Chen Rui did not directly mention Chen Zijing, even though he knew that the person in front of him likely had some insider information. However, that did not mean she would unconditionally share it with him; no one would be foolish enough to do that.
"It's just some family matters. Who cares about the affairs of ordinary folks like us? Unlike Sister Bai, who has the paparazzi chasing her for every little thing," Chen Rui cleverly sidestepped the topic, passing the ball back to Bai Qingyu.
Chen Rui believed that a smart woman like Bai Qingyu must have noticed something unusual about Li Li, but he was unsure how much she actually knew. His intention was to draw out Bai Qingyu's words.
"You really are clever. Well, it doesn't matter; it's not like I made a mistake. Even if you are his spy, it doesn't bother me," Bai Qingyu remarked, recognizing the trap Chen Rui had set but choosing not to ignore or evade it. Instead, she directly opened up the topic.
Chen Rui's trick was once again exposed. He smiled awkwardly and pretended not to understand. "What about Sister Bai? Why can't I comprehend?"
Bai Qingyu shot him a glance, clearly displeased with his act of confusion. "We're all smart people here; let's speak plainly. I know that Li Li's feelings for me are no longer exclusive, but how much I know is something I can't easily share with you. You’ll have to trade some secrets for it."
Bai Qingyu was as cunning as a fox, not allowing Chen Rui to gain any advantage. Seeing that he had no response, she chuckled lightly and took another sip from her cup.
Noticing that Bai Qingyu's interest was waning, Chen Rui quickly smiled and said, "As for me, I don't really have any secrets. But there is one thing that nobody knows—I'll tell you now to show my sincerity."
Bai Qingyu noncommittally hummed in response and set her cup down again, waiting for Chen Rui's astonishing secret.
"When I sleep, I can only fall asleep quickly while listening to intense music," Chen Rui said mysteriously, covering his mouth with his hand as he revealed this secret to Bai Qingyu.
Bai Qingyu coughed twice in surprise; Chen Rui's revelation caught her off guard. After hearing it, she felt both amused and exasperated, leaving her momentarily speechless.
"Hmph! With your attitude, we might as well stop chatting," Bai Qingyu pretended to be angry and subtly made a move to stand up.
Chen Rui panicked and immediately explained, "I’m being completely sincere! This is something nobody else knows; right now it's just between you and me. Think about it—most people listen to soft melodies when they sleep. Who else listens to intense music like I do?"
Chen Rui's shamelessness made Bai Qingyu unable to hold back her laughter. Since she couldn't contain herself anymore, she decided not to keep pretending.
Covering her mouth with a smile, her eyes sparkled with mischief. "Since that's the case, I might as well tell you those things too. Holding them in is uncomfortable anyway; it's better to let them out. But you must promise not to blab about it!"
Chen Rui noticed Bai Qingyu's lips twitch slightly, and he felt a surge of joy inside. "We have been open with each other; how could we betray that?"
Bai Qingyu sighed softly and murmured, "Ever since he revealed his identity and confessed his feelings for me, I suspected this would happen. Even though he was so sincere at the time, I knew that these things would come to pass eventually, after all, he is Li Li."
Chen Rui listened intently to Bai Qingyu's words while observing her facial expressions, trying to discern which statements were true and which were false.
"He was known for being quite the romantic in high school, but he toned it down a bit in college. Still, for someone like him, a wealthy young master, women are never in short supply, so I didn't mind back then." Bai Qingyu's eyelashes fluttered slightly, as if she were engaged in a significant internal struggle.
"When he was about to graduate, I was running for student council president. He was the previous president and got to know me through that. Due to his commitments, he rarely dealt with student council matters on campus, so I helped him with some issues."
As Bai Qingyu continued recounting their acquaintance, Chen Rui felt a twinge of impatience; this wasn't what he wanted to hear. However, he was surprised to learn that Bai Qingyu and Li Li were actually high school alumni. These events likely unfolded after Li Li took charge of Huayu Group.
"After graduation, I followed my dreams and joined Huayu Entertainment. Everything went unusually smoothly; I suspected there was someone powerful behind the scenes helping me. So when he confessed his feelings for me, I wasn't shocked at all; instead, I felt a bit uncomfortable."
