As the two planes disappeared into the distance, the entire airport plunged into chaos. Infected individuals rampaged through the crowd, which surged out of the terminal like a wild tide. Anyone knocked to the ground faced a grim fate.
"Let's go," Chen Rui said as he opened the control room door and looked at the person in charge.
The official wasted no time, quickly gathering his belongings and rushing out.
The two of them hurried down the stairs, the sound of their shoes striking the floor echoing sharply in the stairwell.
"What did you grab?"
"Nothing much, just my phone, wallet, and airport access card."
"I don't even know your name," Chen Rui said with a wry smile. This person was quite clever; if circumstances allowed, Chen Rui would have considered bringing him into his team.
"Ron," he replied with a smile. "I'm sorry, but I have to decline any offers, including working for the government or the country. I have someone waiting for me at home."
Chen Rui couldn't help but sigh in disappointment, but his gaze toward Ron held a newfound respect.
Reaching the exit, Chen Rui pressed against the door and asked, "Can you use a gun?"
Ron hesitated before nodding. Chen Rui immediately handed him his handgun. "I'll lead; you just cover my back."
"Is it really that serious? Could it be..." Ron hesitated for a moment but ultimately accepted the gun from Chen Rui, chambering a round and disengaging the safety while nodding in acknowledgment.
Chen Rui pulled open the door, resting the rifle's stock against his right shoulder as he stepped out cautiously.
Seeing the chaotic crowd outside, Chen Rui lowered his weapon and called to Ron, "Follow me!"
Ron also disengaged the safety on his handgun and quickly fell in step behind Chen Rui.
"Things aren't too bad right now; at least most of the people running are still rational," Chen Rui said as he ran, observing the situation around him.
"What would be a truly terrible situation?" Ron asked. To him, this was already quite dire, but Chen Rui's words suggested that what they were experiencing was merely an appetizer to the real crisis.
"About one hundred fifty meters at three o'clock," Chen Rui stated, pinpointing the location precisely.
Ron looked to the right and saw a person crouched over another, biting into them. Blood covered both bodies, and the ground around them was soaked in crimson.
"It won't be long before it turns into that. After a while, everyone who gets bitten will become like them—mindless, soulless corpses!!!"
Chen Rui's words struck Ron like a thunderbolt. Although he had vaguely understood the situation through various channels before, he still tried to find some comforting rationale. Now, however, the last flicker of hope in his heart had vanished completely.
Following the crowd was mostly the right choice since those ahead did not turn back. Chen Rui and Ron quickly made their way out of the airport.
Outside the airport was also chaotic. It was hard to tell whether to feel relieved or frustrated because there were no Infected Persons outside. As a result, most people chose to get into their cars, causing traffic near the airport to come to a standstill.
"Quick, go this way," Chen Rui said as he spotted a parking area and took off running.
"Why not take my car? It's right there."
Ron panted as he followed. After their frantic dash through the airport, his cardiovascular system was clearly struggling to keep up.
"Can you guarantee you'll be able to drive it out?" Chen Rui countered. "Right now, time is life. No one knows when the Infected Persons will burst out of the airport. They’re still tending to those inside, but once most of them are out, those Infected Persons will definitely follow. If you drive then, you'll be stuck here!"
"What should we do? We can't just keep running forever!"
"My team's vehicle is parked on the lawn in front of the park. We'll meet up with them there, and then," Chen Rui paused and smiled, "you can just go home."
Ron nodded with a smile and looked at Chen Rui, saying, "I wish you all the best in completing your mission."
The two quickened their pace, sprinting across the parking lot towards the designated vehicles.
Upon seeing the convoy, Chen Rui shouted through the intercom, "Is everyone here?"
"You're the last one. We lent two vehicles to the airport staff, so we have to squeeze in," Liu Xin replied with a hint of frustration. "We only have three vehicles left now, but it's fine; we can fit. It's just that we're down two 14 Machine Guns, which significantly reduces our firepower."
Hearing Liu Xin's words, Chen Rui frowned. "Can't we unload them? They won't need those things."
Liu Xin shook his head at Chen Rui, looking serious.
Chen Rui moved closer to Liu Xin as he whispered, "We can unload them, but we don't have the time. Plus, these two are mounted guns, not handheld ones. So even if we take them off temporarily, they won't be useful. The key issue is," Liu Xin glanced at the group of airport workers, "they have a strong resistance to this idea. When it was first proposed, there was fierce opposition. I think it's best not to unload them to avoid any accidents."
Chen Rui nodded. "We'll go with your decision." He turned to Ron and said with a smile, "You all should hurry up and go. It’s best to stop by a large market and grab some food. Even if you can't leave the city, it will last for a while—hopefully until the rescue team arrives."
