Although the Emergency Rope was relatively sturdy, no one dared to attempt a simultaneous descent with three people. After all, they were nearly a hundred meters above the ground, and a single mistake could lead to an irreparable accident.
This "rope" was forcibly woven together using Suit Jackets, making it impossible to descend as smoothly as one would with a normal rope. Moreover, they were not simply rappelling down to the ground, which added to the difficulty and slowed their progress significantly.
The slow pace was also due to the Vice President, an unknown man, and Chen Rui's team, while the Presidential Guard moved at an extremely fast rate.
In stark contrast were Chen Rui and his companions. Although they might have experienced games like Argae or even used firearms in reality, their proficiency with guns did not translate into this kind of "abnormal" extreme sport, which was likely not their strong suit.
"Hurry up!" Chen Rui smiled as he watched Li Xue and Li Li climbing down, then turned his gaze toward the stairwell.
The stairwell had now become a hellish scene, with hardly a clean spot in sight. The area around the stairwell was drenched in blood, including that of Peng Hao, Liu Xin, and others on the front line.
Everyone was bloodshot-eyed, mechanically repeating the series of actions: retrieving magazines, loading them, chambering rounds, and pulling triggers. When a magazine ran empty, they would repeat the process once more.
Of course, there were exceptions. Zhan Min, Lujie, and others under Peng Hao had already entered a frenzied state, clearly reveling in this bloody feast.
Chen Rui did not oppose their "entertainment." After all, everyone needed an outlet at times. For them, releasing emotions in this dreamlike state was also a viable choice.
However, Chen Rui soon noticed something unusual. It wasn't just them; everyone was frantically pulling triggers. The rate of ammunition depletion had far exceeded previous levels.
This made Chen Rui's heart race because such intense shooting would empty magazines in an instant. When most people had to reload simultaneously, defensive firepower would drastically decrease—he could only imagine the consequences!
Yet even so, the Infected were quickly breaching their defenses. Suddenly, Chen Rui realized what the problem was!
They weren't using grenades!
The horde of Infected surged forward relentlessly. The injured Infected were trampled by those behind them as they began to make contact with the defensive line.
Chen Rui watched as the defense started to shrink back into an arc shape. At that moment, many people's magazines ran dry; defensive firepower immediately dropped by more than half, allowing the Infected to fully breach the stage.
Just as the group was surrounded by the Infected, a grenade exploded nearby, causing severe damage to the surrounding Infected.
Chen Rui smiled wryly. "Since we still have grenades, why not throw one earlier?"
With that, Chen Rui immediately grabbed the rope tied to the air conditioning vent bracket, ran to the edge of the platform, and skillfully leaped down facing the wall.
Chen Rui's angle was perfect, but Li Li and Li Xue were still at the windowsill and had not entered the room. Chen Rui's impact caused all three of them to tumble into the guest room together.
"What was that? That hurt," Li Xue complained, holding her head.
"Quick, close the window and throw the rope out!" Chen Rui didn't comfort Li Xue directly but reminded her while enduring the pain.
The Captain swiftly tossed the rope outside and shut the window of the guest room.
Within seconds, several shadows leaped down from the platform; they were the Infected chasing right behind!
Soon after, more and more Infected jumped down, creating a spectacular scene!
Everyone watched in shock at this sight, yet no one made a sound because they could hear everything happening outside the guest room clearly.
This wasn't due to poor soundproofing; on the contrary, these rooms were well-insulated. The reason everyone could hear the commotion outside so clearly was that the area outside was packed with Infected!!!
"How long until the helicopter arrives?" Chen Rui asked the Captain.
The Captain extended his left hand and glanced at his tactical watch, which was still counting down. He sighed. "About two hundred minutes."
Two hundred minutes meant nearly three and a half hours. During this time, if they made any noise that attracted the horde of Infected outside, it would be their end. The platform had already fallen, making it impossible to use old tactics again.
"Is that door sturdy?" Chen Rui asked anxiously.
"This type of door is generally very solid, but this hotel was built in 199, and the maintenance over the years directly affects the safety of this door. Only the hotel manager really knows the actual data," Captain replied, frowning. He understood what Chen Rui was worried about.
When the rescue team arrives, the loud roar of the airplane engines will surely attract the attention of the Infected. If that door is breached in an instant by the Infected, then the fate of the Vice President and everyone present will once again become uncertain.
