"What are you standing there for?" Chen Rui shouted anxiously. "Quick, form a perimeter!"
The chaotic sound of footsteps mixed with the crashing noise was enough to prove the number of Infected Persons rushing in.
Li Xue was the first to dash to the front of the first line, swiftly raising her rifle, disengaging the safety, her face nearly pressed against the stock.
The others quickly reacted as well, forming a defensive formation. The entire staircase exit was surrounded by three arcs of defense, with dozens of rifles aimed at the already blasted-open staircase.
As the crashing sounds grew closer and the footsteps became increasingly chaotic, a sense of unease settled in everyone's hearts.
The moment the first shadow leaped onto the stage, the air erupted with thunderous gunfire. Everyone squeezed their triggers in an extremely short span of time, the sound of simultaneous fire rivaling that of the previous high-explosive grenade.
Chen Rui continued to fire short bursts. He had no objections to the unified firing from earlier; if they didn't suppress the horde of Infected Persons at this critical moment, the subsequent waves would break through their defenses.
The damage caused by the metal storm was immense. The tremendous kinetic energy forcefully resisted the charge of the Infected Persons. However, due to the rifles' penetrating power, the heavy barrage only inflicted fatal damage on the first ten or so Infected Persons. Moreover, since these Infected Persons acted as meat shields for the Allied Forces behind them, it was difficult for everyone to inflict harm on those further back.
"Rifle Grenade!"
Chen Rui called out to Peng Hao, who immediately raised his rifle, aiming just above the heads of the Infected Persons while his left hand slid down to grip the trigger of the grenade launcher.
"Fire!"
As soon as Chen Rui's voice fell, two black cylindrical objects trailed by white smoke arced through the air and landed in the stairwell.
"Get down!"
Chen Rui shouted. There was no need to worry about being caught in an explosion; the horde of Infected Persons would completely absorb the blast from these two rifle grenades. Seeing Chen Rui and Peng Hao cease fire made them aware of what was about to happen, and they had already taken cover behind obstacles.
A tremendous explosion echoed, accompanied by a violent tremor, as the remnants of the Infected Person were sent flying in all directions.
As the dust settled from the blast, everyone’s first instinct was to immediately fortify their defenses, fearing that the subsequent Infected Person would take advantage of the chaos to breach their lines.
Fortunately, two grenades detonated at the center of the Infected Person horde, taking out a significant number of them. The shockwave from the explosion also pushed back those who were following closely behind, so there was no immediate surge of Infected Person rushing forward.
The effectiveness of these two grenades provided a momentary respite. The group managed to catch their breath and reload their magazines, as most had emptied one during the frantic gunfire just moments before.
However, the aftermath of the grenades brought more than just relief; it also drew forth a chorus of enraged roars from the remaining Infected Person, capturing the attention of those nearby.
“This is it; we’re completely out of options. Do you really have enough ammunition for this?” The Captain bluntly pointed out the dire situation of Chen Rui’s team. While their firepower could fend off the Infected Person’s assault for now, it was clear that their ammunition reserves wouldn’t last long under such intense combat. With continuous explosions, more and more Infected Person would be drawn to their location, pushing them into a fully defensive stance.
“We had no choice! If we hadn’t done that, they would have charged us!” Chen Rui shrugged helplessly. “How much longer can we hold out?”
“It’s only been a little over ten minutes!!!” The Captain said, sweating with urgency. They couldn’t stay on this rooftop much longer; they needed to move to a safer location quickly!
The horde of Infected Person surged forward again, charging recklessly toward them. The group had no choice but to pull their triggers once more, sending bronze-colored bullets with deadly intent flying toward the approaching Infected Person.
Chen Rui rushed over to the Captain's side. “We need to evacuate immediately!”
“Easier said than done!” The Captain shot Chen Rui an exasperated look. “We’re on a rooftop! We can’t just burrow underground!”
The Captain’s words sparked an idea in Chen Rui. His eyes lit up as he exclaimed, “Yes! Burrowing underground! Do you have any engineering ropes?”
“Who carries that kind of stuff in a situation like this?” The Captain replied irritably before suddenly realizing what Chen Rui meant. “You mean… we go down?”
"Yes! But we need to find something sturdier, for the safety of the Vice President. It's best if three of you go down first, not too far, just to the top floor."
The Captain couldn't help but admire Chen Rui's boldness. Letting the Vice President rappel down was a heavy responsibility they couldn't afford if anything went wrong!
"It's fine! Just do as he says!" said a somewhat thin man sitting nearby, his tone calm and friendly. However, his right hand, which was slightly trembling while holding a cigarette, betrayed his nervousness.