Uncomfortable? Why?
"Because his reputation for being a flirt was common knowledge throughout the company. Even if he swore eternal love at that moment, it would be hard for me to agree openly in front of everyone, even though I still loved him."
Chen Rui suddenly realized that Bai Qingyu had not accepted Li Li's confession to this day; thus, they were not in any sort of romantic relationship. Despite their long acquaintance, even if Li Li had a new partner now, it didn't mean he had done anything wrong.
"Then..." Chen Rui hesitated to speak. Bai Qingyu saw the thoughts swirling in his mind and smiled. "So I did not accept his confession; I am waiting."
"Waiting?" Chen Rui asked in confusion. Waiting for what?
"Yes, I'm waiting for him to tire of his games and decide he wants to marry. If he still loves me then, my waiting will have been worthwhile."
Chen Rui was somewhat astonished. To wait with one's best years for someone who may not love you back required immense courage and genuine affection!
"And even if he no longer loves me, I won't cling to him. After all, it was I who rejected him in the first place, and I still love him."
Bai Qingyu's eyes sparkled with tears, and even Chen Rui could not question her words at that moment, despite her being an actress.
Silence hung in the air. After hearing so much, Chen Rui realized he hadn’t learned much of what he wanted to know, and Bai Qingyu had thrown him into disarray. Meanwhile, Bai Qingyu was adjusting her emotions and offered no further explanations.
"Well, now it's your turn, right?" Bai Qingyu said with a gentle smile, completely unlike the person who was about to cry just moments ago; she had transformed back into that cunning fox.
"My situation is a bit complicated. If you hear it, you might get into trouble too," Chen Rui lamented inwardly, feeling as though he had failed to achieve his goal and had instead been outmaneuvered.
"Not at all. We are open with each other; how could we let each other down?" Bai Qingyu countered with Chen Rui's own words, leaving him speechless.
"Actually, it's not a big deal. I just want to investigate this Chen Zijing, Li Xue's ex-boyfriend. You must have seen him," Chen Rui said, deciding to dive straight into the topic since there was no room for reversal.
"Oh! You don't know this person?" Bai Qingyu was somewhat surprised. She had assumed that Chen Rui must be someone close to Chen Zijing since they were so similar in appearance, speech, and cunning.
Chen Rui shook his head helplessly. "Before I met them, I had no idea who Chen Zijing was. It was only after getting to know them that I learned about him; he looks quite a bit like me."
"Not just a bit; it's as if they were cast from the same mold. Even twins aren't as similar as you two," Bai Qingyu pointed out seriously.
"What I want to know is what important role Chen Zijing played among their group that warranted such treatment from them, and what led to his death. As for Li Xue, she personally killed Chen Zijing."
Bai Qingyu covered her mouth and laughed. "Why has it turned into you asking questions now? You're quite the clever one. In their group, Chen Zijing served as the brain of the operation, while Li Li acted like the heart—one being the spiritual leader of the team and the other being the think tank and decision-maker."
"Decision-maker?" Chen Rui genuinely hadn’t expected that Chen Zijing had reached such a position or that others would trust him enough to hand over their enterprises.
"It’s because of Li Xue; I don’t know the specifics. Anyway, Chen Zijing's words dictated their actions and held significant power. His death was entirely an accident or perhaps a result of higher-level maneuvers. The victory in the Five O'Clock War came at the cost of Chen Rui's life. From what I understand, before declaring war, military high-ups had already begun their operations. Chen Rui was ordered to pilot a transport aircraft filled with six squad members to that country. After dropping everyone off, he realized he had been detected by enemy radar once. To avoid exposure, he and the co-pilot decisively crashed the plane into the sea to evade detection, leading the enemy to mistakenly believe it was a probe from our side and successfully covering for the six squad members. Of course, this is what I know; as for the inside story, I have no idea."
Bai Qingyu's words left Chen Rui astonished. If detected over the sea, one could simply lower their altitude to avoid radar detection. However, resolving the issue by crashing into the ocean, while it indeed evaded the enemy's sight, also meant sacrificing one's life.
If he were Chen Zijing, he would never have done such a thing. No, something was off; there had to be some detail that was wrong!
