"Fall back! Fall back!" Chen Rui turned and gestured to the others, shouting loudly.
The Captain immediately shielded the Vice President and began to retreat, while the remaining members drew their sidearms, aiming at the approaching crowd.
Chen Rui hurriedly pressed down on one person's gun barrel, pointing towards the nearby Excalibur Hotel. He shouted to the Captain, "Head there! This area will soon descend into chaos. Let your people go first; we'll hold this position!"
The Captain hesitated for a moment but ultimately ordered his team to withdraw. As he left, he cast a lingering glance at Chen Rui, his eyes filled with sorrow, as if bidding farewell to a long-lost friend.
Watching the guards escorting the Vice President toward the Stone Sword Hotel, Chen Rui immediately commanded, "Defensive formation, begin the retreat!"
Peng Hao and Ye Han's teams formed the first line of defense; Liu Xin and Zhan Min's teams made up the second line. The remaining members positioned themselves as reserves and began to retreat towards the roadside.
The Stone Sword Hotel was one of the most prominent buildings in the area, second only to New York New York Hotel. Its medieval-style decor extended beyond its exterior; even the furnishings in the guest rooms and the attire of the dealers and staff in the casino reflected a fairy tale world.
Even from high above, this location was easily identifiable, and this cluster of buildings was quite famous in Las Vegas.
Chen Rui chose that destination for these reasons: a more recognizable landmark would allow rescue teams to locate them quickly, thereby reducing the danger faced by the Vice President.
The crowd soon surged past Chen Rui's team. He did not issue a command to fire, so no one shot their weapons; instead, they continued to retreat in an orderly fashion.
"Prepare!" Chen Rui raised his left hand. The Infected were drawing closer in increasing numbers, yet many civilians still desperately ran for their lives.
"Fire!" At Chen Rui's command, over twenty tongues of flame erupted with flashes. From a distance, it was clear to see bullets raining down on a group of disheveled 'people.'
However, those 'people' did not fall dead immediately; most continued to advance unless they were shot in a way that incapacitated them or blew their heads apart.
Everyone was using automatic fire; at this distance, precise aiming was unnecessary. The hail of bullets created a metal storm that tore through those 'people,' transforming their surroundings into hell itself. The sight of bodies strewn everywhere caused some with weaker nerves to tremble.
Of course, having abandoned the mounted 14 Machine Gun made it nearly impossible for them to maintain sustained firepower. After the first wave of shots, there was no sign of life within a hundred meters. However, the loud gunfire turned them into lightning rods amidst a stormy night, drawing more Infected toward their position.
"Quick! First team fall back on tracks; second team clear a path to the hotel!" Chen Rui had no intention of lingering in this place; stalling would only lead to their doom. The continuous gunfire would attract even more Infected until they eventually ran out of ammunition!
"Come now! Lingering will only lead to your own demise!"
The Stone Sword Hotel also faced Highway 59, but it was the closest cluster of high-rise buildings to them.
Chen Rui and his group dashed into Ren Street, a road parallel to Highway 59, separated by the Excalibur Hotel. At that moment, the street was filled with panicked crowds running in all directions, unlike the situation on the highway where a horde of Infected Persons lurked.
"Quick! Get into the hotel," Chen Rui urged, noticing that the swarm of Infected Persons above was closing in fast.
They entered through the South Gate at the back of the Stone Sword Hotel. Inside, chaos reigned as people rushed about, but there were no Infected Persons in sight.
This puzzled Chen Rui. The hotel's main entrance, the North Gate, directly faced Highway 59, which should have been a heavily infected area. Yet, upon entering the hotel, they had not encountered a single Infected Person.
"Captain! Captain! Where are you?" Chen Rui called into the intercom.
"We're in Building Two, heading to the rooftop. Are you all okay?" Captain replied, panting heavily, clearly exhausted from recent exertion.
"We're fine, but if we don't hurry up, I think we won't be for long," Chen Rui said with an awkward smile. He turned to Peng Hao and asked, "Do you know where Building Two is?"
Peng Hao shook his head, but Liu Xin quickly pointed out the direction. Chen Rui shot him a glance before continuing with Captain. "The Infected Persons behind us will reach here; it's just a matter of time. It seems there are no Infected Persons here right now. What happened on your end?"
Captain paused for a moment before responding. "There are Infected Persons, but not many. The main entrance's suspension bridge has been raised, so the quickest way into the hotel has been blocked off. However, there are still many side doors and employee passages. We encountered an attack in one of those passages... two people..."
Captain's voice grew heavy with sorrow. From his words, Chen Rui understood that two individuals likely stayed behind to cover their escape; everyone knew what that meant.