Ron smiled and patted Chen Rui on the shoulder, silently shaking his head before turning and getting into an SUV that sped away.
Due to the commotion at the airport, most vehicles on this road began heading back. Although they weren't moving quickly, it was still better than when everyone had surged toward the airport.
Chen Rui got into the SUV driven by Li Xue and watched the slow-moving traffic. He pointed towards the lawn and said, "Let's go this way; they're too slow."
Without hesitation, Li Xue shifted gears and pressed the accelerator to the floor. The V8 engine roared as it propelled the two-ton SUV forward.
Chen Rui picked up the vehicle's radio and asked, "Lujie, where are you now?"
"We're out already; the traffic here is terrible too. I'm currently on the sidewalk," Lujie's voice came through along with crashing sounds. The continuous thuds indicated that Lujie's SUV was recklessly demolishing road facilities as it moved forward.
"You're destroying state assets like this, aren't you afraid the police will come looking for you?" Chen Rui laughed.
"I've already sent the police out; they're all heading to the airport..." Lujie suddenly stopped. He had ordered all police forces in the city to head towards the airport. This would indeed buy some time, but those officers following his orders would likely lose their lives.
"Don't blame yourself," Chen Rui said calmly. "Get to Peng Hao's location as quickly as possible, at any cost!"
"Understood!"
"Peng Hao! How's it going over there?" Chen Rui hurriedly inquired about the situation at High Entrance. If something unexpected happened and the entrance got blocked, it would be a disaster.
"I'm here! The situation isn't good." Peng Hao's voice was anxious and agitated, and the chaotic background noise from before had vanished.
"What exactly is happening?"
"There’s more than one High Entrance. The southern direction of No. 15 is completely blocked now. The northern direction's first entrance, which is under my control, is still clear for now, but I have no idea about the situation further north; it’s very likely that it's blocked as well." Peng Hao was sweating profusely; several traffic accidents had already occurred on the other side of the road. The heavy traffic flow had caused a jam, and vehicles were moving at a pace barely faster than walking.
"What’s going on? Where is the Vice President's convoy? Can they take a detour?" Chen Rui asked several questions in quick succession; Peng Hao's words left him feeling uneasy.
"The Vice President's convoy has been notified; they are about to enter Las Vegas. It’s difficult for them to turn back now, so they can only go this way. The main reason for the traffic congestion is that large numbers of vehicles are pouring into every entrance, forcing vehicles on the elevated roads to descend. A few such entrances have caused the jam, but because of our situation, I believe conditions heading north should be much better than those heading south."
"Alright then, we'll discuss it further when we meet." Chen Rui closed the radio and looked at Li Xue, who was focused on driving. He smiled and asked, "So, are you having fun this time?"
"Not really," Li Xue replied with a smile.
Chen Rui swallowed hard; Li Xue never followed the usual script. "What would make it fun then?"
"You getting frantic makes me happy," Li Xue said, looking at Chen Rui with a cheerful smile.
"Watch the road! Watch the road! Watch the road!" Chen Rui snapped back to reality, startled by Li Xue's sudden movement.
"What do we do? There's a barrier ahead," Li Xue asked with a smile, though she already had an answer in mind.
Chen Rui didn't respond directly. Instead, he said seriously, "If you saw a reindeer blocking the army's path in the middle of a battlefield, what would you do?"
"Run it over!"
"Bang..." The massive Chevrolet SUV easily smashed through the wooden barrier, and the convoy moved from the lawn onto the sidewalk. In their panic to leave the city quickly, there were no pedestrians on the sidewalk, which actually worked in Chen Rui's favor.
Three cars sped down the sidewalk, and the vehicles behind began to imitate Chen Rui. However, as more people had this idea, the sidewalk soon became congested.
"The traffic is blocked; what do we do?" Li Xue was genuinely starting to feel anxious now. She had always been a law-abiding citizen and had never crashed into someone else's car before.
"Just crash through!" Chen Rui's strong voice became Li Xue's motivation. The Chevrolet carved a path through the gaps between vehicles amidst a chorus of curses and complaints, finally getting past the first intersection.
"It's really tough without police assistance," Chen Rui remarked.
At that moment, the car radio suddenly crackled to life with Peng Hao's voice coming through. "Lujie has arrived. The Vice President's convoy will be here in about ten minutes. They need to refuel, and using our equipment for on-site refueling will take about two or three minutes. You must get here within twelve minutes! Otherwise, we'll have to leave."
"Got it!" Chen Rui glanced at the endless sea of cars ahead and felt his confidence waver again.