Chen Rui forced a smile. "So we can only rely on luck?"
"Yeah, right now we can only rely on luck," Captain sighed in resignation.
"It's really frustrating. Generally, only the weak depend on luck," Chen Rui joked.
Captain looked into Chen Rui's eyes and asked calmly, "It's not that you're too weak; quite the opposite. It's because you're too strong that they will stop at nothing to take you down."
Chen Rui shook his head with a smile at Captain's words. "No, it's because the people we protect are too important."
"Don't flatter me," Vice President said with a bitter smile. "I'm just a burden to you all. The citizens have become like this, and here I am, just surviving."
"No!" Chen Rui and Captain denied this in unison.
"Your life is worth thousands; how can you think like this?" Captain stood up and questioned Vice President, pointing at Chen Rui and the others. "Do you think they fight without hesitation for no reason? Do you think we've survived all this because of nothing?"
Vice President looked at Captain, his eyes filled with unexpressed emotion.
Chen Rui quickly tugged at Captain. "Lower your voice."
Captain realized he was getting a bit too emotional and sat back down on the sand, looking at Vice President calmly. "Aren't we all fighting for you? So please don't say such things; otherwise, you would be disrespecting those up there. Because if you think like that, their sacrifices become meaningless. Do you understand?"
The Vice President looked at the Captain with a wry smile, remaining silent.
"Almost there," the Captain said, patting Chen Rui on the shoulder.
Chen Rui gently roused Li Xue. Although the battle had not lasted long, everyone had been on high alert for an extended period. As soon as they found themselves in a quiet environment, they couldn't help but relax and drift off to sleep.
Li Xue woke up groggily, and upon seeing Chen Rui's face, she immediately wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned against his chest, saying, "You finally came back."
Chen Rui shook Li Xue lightly, and the motion fully awakened her. However, she paid no mind to the awkwardness of the moment and quickly checked her weapons and gear, asking, "Is the rescue team coming?"
"Very close," the Captain replied, leaning in with a smile as he asked Chen Rui, "Your partner?"
"Not at all."
"Yes, she is."
Two completely different voices chimed in simultaneously. The Captain looked puzzled for a moment before breaking into a grin and patting Chen Rui on the shoulder, his eyes conveying a shared understanding.
Chen Rui sighed and chose not to explain further.
Before long, the rescue team appeared before them. There was only one aircraft, but upon closer inspection, it was clear that this was a classic historical plane—a four-rotor tiltrotor aircraft.
The V44 was a derivative of the previous generation V model. Before its service, it faced numerous criticisms due to its danger factor being more than double that of the V model. However, after entering service, the V44 broke various records for military aircraft and has yet to experience any incidents, boasting characteristics far superior to other helicopters.
The choice to use the V44 for rescue missions was largely due to its speed, long range, ability to hover in mid-air, and vertical takeoff and landing capabilities—hence why it was dispatched for this operation.
However, it also posed significant risks; one of the main threats was the immense noise generated by its rotors. As soon as Chen Rui and the others realized that the rescue team had arrived, the Infected outside became aware as well and began to stir restlessly.
"Why didn't they break down the door?" Li Xue asked, puzzled.
"They're heading somewhere else," the Captain replied, carefully listening to the sounds outside the door. "Regardless, it's a good thing they didn't force their way in!"
The Captain opened the window and waved a signal stick in his hand.
V44 quickly spotted them and adjusted its direction, aligning the rear door with the window as it slowly approached.
Due to its size, V44 couldn't get too close to the window; there was about a two-meter gap between the open hatch and the window. However, this posed no challenge for the Presidential Guard and the special forces inside the cabin.
In less than half a minute, a makeshift 'bridge' made of clothing and bulletproof vests appeared before the Vice President.
The Vice President looked at the windowsill for a moment before finally starting to climb up, only to be suddenly shoved aside by the Captain.
At that moment, the man from earlier lunged directly at the Captain. The Captain elbowed him away and quickly drew his pistol, aiming at the man—or rather, the Infected Person—and fired repeatedly until the magazine was empty, still pulling the trigger…
Once the Vice President and the guards were on board,
"You all go first; I'll be last," the Captain said, pushing Chen Rui toward the window. "Do you really need to hesitate at a time like this?"
Chen Rui grabbed the Captain's arm, staring into his eyes. He swiftly rolled up his sleeve, revealing two crescent-shaped wounds near his elbow that were still oozing blood…
