As autumn approached, the sycamore trees by the roadside began to shed their leaves, some red and others orange.
A young man dressed in a khaki trench coat had become Chen Rui's target. However, due to the target's strong counter-surveillance skills, Chen Rui had to change his outfit during this time. Now, he was left with only a shirt and a pair of jeans.
"Is it still not time yet? They really take their sweet time!" Chen Rui complained as he rubbed his hands together.
Fortunately, the Trench Coat Man did not pay much attention to what was behind him, so he didn’t take any detours and directly entered a residential building.
Chen Rui followed slowly behind, watching as the man took the elevator before quickly dashing up the stairs.
"Damn it, who came up with this plan? Forcing me to actively seek them out! Shouldn't they be contacting me according to their rank?" Chen Rui grumbled as he climbed to the first floor to check on the elevator. Luckily, this elevator was quite old and moved slowly; otherwise, it would have driven him insane.
He had already lost track of five people. Their counter-surveillance skills were no joke; often, just as Chen Rui regained his focus, he would realize he had lost them again. If he lost this one too, he would have no choice but to ask Yu Mingming for their location. However, for the sake of realism, Chen Rui was extremely reluctant to do so. But if it came down to it, there would be no other option.
The elevator stopped at the eighth floor. Chen Rui leaned against the wall of the stairwell and perked up his ears to listen for any sounds in the corridor.
The old iron door creaked open with a rusty sound due to years of neglect and partial deformation.
Chen Rui opened his phone's camera mode and quietly extended it through the gap between the stairwell and the corridor door.
"Bang." The sound of the iron door closing and locking followed immediately. Chen Rui pulled back his phone and played back the recorded video.
In the video, the door to Room 8 opened, and a slightly darker-skinned Asian man stepped out to glance at the Trench Coat Man. Then they both quickly slipped into Room 8.
"Finally caught you," Chen Rui said with a slight smile. A gust of wind blew in from the vent, making him feel a bit cold. He decided to head downstairs first to buy a jacket. "I'll deal with you later, you little brat!"
Chen Rui exited the apartment building and casually slipped into a clothing store nearby.
8. Indoor:
"Have you confirmed that no one is following you?" the slightly dark-skinned Asian man asked.
The Trench Coat Man took off his hat and smiled, "Don't worry, we are so secretive in our operations that it's not easy to be tracked down. Besides, we haven't declared war yet; otherwise, how could we come here so easily? Right, Tiger?"
Tiger shook his head, feeling helpless against the Trench Coat Man. However, he had a point; if they were exposed at this stage, it wouldn't be due to their own mistakes but rather because of an insider.
"That said, White Wolf, don't be so careless. What if we really are being watched? It would be detrimental to our future actions." A tall, slender youth appeared in the living room, interrupting their conversation. He had the demeanor of a superior reprimanding a subordinate, but he looked much younger than both White Wolf and Tiger.
White Wolf smiled at the tall youth, "Alright, alright, Elephant General has a point. I will be more cautious. Where are Lion Brother, Big Dog, and Fox?"
"Missing us already?" Three people emerged from another room, one of whom was the most handsome man among them.
"Fox, your mother really gave birth to you in the wrong body; otherwise, you could have become a real vixen," one person next to Fox said, causing everyone to burst into laughter. Fox raised his hand to hit him but was stopped by another person. "Alright, alright, since everyone is here, can we get down to business?"
"Big Dog! You're always so serious. Come on, this mission isn't just any mission; we're unlikely to return from this one. Why are you still so motivated?" Fox looked at Big Dog with a helpless expression.
Everyone fell silent for a moment as the atmosphere turned awkward. This was a truth no one wanted to face: this mission was not a typical counter-terrorism operation or border drug bust; it was a genuine infiltration behind enemy lines. Their chances of survival were slim, and regardless of success or failure, they would not be able to return home. However, their greatest value lay in this very fact—serving their country and winning a crucial battle!
The six of them—Fox, Lion Brother, Big Dog, Tiger, White Wolf, and Elephant General—were part of an elite special forces unit trained at great expense by their country. Their primary value was to respond swiftly and eliminate threats when the safety of the nation and its people was at risk.
Although war had not yet begun, they were already embedded within enemy territory and ready to strike at any moment.
"To be honest, the specific mission has not yet been assigned, so there's no need to overthink it. Let's wait until the Liaison Officer arrives before making any decisions. This operation will not involve any direct communication with superiors; all contact will be handled by the Liaison Officer. I am in charge of operations while Dog is in charge of combat. Understood?" Elephant General stated seriously. His stern demeanor belied his youthful appearance; he was certainly older than he looked.
