Chen Rui tried to suppress his excitement. He didn't know why, but whenever he encountered military matters like this, he would become particularly thrilled. It was a unique passion of boys, but it felt a bit off; after all, he was nearing thirty. There wasn't much youthful fervor left in him—he was more of a military enthusiast.
The room where Chen Rui was located was only a dozen meters away from the entrance. He could clearly hear the sound of someone coming down the stairs as the door opened. It was hard to tell if it was intentional or accidental, but the soundproofing in all the rooms was quite poor. Even the lightest footsteps he took could be heard as his shoes lightly scraped against the floor.
The third person confirmed they were coming down, presumably heading to the middle level.
The fourth person confirmed they were coming down, also presumably heading to the middle level.
The fifth person confirmed they were coming down, and their footsteps echoed for a longer duration, likely heading to the lower level.
The sixth person did not come down!
Chen Rui didn’t hear any movement from the stairs. The staircase was very rudimentary, covered with metal sheeting on a simple frame, making it impossible to descend silently. This meant that this person likely had intentions similar to his own.
Thinking this, Chen Rui unconsciously tightened his grip on the rifle in his hands. Although he had no intention of using it, doing so at this moment helped bolster his confidence.
“Bang.” The door was pushed open again; it wasn’t just any door but the distinctive sound of the entrance door. The seventh person had entered, but the sixth person still hadn’t gone into any room. Logically, these two should have crossed paths quickly, with one of them exiting soon after. However, Chen Rui didn’t hear any further sounds—no sounds of close combat or gunfire.
Soon after, there was movement on the stairs again—a very light footstep sound faintly echoed. The frequency of descent was quite high; if one didn’t listen closely, they might miss it.
Wait! This was the sound of two sets of footsteps. Chen Rui immediately realized why the footsteps were both light and quick; on such a staircase, moving faster would only create more noise.
Such a high frequency while maintaining such low noise could only mean that two people were descending together.
“Damn it.” Chen Rui muttered under his breath. If no one had teamed up, then he would likely face only one enemy at the end, making it very possible to take them by surprise. But if two were together, that probability dropped significantly.
The worst part was that their joint action would greatly increase their chances of survival. Trying to eliminate them using another's hand would be nearly impossible. In such ambush situations, when levels are equal, having superior numbers provides a significant advantage because at least one of them would be able to react no matter from which direction they encountered an enemy; thus, ambushing became nearly impossible.
“Bang.” The entrance door opened once more; this should be the last person—the last one was Li Xue!
Li Xue stepped inside. The upper level was completely silent. Although the soundproofing here wasn’t great, the wall and door at the entrance provided exceptional sound insulation; it was impossible to hear anything happening inside from outside.
The entire upper space wasn’t large—just over two hundred square meters—and after accounting for stairs and corridors, there were only a few rooms left.
Li Xue walked lightly in front of these two rows of rooms. Although this space wasn’t suitable for an ambush battle, it was perfect for a surprise attack.
In both the middle and lower levels' rooms, each room had at least two doors and up to four doors; their safety levels were far inferior to those in this upper area. In contrast, each room upstairs had at most two doors, with one triangular room in the corner being the only one with just a single door.
Li Xue slowly pushed open the door to the first room. Unsure if there were enemies lurking inside, she preferred to enter cautiously to avoid revealing her position too soon.
It was empty. She let out a sigh of relief and continued to the next room.
Breathing heavily, Li Xue stood before the triangular room, the sporadic gunfire and crashing sounds from downstairs signaling that someone had been eliminated. Her energy was being drained as she searched for nonexistent enemies.
When one is highly focused, physical strength and stamina deplete quickly. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Li Xue had already made up her mind: if this room was empty, she would rest inside until she regained her composure before venturing out again.
Gripping her rifle tightly, Li Xue quickly opened the door and rushed in, colliding directly with a solid chest.
“Ouch.” Chen Rui had anticipated this encounter after seeing Li Xue wandering around the First Floor. He realized that trying to take down the previous couple alone might not be feasible, so forming an alliance with Li Xue was essential.
Having made his calculations, Chen Rui stood at the doorway. Given that Li Xue had been moving slowly, it was clear she was on high alert. In such a tense situation, any hiding could be misinterpreted as a threat, and she might shoot him before recognizing who he was. That’s why he confidently stood at the entrance, believing that Li Xue wouldn’t fire upon seeing him. However, she didn’t notice him at all.