"Alright, see you on the rooftop!" Chen Rui quietly ended the radio call and followed Liu Xin toward Building Two.
Inside the hotel, chaos reigned as people rushed around. Most seemed to be running aimlessly at first glance, but each had their own purpose: exiting the hotel, returning to their rooms, looking for security personnel, and so on. However, most were making their way toward the hotel exit; many believed they should flee while they could since Highway 15 was less than three hundred meters west of the hotel...
Watching so many people rush toward death's embrace made Chen Rui frown slightly, but he didn't feel it was his place to stop them.
It wasn't that he was selfish; it was simply because he knew that no matter what he did, it was impossible to change their opinions now. Only when the scythe of death was at their throats would they realize and regret their choices.
As they entered the guest room area, there were no guards at the door asking for room cards to grant access. Perhaps at this point, the guards had no obligation to continue holding their posts.
Arriving at the elevator, Chen Rui finally understood why the Captain had been so out of breath earlier. All the elevators were constantly going up and down, stopping, and repeating these actions endlessly.
"Let's take the stairs," Chen Rui sighed helplessly and took the lead up the stairs.
Due to the main entrance's suspension bridge, most of the Infected Persons had not entered the hotel. Only a few had come through side doors, staff passages, or other entrances. Therefore, there was no need to worry about Infected Persons in the guest room area; they were mostly hunting in the casino and merchant areas.
Of course, this did not change the fate of this place. It was only a matter of time before all the hotel guests were infected. After all, Infected Persons were pouring in from all directions, especially from the group that Chen Rui's team had attracted from above.
If nothing unexpected happened, this group of Infected Persons would first collide with guests trying to leave for the parking lot. Then, when the remaining guests saw something was wrong, they would surely run back inside, leading the Infected Persons into the hotel...
The main building of Stone Sword Hotel consisted of two L-shaped towers with twenty-eight floors each. Running from the First Floor to the rooftop in one go was no easy feat; even someone as strong as the Captain found it a bit exhausting.
"Can we stop running? Nothing is going to happen for a while," Liu Xin complained while holding her waist.
"Exactly... all this effort and no extra pay," Zhan Min chimed in beside her.
After some 'persuasion' led by these two, the entire team's pace finally slowed from running to a leisurely walk. At the same time, their noise level decreased significantly.
"Thud..." Zhan Min heavily stepped on a stair, causing everyone to turn and look at him. Zhan Min forced a smile and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Be lighter..." Peng Hao patted Zhan Min on the back. "You walk like you're about to die."
"There was so much noise just now and nothing happened; now you come over with this little sound..." Zhan Min shot a glare at Peng Hao but received another pat in return.
"It suddenly got quiet; it feels a bit eerie," Li Xue remarked as she looked up at the remaining stairs with a smile.
Zhou Zhi smiled as he wrapped his arms around Zhou Yan. "It's just a psychological effect."
"Get off me," Zhou Yan pushed Zhou Zhi away, her face filled with disdain. "I'm not that weak."
Her words struck a nerve with Zhan Min. Although she hadn't meant to, Zhan Min couldn't help but feel a sense of ease as she headed upstairs, almost as if she were taking a leisurely stroll rather than climbing stairs.
While feeling a mix of resentment and relief, Chen Rui and the others finally reached the top floor. The staircase did not lead directly to the rooftop; they had to pass through a special passageway because the rooftop was not open to the public, and the door was locked.
Looking at the electronic lock that had been shot through, Chen Rui couldn't help but chuckle. The group's approach was indeed simple and brutal; how would they lock it again later?
After climbing the last flight of stairs, they arrived at the rooftop. It only had a few ventilation ducts and air conditioning exhausts, and the layout was quite rudimentary since it wasn't designed as an observation deck.
Seeing Chen Rui and the others approach, the Captain finally breathed a sigh of relief. Their group only had defensive handguns, and in terms of both numbers and firepower, they couldn't compare to this ragtag team. With their arrival, the Vice President's safety had increased significantly.
"Have you contacted the higher-ups?" Chen Rui asked, signaling Peng Hao to arrange their people into a defensive formation. After all, the only 'defensive structure' downstairs had been permanently compromised by this group.
"There's no need to be so tense. Under normal circumstances, 'they' wouldn't be smart enough to come looking for us on the first floor. As long as we don't attract their attention here, we'll be fine," the Captain said, watching Chen Rui's team meticulously set up their defense. He smiled lightly. "We've already contacted our superiors. The good news is that a helicopter is on its way here. The bad news is that it will take four more hours to arrive."
"That's not really bad news," Chen Rui replied with a calm smile.
The Captain looked at Chen Rui and couldn't help but let out a wry smile.
