasoning and forcibly took him to the police station.
"I need to borrow your police car!" Chen Rui's first words left the Police Chief speechless.
"Well, I need to apply to my superiors for that."
Chen Rui didn't have the luxury of waiting for the First Floor's notification. He quickly sent a short message to the designated superior's phone number.
Before long, the chief brought two individuals in front of Chen Rui, who would take them where they needed to go.
Chen Rui initially thought, "I can drive," but he was pleasantly surprised to see that both individuals were dressed like pilots. Given the current poor road conditions everywhere, it was clear that air units would be much more efficient than ground units.
"Excuse me, do you know why the city's traffic is so bad right now?" Chen Rui attempted to ask.
"I'm not really sure. Traffic isn't under my jurisdiction, but it seems like the Traffic Management System has been hacked."
Chen Rui turned to the driver. "You just wait here. I'll return after I finish my business and fulfill my promise."
The driver looked somewhat flattered; he had witnessed Chen Rui's capabilities firsthand. It seemed that Chen Rui was indeed on an important mission. If he were charged with obstructing official duties, it would be a serious issue for him.
Even though this was an era of high civil rights, it was precisely because of this that officials executing their duties were often granted extraordinary powers. Only in this way could they complete their tasks with maximum speed and efficiency. Otherwise, anyone could delay them, making it impossible to accomplish their missions.
"Um! Alright!" The driver awkwardly agreed, unsure of what else to say.
Chen Rui and Li Xue followed the two pilots to the platform where a Police Helicopter had been waiting for some time.
"Over there, yes, right there, descend and stop at that height," Chen Rui ordered the pilot.
"Understood, but at our current altitude, we can't stay too long, or the public will have complaints," the pilot replied as he lowered the helicopter to fifteen meters above Peng Hao. This was already the maximum limit for the rope ladder, yet even from the ground, one could feel the tremendous wind force.
"What are you doing? Hurry up and climb up!" Chen Rui shouted into the intercom.
There was no response from Peng Hao's side, but soon enough, he and five others were seen climbing the rope ladder.
"Let's go!" Chen Rui commanded the pilot.
"That would be very dangerous," the pilot hesitated about whether to take off directly.
Chen Rui yelled at the pilot in a fierce tone, "Just follow orders."
The pilot immediately ascended and continued flying toward the tunnel exit.
Once Peng Hao and the other six climbed aboard, they all cursed Chen Rui in unison. Climbing up a rope ladder during flight was no simple task; a slip of the hand or foot could lead to a fall.
"What were you doing down there? Taking your sweet time?" Chen Rui asked angrily.
"We were discussing who would stay behind," Peng Hao replied with a smile.
Chen Rui sighed helplessly, wondering what these people were thinking. Anyway, the net was basically set; he didn't believe they could escape!