Despite wearing a bulletproof vest, the force of the impact combined with the point of collision left Chen Rui’s chest aching. Fortunately, Li Xue’s finger wasn’t on the trigger; otherwise, that sudden crash would have surely knocked him out.
“What are you doing?” Li Xue complained as she staggered back to her feet, looking at Chen Rui while subtly disengaging the safety on her rifle.
Chen Rui chuckled. “You’re the one who threw yourself at me. Now you’re asking what I’m doing? I haven’t even asked you what you’re up to.”
Li Xue’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment; it was true that she had crashed into Chen Rui with such force that they both ended up on the floor, with her sprawled over him—definitely resembling an embrace.
“Hmph! It’s a mercy I didn’t shoot you on the spot; how ungrateful can you be?” Li Xue pulled Chen Rui up and shot him a glare.
Noticing that Li Xue’s rifle safety was still off, Chen Rui smiled. “You think you can take me out without even having your safety on? I think you’re just reluctant.”
His words made Li Xue feel both flustered and irritated, leaving her unable to retort.
“Hmph! By the time I’m willing to do that, you won’t be laughing anymore,” Li Xue huffed and turned away from Chen Rui, gently closing the door behind her.
Seeing her expression darken, Chen Rui realized he might have gone too far and quickly tried to soothe her. “Look at me; I wouldn’t want to be shot either. Otherwise, why would I just stand here waiting for you?”
Unexpectedly, this time Li Xue seemed immune to Chen Rui’s charm. Her expression remained unchanged as she coldly replied, “I see you’re afraid of Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan’s duo team. You’re only standing out in plain sight because you want me on your team to distract Duo Zhou Group.”
Being called out for his intentions was quite embarrassing for Chen Rui. He chuckled awkwardly, unsure of what to say next. The two fell into silence as the room felt eerily quiet.
Suddenly, something caught Chen Rui's eye—a glimmer that wasn’t very bright. Following it, he realized it was the diamond ring on Li Xue's left hand's middle finger—the very one he had placed there himself just yesterday.
Thinking of this, Chen Rui felt bolder, as he could basically confirm that Li Xue was merely sulking or trying to observe his reaction, rather than genuinely being angry with him.
With a smile, Chen Rui playfully pouted at Li Li, "Don't be mad anymore. I was wrong, okay? That... the Duo Zhou Group is indeed tough to deal with. Can you help me out?"
Li Xue's lips twitched slightly, clearly amused by the sight before her, but she quickly composed herself and shot a glance at Chen Rui. "Oh? The legendary sharpshooter Chen Rui also needs someone to cover him? Aren't you embarrassed to go out like this?"
After revealing Li Xue's expression, he pressed on, "Oh come on, who am I compared to our Sheryl? She's beautiful and talented, like a fairy. How could I ever reach your level?"
Li Xue no longer tried to hide her amusement; the corners of her mouth lifted slightly as she tapped his forehead with her finger and laughed, "With just some sweet talk, how could you ever match up to me? Why didn't you realize this yesterday? This fairy has already fallen into the mortal realm and got entangled with an unknown soldier like you. And now... we can't separate anymore."
Hearing Li Xue's implied agreement made Chen Rui's heart leap with joy. Although Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan were quite skilled, he and Li Xue made a far superior team. All they needed to do now was wait patiently for the others to be eliminated one by one, and then the well-prepared Chen Rui Group would ambush the exhausted Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan.
The plan was beautiful, but plans never survive contact with reality; ultimately, luck would be the deciding factor. A significant part of their success depended on fortune. If Chen Rui and Li Xue were ambushed by Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan right after they descended the stairs, it would truly be bad luck, and being eliminated would be unavoidable.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The intense gunfire echoed from below once more. Chen Rui exchanged glances with Li Xue, both nodding in agreement as they checked their weapons in preparation for action.
This was the fourth round of gunfire. If nothing unexpected happened, only two people would remain downstairs—most likely Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan, who had just been through fierce battles. Now would be the best time to go down.
Chen Rui and Li Xue slowly approached the staircase, with Chen Rui gesturing for her to let him go first. Li Xue nodded and aimed down from the platform to provide cover for him. It was their first time cooperating, yet their synergy was almost on par with any seasoned ARGAE player team, even carrying a hint of special forces flair.
As they descended to the mid-level, aside from their own breathing, there were no other sounds. Chen Rui made a downward gesture, and they began moving toward the lower level...
