The arrival of the United Airlines flight undoubtedly served as a shot of adrenaline for the people in the Waiting Hall.
Although it was clear that this flight was just a medium-sized regional aircraft, capable of carrying around two hundred passengers, it still offered a glimmer of hope to everyone at the airport. This was also why Chen Rui hesitated for so long before allowing it to land.
"United Airlines Flight 18, please taxi to any gate at Terminal 1. Due to the lack of a guidance vehicle, please proceed with caution."
"Understood." The Captain's deep voice had a slightly hoarse quality, but it exuded reliability.
"Why are they being directed to Terminal 1? Given the current situation, wouldn't it be better to go abroad?" Chen Rui asked. With the flu rampant across the United States and disasters unfolding everywhere, he couldn't understand why they were still allowing the aircraft to land at Terminal 1.
"Is the situation abroad any better?" the person in charge replied softly. "Compared to our country's disaster in North America, Canada is facing even worse conditions. Almost all major cities there have reported infections. Besides, this plane can only fly a little over five thousand kilometers without refueling. Where could it reach?"
Chen Rui found himself at a loss for words after hearing this. He couldn't come up with a counterargument.
"And," the person in charge continued, "they were originally on a domestic route and have no clearance to land in other countries. Even if they flew to a country that hasn't reported any infected persons, that country would likely close its airports due to flu concerns and refuse landing."
Hearing this made Chen Rui break out in a cold sweat. "What about flights that have already left the country?"
The person in charge remained silent, and his silence spoke volumes. Flights heading to uninfected countries would generally not receive landing permissions; if they lacked enough fuel for a return trip, they would ultimately have to make an emergency landing and be quarantined by the local government.
On the other hand, flights returning domestically would typically be allowed to land. At this critical moment, regardless of where they were coming from, these planes could drop off passengers while also transferring others to areas that had not yet reported infections. Thus, for them now, flying to uninfected regions domestically was the safest choice.
"Report! Flight 18 has entered Gate 15. Should we use the jet bridge?" a staff member awaited orders from the person in charge.
The person in charge turned to look at Chen Rui, who silently nodded. The person then spoke into the microphone, "Allow the use of the jet bridge and open the cabin doors."
"Wait a moment," Chen Rui suddenly called to a halt. "You all go ahead and maintain order at the scene."
Li Li nodded and led them out of the control room.
"Is it really necessary? It might backfire," the person in charge hesitated to ask.
Chen Rui pondered for a moment before responding directly, "I believe that even if it does backfire, my team has a certain deterrent effect, which will prevent them from acting recklessly. In this situation, everyone wants to board the plane, and your limited security personnel simply can't handle it."
"It's still your fault. If it weren't for your obvious attire, their mood would definitely be much better than it is now. Your arrival is nothing short of an alarm for them! And now you come to blame us for inadequate security work! You..." The girl chattered on, her tone filled with accusation.
"That's enough." The person in charge interrupted her, apologizing with a smile at Chen Rui. "Please don't take offense; the child doesn't understand."
"It's fine. It's my duty. Even knowing this is an infection zone, I won't leave without Superior Orders," Chen Rui replied lightly, unfazed by the girl's words.
"We're in position," Li Li's voice came through the intercom. "However, it seems that our presence has made the civilians even more agitated."
"Don't worry about that. As long as no one crosses the ticket gate, it's effective."
Chen Rui smiled. "You can open the door now; it should have been opened earlier. Let the passengers out first."
Hearing Chen Rui's words, the person in charge slightly furrowed his brow and spoke into the microphone, "Open the door!"
Chen Rui pointed toward Flight 18 and asked the person in charge, "Is this how your Captain disembarks? The Cabin Crew won't open the Cabin door without your command?"
The person in charge looked where Chen Rui was pointing and saw that the emergency exit under Flight 18 had been opened, and both Co-Pilots were climbing down the ladder.
"No... Normally, we should wait for the passengers to disembark before coming out of the jet bridge. Generally, once the jet bridge is connected, we notify the Cabin Crew to open the Cabin door, or we do it ourselves." The person in charge frowned, clearly confused about what these two Captains were doing.
Chen Rui suddenly furrowed his brow and rushed in front of the person in charge, shouting into the microphone, "Do not open the door! Repeat, do not open the door!"
"Ah..." On the other side, only vague shouts and some biting and crashing sounds could be heard.
Cold sweat immediately broke out on Chen Rui's forehead as he opened the intercom. "Attention! Do not let anyone out of the jet bridge."
"Huh?" Li Li turned to look at the jet bridge at that moment, seeing several bloodied 'passengers' rushing towards him.
"They're here so soon." Li Li quickly disengaged the safety on his gun and placed his finger on the trigger.
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!" A few short bursts fired, and several 'passengers' collapsed to the ground. However, even so, those 'passengers' still attempted to crawl towards everyone with their last bit of strength.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhh!" The crowd erupted in chaos; those who had been congested at the boarding gate immediately scattered, leaving only Li Li and a few security personnel and ticket agents behind.