"Understood! Your Excellency, Vice President." Chen Rui saluted respectfully. At that moment, another explosion and shockwave echoed from the stairwell.
"It seems we need to hurry," Chen Rui said with a slight frown. "Do you have anything here that can replace a rope?"
The Captain smiled lightly. "We have nothing here, but we don't need anything."
At the Captain's command, fourteen members of the guard removed their suit jackets, tied two sleeves together, and quickly fashioned a sturdy rope using a sailor's knot.
"Is it strong enough?" Chen Rui couldn't help but worry. Although he trusted the Presidential Guard's skills, the material of their clothing was a significant concern.
"Don't worry; our uniforms are specially customized and very durable. The sailor's knot completely eliminates the risk of coming undone."
Chen Rui nodded. "We'll take care of this here; you escort the President down first! We can hold on for a bit longer."
With that, Chen Rui turned around nonchalantly and waved his hand as he hurried toward the stairwell.
"How's it going?" Chen Rui shouted as he reached Peng Hao's side. The sound of gunfire and smoke made it hard to hear.
"The situation is okay, but the ammunition situation is not optimistic. Conservatively estimating, we've already used up twenty percent of our ammunition reserves in just a short while!" Peng Hao reported honestly, knowing what Chen Rui was asking. "If this continues, we can hold out for at most twenty more minutes—half an hour at most! After half an hour, we'll definitely run out of ammunition and be powerless!"
"Alright! They have already started moving the Vice President to the guest room downstairs. We just need to hold on until then," Chen Rui nodded, raising his gun to aim at the staircase.
Peng Hao pressed down on Chen Rui's gun barrel and shook his head. "Don't cover us all the way. You take them to retreat while we hold the rear!"
With that, Peng Hao nodded towards Li Xue and the others.
Chen Rui understood Peng Hao's intention and sighed, "As you wish."
"Get going! She probably misses you, just like I miss Ye Han! Damn it! I'm going to charge up there and see my Ye Han as fast as I can!" Peng Hao said with a smile.
Chen Rui chuckled and patted Peng Hao on the shoulder before quickly running over to Li Xue. Seeing Chen Rui suddenly approach, Li Xue instinctively froze for a moment before immediately adopting a serious expression. "This is exactly when we need firepower. What are you doing wandering around?"
"Isn't it because I missed you?" Chen Rui replied with a grin.
Li Xue clearly softened at this, her face relaxing significantly, but she still retorted, "What are we really doing?"
"We're starting the retreat!" Chen Rui said, looking directly at Li Xue.
"Got it." Li Xue immediately resumed firing, emptying her magazine before swiftly falling back from the frontline.
Chen Rui then moved to retreat alongside Li Li, Zhou Zhi, Zhou Yan, Wang Xinzhuo, and Qin Xin. Their reactions were all quite similar; they calmly finished off their magazines and quickly retreated from the line.
Chen Rui didn't follow them out immediately. Instead, after firing a grenade towards the staircase, he shouted loudly, "Everyone pay attention! All members of the second squad; Lujie Team will hold the position! The rest continue to retreat!!!"
No one voiced any objections or anger; it was as if everything was perfectly reasonable. Even Peng Hao joked, "Hurry up and get lost! Damn it, I was tired of seeing you ages ago!"
Liu Xin also laughed, "Exactly, hurry up and get lost! We’re not like you!"
Lujie chuckled as well, "The sooner you die, the sooner you can be reborn. In the next life, I’ll be your father, and you won’t be able to escape that."
Chen Rui smiled lightly and resolutely turned to leave. Just then, the frontline erupted with thunderous gunfire, mixed with the sounds of explosions, like a solemn and mournful funeral march burying the fate of those left behind.
Captain watched all of this unfold, his brow furrowing slightly.
The ropes made from suits were very sturdy; two guards slid down simultaneously without incident. After confirming that the guest room below was safe, the Vice President slid down as well. The guards at the window held onto the rope while the Vice President safely entered the guest room.
Now only the remaining guards and Chen Rui’s group of seven were left.
Captain approached Chen Rui and quietly asked, "How did you manage that?"
"What do you mean?" Chen Rui replied, confused.
Captain had no choice but to clarify, "I didn’t see anything particularly outstanding about you or any exceptional leadership skills. Yet they follow you so wholeheartedly, obeying your orders unconditionally, even knowing it could lead them to…"
"Because…" Chen Rui said with a faint smile, "They are my friends, my brothers, my family..."
In his heart, Chen Rui also bitterly smiled, "These guys can’t wait to get out of this damned place!"