The operational codenames for the six were actually Elephant, Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Dog, and Fox. For convenience in communication and to obscure information from enemy intelligence agencies if decrypted incorrectly, they used names like Elephant General, Lion Brother, Tiger, White Wolf, Big Dog, and Fox.
"Doesn't that Liaison Officer hold our lives in his hands?" the Fox said, a hint of worry in his voice. If he were to entrust his back to the five people before him, he wouldn't even furrow his brow. But now, to directly hand over the fate of the entire team to a stranger was something he found quite unsettling.
The Big Dog interrupted his concerns. "This Liaison Officer has been deep behind enemy lines for over a decade, even his family doesn't know. Despite that, he remains steadfast in his position. What right do we have to question whether he would betray us?"
Having been away from home for more than ten years, solely for the sake of their country’s victories—what kind of patriotism or hatred must one possess to endure such a life?
For someone like him, it was indeed hard to believe he would turn against them. After all, he had already made so many contributions to the nation; there was no reason for him to betray it.
"Moreover," the Elephant General nodded, "our specific mission is also assigned by this Liaison Officer. In fact, his rank is higher than ours." He then dropped another bombshell that shocked everyone in the room.
If their mission was given by this Liaison Officer, it essentially indicated one thing: the country trusted him more than they trusted them. This was also why the Elephant General considered the Liaison Officer's status superior to theirs.
"What about the code name and contact method for this Liaison Officer?" Tiger asked. He was the only one among them with a legitimate identity. It wasn't that the others lacked identities; it was just that Tiger's identity was seamless. Even if brought to Ia, no discrepancies would be found. The others had hastily prepared their identities, which could only withstand ordinary scrutiny. If taken to the police station, their issues would be immediately exposed.
Thus, only Tiger could operate openly while the others could only carry out actions discreetly.
At this point, even the Elephant General frowned slightly. "Above us, the Liaison Officer will come find us himself and instruct us to wait patiently without making any rash moves to avoid exposing our identities."
Everyone's expressions changed at this statement. Wasn't that placing too much faith in that Liaison Officer? Not to mention that their current residence had been randomly chosen; even if the Liaison Officer knew their exact location, how could they guarantee that his counter-surveillance skills were better than theirs?
Just then, there was a knock at the door—"Knock knock knock."
The Fox raised an eyebrow and lightly remarked, "Why ring the doorbell when you can just knock?"
Tiger laughed as he ushered them into the room and quickly tidied up any traces left behind before loudly complaining, "Who is it? It's so early! Can't anyone let people sleep?"
There was silence outside. Tiger approached the door and peered through the peephole: a man in his thirties wearing a black trench coat stood there. He pulled out a black wallet, opened it, and held it up to the peephole.
It was an identification document, beneath which were the personal details and unit information of the Trench Coat Man, while above it was an emblem.
The emblem was circular in shape, divided into two concentric circles. Between the rings were the words "depaRen F JusIe" and "FedeRaL BRueau F InVesIgaIn," which stood for "Department of Justice" and "Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Inside the inner ring was a single golden star evenly distributed and encircled, while the outer ring radiated golden rays. At the center of the emblem was a shield design, flanked by green laurel leaves. Below the shield was a flowing ribbon.
FBI!!! Tiger's heart raced, but he knew that in times like this, he couldn't afford to panic. Although he didn't know why the FBI had come, he decided to open the door to avoid raising further suspicion.
"What brings the Federal Bureau of Investigation to my door?" Tiger said nonchalantly, showing no signs of tension.
Tiger understood that in America, despite the FBI's formidable reputation, ordinary citizens had no reason to fear them; after all, they didn't have the resources to investigate every average person.
"This is a search warrant. I am the head of security for this precinct, so we will be conducting a routine search."
The Trench Coat Man presented a white paper printed with several lines of text in English. At the bottom was a signature and a large official seal.
Confirming it was a routine search, Tiger felt he could not obstruct them any longer. After all, if they didn’t thoroughly search this room, it would be difficult to find the other five people.
Tiger followed him into each room, finding nothing unusual. Upon returning to the living room, the FBI agent stroked his chin and remarked helplessly, "Just now when I knocked on your door, you complained that I disturbed your sleep, but none of the beds in these rooms look like they’ve been slept in recently."
Tiger's heart sank; this was indeed a blunder. However, he immediately questioned why a head of security from a precinct would personally come to conduct a search here.