"You all need to leave!" Zhou Zhi pushed aside a security officer and shouted, "Can't you see what's happening? Hurry up! Get some food and go home! Lock your doors and windows!"
"They're coming..." Wang Xinzhuo swallowed hard, resting his rifle against his right shoulder, aiming at the corner of the jet bridge.
A dense swarm of 'passengers' surged out of the jet bridge, their numbers overwhelming.
"Open fire," Li Li shouted loudly.
In truth, this command was unnecessary; the visual shock caused everyone to instinctively pull their triggers. However, due to psychological shock, their fire was somewhat scattered. Most bullets hit various parts of the 'passengers' bodies, reducing their mobility but failing to achieve any substantial progress.
The density of the 'Passengers' was too high. Even at such close range, the rifle bullets could only penetrate the first two or three rows, leaving those behind unharmed.
"Fall back!" Li Li raised his left hand, and everyone began to retreat in an orderly manner. However, as they withdrew, the 'Passengers' surged out of the corridor and started rushing in all directions.
"The situation is beyond expectations; interception failed, interception failed!" Li Li hurriedly reported to Chen Rui.
Chen Rui slammed his hand on the control panel, frustrated. "Get back to the parking area as quickly as possible. If we don't reach there before the Infected Person does, you all need to head to the high intersection and meet up with Peng Hao and the others!"
"Understood!" Li Li replied, accompanied by the sound of intense gunfire. It seemed that the 'Passenger army' had completely broken through their blockade.
"You all need to evacuate the airport immediately!" Chen Rui shouted at the person in charge.
"No! I have to get those planes off the ground first!" The person in charge stubbornly insisted, glancing at the bewildered staff and smiling.
"You don't need to worry about me; I can handle this alone. You all need to leave!"
Chen Rui turned to Liu Xin. "You and Zhan Min escort them out of the airport, then head straight to the parking area to regroup with Li Li!"
"What about you?" Zhan Min asked worriedly. "Are you really going out there alone?"
"Understood," Liu Xin said, quickly accepting the orders unlike Zhan Min. She immediately gathered her team and left the control room, clearing a path for the staff.
"Don't worry about me; just go! I'm not at a point where you need to be concerned," Chen Rui said with a smile, his expression radiating reliability.
Zhan Min nodded without saying another word, leading her team to follow the staff and provide cover for them.
"You don't have to stay here with me; the responsibilities you have are far more important than mine." The person in charge lit a cigarette, glanced at Chen Rui, and asked with a smile, "Care for one?"
"Sure." Chen Rui took the cigarette, lit it, and immediately took a deep drag, trying to ease the anger and tension within him.
Chen Rui switched on the walkie-talkie and changed the channel. "Lujie? Lujie?"
"I'm here! There's something unusual happening with the crowd at the airport; it seems like they're frantically leaving," Lujie said, his brow furrowed as he stared at the computer screen.
"Yes, the airport has been breached by Infected Persons. A plane has been infected, but the Captain is hiding the truth," Chen Rui's voice was agitated, clearly furious about the actions of those two Captains.
"Forget about that for now. Immediately redirect all city police forces toward the airport. Set up checkpoints at every intersection and order them to fire freely upon sighting any Infected Persons. Also, you need to leave there as soon as possible and head to the high road."
"Understood. We'll start evacuating right away."
Chen Rui switched channels again. "Peng Hao, have you contacted the Vice President's convoy?"
Peng Hao replied with a smile, "I've made contact; they should arrive at the high exit in about half an hour."
"Tell them to speed up; they must leave Las Vegas while the high road is still clear! Starting now, restrict incoming traffic to the high road!"
Chen Rui spoke quickly, the immense pressure of his words transferring to Peng Hao.
"Is there trouble at the airport?" Peng Hao asked cautiously.
Chen Rui paused for a moment and lowered his voice as well because he could hear the noise around Peng Hao, indicating he was near a crowd.
"Yes, the situation is not good. In any case, we definitely can't make it to the airport. I'm trying to control the spread of the infection, but I estimate it won't hold for long. Do your best over there and don't expose any flaws."
"Understood. How will you get over here?"
"I don't know. If we can't get on Flight 15, I'll take another flight. You must follow the Vice President's convoy; we'll try to meet up in the air." Chen Rui glanced at the person in charge. "Alright, that's enough for now. Just adapt as needed."
"Got it."
Chen Rui approached the person in charge and asked, "How many flights are left?"
"There are three more, but one is a private business jet parked in the hangar. The other two are about to enter the runway." The person in charge was sweating profusely, clearly drained from the efficient management earlier.
"Alright, let's go."
"Let's wait until they take off," the person in charge insisted, determined to hold out until the end.
Chen Rui watched as two planes prepared for takeoff on different runways when suddenly someone ran towards one of the planes from the ground, followed by several others—dozens of disheveled people rushing toward the aircraft.
"Damn it," Chen Rui cursed into the microphone. "Attention! Attention! Allow takeoff! Allow takeoff! Increase speed immediately! Increase speed now!"
